A-League Expansion

Is a pretty dodgy look from twg, but at least it shows which bid is which from WS, which gets confusing at times in the media

Glory Boys will have a face lift for their stadium.

THE State Government has committed to rebuild Members Equity Stadium as a rectangular dedicated rugby-soccer venue in a staged $160 million revamp.

But work will not start for at least another year while detailed plans are drawn up and negotiations are held with the Town of Vincent over the level of control the government will have.

The first step in the project that will take at least two years to complete will be to demolish the scaffold stand on the eastern side of the ground and replace it with a new state-of-the-art facility.

Change rooms and player facilities will be built into the new eastern stand with a large drive through undercroft for team buses.

The second stage will be to replace the current grandstand with the goal ends linked under one roof in the final stage.

Most of the construction work will take place out of the Super 14 season.

The government has based its plan on Skilled Park on the Gold Coast that opened in March last year and holds 27,400 spectators, has 100 open corporate boxes, 25 closed corporate suites and two 450 seat function rooms.

Short-term $2m facelift

Meanwhile the stadium will get a more immediate $2 million facelift as the home of the Western Force.

The Force will play its Super 14 games at MES from next season after leaving Subiaco Oval where crowds have fallen drastically because of appalling viewing conditions.

The club secured the $2 million, interest free loan from the State Government this week for upgraded lighting, more corporate facilities and extra general seating.

It will lift stadium capacity from 18,156 to more than 20,500. Force membership, including corporates and season ticket holders was 17,000 last season.

Upgraded lighting, particularly in the north west and south west corners on the grandstand side, is expected to cost between $300,000-$800,000.

The lighting is needed for the ``super slo-mo'' cameras used by video referees adjudicating on contentious tries.

It is not yet known what is needed but work will start next month when S14 broadcaster Fox Sports is in Perth for the Wallabies Test against South Africa at Subiaco Oval.

The stadium currently has 12 large suites catering for 240 people and seats another 240 in small open boxes.

The Force will build temporary suites at the northern end, either side of ``The Shed'' to cater for a further 180 corporate patrons.

A corporate marquee for match day functions will hold another 500 who will have seats in the eastern stand.

The final part of the make-over will be an extra 900 seats in the south east and north west corners.
The main grandstand will hold only corporate members and ``The Shed'' will remain a standing only terrace stand.

The Force has said in the past that it believes the State Government should honour a $25 million pledge to help upgrade the stadium.

The former Labor government promised the money when the Perth bid for the Super 14 side was being prepared.

A $30,000 upgrade of some player facilities was carried out by the Town of Vincent for the Glory games with Wolverhampton Wanderers and Fulham.

The council estimates the stadium could be upgraded for $60-$70 million.

who else dislikes the latter 2 western sydney team names immensely?

whilst id love to see tasmania in, they have a long way to go with facilities, etc.

I thought Greater Sydney FC was ok. They need to distinguish themselves and not sound lesser - and also probably don't want to limit themselves by calling themselves specifically what they are. Western Sydney FC.

"Premier state" is atrocious, but the bid has buckleys in any case. Neil's bid is bound to eclipse the opposition I think.

i would love to see wollongong and a geelong or other team outside the capitals happen,
make it more defined by a region, it has so far worked in NSW ( sydney CCM Jets)
and looks like itll work in QLD, obvious rivalry to form would be melbournes south west cousin

tassie, is a looooong shot

There is no bid from geelong. It is li8ke saying I would like a darwin team. If they dont have the fans/money there is no point.

Biggest rivalries would be in same city. If W.syd comes in, there is no doubt their rivalry will be bigger with bling than with us.

I'd love to see the W.Syd team get the 12th place but Canberra take over Wellington's license if that is possible. That way the league has Australia teams only since it is called the A-League.

Massive News ... maybe New Football told Old Soccer the rules and they would not be broken .....

Canberra handed inside running as Meissner pulls out of FFA race for new team

CANBERRA has suddenly moved into pole position to become the A-League's 12th team after western Sydney's leading bid yesterday withdrew from the race.

Colourful businessman Joe Meissner notified Football Federation Australia that he would no longer be continuing his submission for ''personal reasons'' - leaving the FFA scrambling to find an alternative for a second team in Sydney.

FFA chief executive Ben Buckley declined to confirm Canberra's bid - which has government support - was now the frontrunner, although he admitted there were ''time pressures'' to find a viable team from western Sydney for 2010.

With a second Melbourne side already confirmed, there is a growing chance of an 11-team league next season.

Meissner's bid was believed to have won the support of the FFA board 10 days ago, pending the submission of a final list of financial guarantees. But before those guarantees were provided, Meissner, who was unavailable for comment last night, withdrew his bid.

Bid chairman Ian Rowden, a former board member of Sydney FC, said: ''We're all disappointed it's come to this. A lot of hard work had gone into the planning and we believe we were poised to create a strong and viable team, which would have been competitive on the field and would have helped grow the game off the field. That opportunity still exists and I'm sure there will be a second Sydney team at some stage in the future.''

The western Sydney bid's chief executive, Berti Mariani, who says the group had the necessary backing, said: ''Some things in life you can't predict and obviously we're all coming to terms with what's occurred.''

Buckley, however, said that far from being a setback, the withdrawal of the Meissner bid proved the FFA was right to insist on stringent criteria being met before any licence was issued.

''Naturally we're disappointed a consortium has pulled out, but it was never our only option,'' Buckley said.

''As we went through due diligence, this consortium wasn't able to meet the financial criteria. To me that reinforces how important it is we plan for expansion in a prudent way. The FFA needs to make sure successful bidders have the finance in place to operate a club. We make no apologies for being tough on that. What we won't do is issue a licence unless a bid meets the criteria. We can't afford to take unnecessary risks.''

Asked whether the Meissner bid had been the frontrunner, Buckley replied: ''I'm not prepared to say that.

''What I can say is they were well advanced and we commend them for the time and energy they put into the bid.''

The withdrawal of the bid opens the door for a rival western Sydney bid promoted, but not financed, by Socceroos skipper Lucas Neill to get a reprieve, although at this point it lacks the necessary financial support.

Buckley said having a new team in western Sydney for next year had not been ruled out.

''We haven't given up, in fact, I've been in active discussions with other consortia this afternoon,'' he said.

''There is some time pressure as far as season six goes - I concede that. But we've seen in the past what Gold Coast, North Queensland and Wellington have been able to achieve in a sort space of time, so anything is possible.''

Asked whether the FFA was keeping a close eye on the AFL's planning for a western Sydney side, Buckley added: ''This is not a race, our timetable is not dictated by other sports. We have to do what's right for the A-League and for football.''

Canberra remains the only bid that has met all the requirements and, with the national capital to host its first A-League match tomorrow night - when Central Coast Mariners play a ''home'' game against the Perth Glory - the timing is tempting for the FFA to make an announcement.

Pressed on whether Canberra now had pole position, Buckley responded: ''By definition when the numbers are reduced - those still left have a better chance. Canberra is a strong bid, but other bids are well advanced also.''

The Socceroos have reached an all-time high of No.14 in the world in the latest FIFA rankings released on Wednesday.

Australia is up two spots, despite only playing an international friendly against Ireland, which the Socceroos won 3-0, in almost three months.

Australia heads teams such as Denmark (16th) and Portugal (17th). Brazil is still the No.1 rated team ahead of Spain and the Netherlands.

The unwritten words  read to me New Football has rules and special rules for Old Soccer... Also maybe SFC had a chat to JM and said pull out and we will back your bid next time ...

To delay a WS bid with media deals and the WC bid coming up ... big big story ... and I have no doubt a WS team well run would change the face of sport in Australia ...

Would mean in 2011 teams 13 & 14...as well I think ....

HMMMMMmmmmmmmm......... the plot thickens...

I very much hope that Canberra gets a gig. They seem to have everything sorted, they've already got a W-League team, the AIS can essentially form their NYL team, they've got government backing (much like we do, but better).

While I'm pissed off that we're playing games down there, I'd love to go there for an *away* game. More HAL matches in driving distance FTW. Has the makings for massive, messy away trips. Trips down the Federal Highway, big nights out in the capital and stumbling back to a backpackers or a Formula 1 ahoy!

could the announcement have anything to do with the fact an A-league game is scheduled for Canberra this weekend....and the FFA may be aware of rumours of no one going ?  by suggesting Canberra may now have the inside running for the 12th licence, this may mean football locals decide to go to the game just to show support for a Canberra A-League team......
just my cynical view of the timing, that's all.......

yeah, but when did meissner and mariani *actually* pull out? the FFA's still been talking up west sydney until now, so maybe they really did only just bail out.

the only thing canberra don't have is a west sydney address...

If Canberra get an A-League team they should have 2 of their home games at Bluetongue to even things up.

FWIW, I reckon Canberra should replace Wellington (NZ) in the A-League and there should be a second Sydney team & second Melbourne team, all announced at the end of this season.

Wasn't comfortable with Meissner involved in that West Sydney bid, and I hope there's others who can put together a strong syndicate to take the bid to the FFA for that area.

And yes, Adz, that would balance the ledger. Cheeky!

Would you go and watch Canberra v Adelaide while we played Sydney up the road? Or GCU on the Gold Coast? Or the Scum in Scumsville?

Sorry Scottmac, not sure what your point is?

Are you saying, IF I WAS A CANBERRA supporter BASED IN CANBERRA, would I go to the listed matches you've quoted?
The answer, hypothetically, would probably be no. I'd stay at home and watch Canberra play @ home.

If they moved a Canberra game, to Bluetongue like Adz has suggested, then that falls right back to where we are tomorrow. And the answer would be: depends if I could travel.....and the circumstances behind the move.

Sorry if I misread what you posted.....

It would depend on if we were playing at the same time. If we were, then I'd either go to our game (Bling or Scumcastle) or watch the match on Fox. If we were playing at a different time then yes I would go to BT, and I wouldn't care who was playing against the Pollies.
