To be honest I dislike these touchy feely New Age nicknames which imply shallowness and lack of susbtance. I'd rather we adopt the traditional naming, the Mariners nickname is far more meaningful than "Fury" for instance.

yeah, because rovers, wanderers and multiple uniteds are so much better  ::)  ::)

anyone who advocates the older traditional names has no idea about the sporting market in australia and this has been illustrated no better than the underperforming football markets of sydney and adelaide in terms of crowds

Sadly, Mick is right.

Whilst the name is cringeworthy, its just the way it is. They arent trying to appeal to traditionalists, they want a new audience.

Not to mention Mackay, Mt Isa and Rockhampton.

I think they are getting together for a couple of days next week to brain storm then spending the rest of the week drinking.  ;D

On a side note, Hoping we get to play a trial against them in Mackay to see how the locals up there feel about the team. I think the Fergie was a great choice as some of these areas have been exposed to both him and Lawrie this year.

Canberra's newest A-League supporter Millissa Fischer is expected to become a financial backer for Ivan Slavich's bid.
Last night more than 200 Aleague4Canberra foundation members and soccer fans gathered at the Deakin club to hear an update regarding Canberra's A-League bid and from its No1 ambassador Ned Zelic.

Zelic who grew up in Canberra before going on to an international career that included 40 Socceroos caps joined Slavich and former Canberra Cosmos chairman and current FFA disciplinary panel member Danny Moulis to speak about Canberra's bid for inclusion in the 2010-11 A-League.

Also in attendance was Frank Weimper adviser to new bid supporter Fischer, a Melbourne businesswoman who was previously involved in a North Queensland bid but was last week announced as a Canberra supporter.

While both sides were coy last night, they hinted Fischer would become a financial backer for Canberra's A-League bid like she had been for North Queensland.

''I can't say exactly, but I guess you can read into that [support in every which way], it's support in every way possible, so I think that's covering all bases,'' Slavich said when asked if Fischer would be a financial supporter.

Weimper said a discussion about financial backing had not happened yet, but it was likely it would.

''At this stage that is a negotiation that will happen down the track, I would presume at this stage that Millissa is just happy to support in any way she can,'' Weimper said.

He said Fischer was attracted to the bid by Slavich's business model and she would give valuable experience in dealing with the FFA.

According to media reports Fischer allegedly pulled out of the unsuccessful Townsville bid that lost to the North Queensland Fury because other stakeholders failed to come up with finances, but Weimper said it was because Fischer didn't feel there was anything further she could contribute.

Football Federation Australia chief executive Ben Buckley yesterday hinted that further expansion of the A-League was just around the corner.

In Townsville to rubber-stamp North Queensland's entry into the league as the 10th franchise in 2009-10, Buckley said the FFA had ambitious plans for the next two to three years, which included the Fury's inclusion next season.

Buckley sees the addition of the North Queensland Fury as a stepping stone towards a 12 and possibly 14-team competition with discussions under way with a number of consortia for entry into the 2010-11 competition. Buckley confirmed a number of A-League bids from NSW-based groups were under review.

''We have got and have received proposals from Canberra, from Wollongong, from the western part of Sydney and Tasmania as well,'' Buckley said.

''There is a lot of interest, there is a lot enthusiasm for additional A-League licences and we hope to take advantage of that over the next months.''

Fury sounds more like a Slamball team. :vomit:

How is it in keeping with the family-friendly / safe image the FFA is supposed to be so keen on?
Sounds a little aggressive IMO. :p ;)

Well I think this rejection of tradition is missing the point. It seems that the whole A-League is founded on the premise of doing everything differently from the rest of the world, even though the rest of the world follows a model that works perfectly.

Are we the only league in the world that has nearly all teams with awesome verbs and adjectives as part of club names?
Roar Victory Fury Glory

Not to mention mad mascots like Jets Phoenix

Adelaide and sydney are the only sane sides.. apart from ourselves who managed a half decent addition to 'Central Coast'

Every game that Furry lose will be a laughing stock.

So Japan doesn't use Antilers, red diamonds, marinos etc. as part of their names? and only uses wanderers, rovers, united and the like?

And if Sydney fc works so damn well why did they have a vote to adopt a nickname erlier this year?

lol name means shit all if the team delivers on the pitch. they could be called the Pink Pansies FC and if they were a majority winning team they would no doubt be very successful entity.
