A second Melbourne team is expected to be announced soon

I don't know about this ... Mariners works even though we are only 80km away because we have a unique and clear identity. What will differentiate the new team from Victory ... ie. why would anyone support it?

It is a big city with alot of bandwagoners. I am sure the same bandwagoners will jump onto hearts when they are winning as do victory. Hell I am sure that is the reason so many ALF games are played at dome/mcg.

All they need is to get a small starting base of like 10k just like every other team and they will grow. And the bonus media attention will be good for victory too. I presume most weekends there will be 1 match in melbourne, rather than 2 or 0.

Also they intend to put most of their work into the SE i believe and be based there.

Jesus, Melbourne and Victoria in general have a completely different supporter culture compared to Sydney's "if we're winning we will go" bandwagon support (and im not referring to only football). They love it for the full season, they support their team as it is the thing to do in Melbourne. Im a Victorian and from my family, and having spent a fair amount of time down there, all I can say is that if you move to melb, you better find a team to support quicksmart before a local asks you. Its in their culture, their homes and in their workplaces. When my family moved to nsw, my dad couldnt believe the lack of "Over the watercooler" talk about the game on the weekend etc.
If you chuck on a table tennis world cup in Melb, they will pack it out.

Melbournites will find a way to affiliate themselves with Hearts just as Victory, hopefully not for ethnic reasons but more location or ethos.

There are a lot of people in Melb who cant stand the Victory and if the new side have any brains (and I'm sure they so) they will sign Viduka at any price.

Add a serb and a Greek into that mix and you will sell out every week

Kool is backing Lucas Neill's plans for  WS team.

With us having a relationship with the association of Neills childhood, it is a shame we could not get him onboard the mariners side, and especially the academy plans. Missed opportunity me thinks.

I think he already had plans for west sydney team before we got the cash for the academy.

But if he doesnt get the licence, will surely be something to look into

I have a shockingly bad memory, but wasn't there some talk in our very early days about Neill and Cahill having some sort of relationship with us?

Neill and Cahill caught up in secret club deal

SOCCEROOS Lucas Neill and Tim Cahill face an "arranged marriage" under a secret plan to merge rival A-League expansion teams and form a regional superclub.

The Sun-Herald can reveal Football Federation Australia is determined to launch a team in western Sydney and, while impressed with some financial aspects of the Wollongong-based South Coast Football Club's bid, sees the franchise as a non-starter because the region does not have a suitable stadium.

A group fronted by Neill is favoured by the FFA to launch a western Sydney team. Meanwhile, Cahill is associated with South Coast FC through plans to link the proposed club with youth academies endorsed by the Premier League star.

Although Wollongong's WIN Stadium does not meet A-League standards, and there are questions about the depth of its supporter base, sources say South Coast's ace is its link to a mystery cashed-up investor. The secret plan aims to unite Neill and Cahill behind a regional club backed with the investor's money, playing league matches at different locations across NSW.

The plan has been confirmed by four independent sources. However, no one associated with either bid, nor the FFA, will talk about the proposal publicly or admit to being the originator of the idea. South Coast officials expressed surprise at the proposal, even though one of its leading advisers questioned the viability of two new A-League teams in NSW in the current economic climate. "We do not know anything about this and therefore have no comment to make," a spokesman for South Coast's bid wrote in an email.

Question.

If there was no CCM would you support some nomadic club that played here every now and then?

I wouldn't.If this is true they're off their heads. It would never work long term imo.

Rugby league on the coast proves it can work.
Should it be done? No. The best results for crowds are to stay in one area. Not sure they would care about that for tv though.

But, the major whole? The problem with the gongs bid being the stadium, yet they want the merged team to play there too? Doesnt make sense. The govt would NEVER pay to fix the stadium and bring it up to capacity without a major tennat for more than 3 games a season. Only a solo gong side could do that.

I think w syd will come in, and just before the tv deal is struck, they may add tas/canberra/gong. Maybe all 3 depending on the afc/fifa decision on nix.

On that note, the next tv deal for Oz will dramatically reduce the importace of any NZ tv/media deals i would think.

Good point about NZA especially when most the sport in NZ is on pay TV and pay TV only has a 15% take up ... so putting the A-League FTA could be a worthwhile excise in terms of growth..

I still think that unless the West Sydney bid gets their act together soon Canberra will walk straight into the final franchise spot. They have the cash, support and stadium plus the pre-existing W-League side.

Are you aware of the massive player registrations and interest in the world game in western Sydney? We have so far ignored the biggest market in Australia. Ther should have been a team out west instead of the choppers for V1.
