I suspect he was given the FFA Cup to show an improvement over last season and after losing the first match it all became a pointless exercise.
In that match he shot himself in the foot by playing a second rate team with many out of position (see GG match thread).
Better to move now than 5 games into the season.
Nice guy who did very well at the lower levels but probably needs more experience before taking on coaching at the top level.
This should be a lesson that you cannot beat experience.
It really worries me that people are talking about Tony Vidmar a big gamble in terms of experience and even a bigger one for Rudan and Hutch, they all have to put in some more hard yards.
I would love a quality Spaniard.

They've spoken with Mulvey. He wanted to be able to spend 100% of the cap. Club said no, so he said no.
Was before TW was hired though

This has been my core problem with the #walmsleyout campaigns - noone's been able to come up with a viable, well-tested alternative. On the Facebook group, there's some people advocating heavily for a guy who's currently coaching for one of the CC club teams... Other than that yep, it's Rudan, Mulvey, Hutch or the return of Arnie - oh and now Vidmar.

  • Mulvey - PP has already pointed out the primary issue with him, he's rejected us before
  • Arnie - Let's be at least a LITTLE realistic here... He's not coming back, and even if he was, would we want him? And if we did, is there really much reason to expect him to perform any better than Walmsley, bearing in mind that he's not impressed particularly since we won the championship, and he's had a much bigger budget since?
  • Rudan has coached NPL for a couple of seasons, impressing in his first season but decidedly mediocre since apparently. Not to mention rumour has it that he can't stand us. Ultimately though, does NPL experience count for that much more than NYL experience?
  • Hutch - Club man and all, that's nice, but needs some experience.
  • Vidmar hasn't exactly impressed on a national level - the whole reason why people wanted him fired was non-performance, is that really where we want to go?
So now Walmsley's been let go and we're coachless - how's that better than before?

harry red knapp ?

Article linked by rbaker states that Harry is out as well as his wife would have some stern words to say about that... To my mind, anyone who's married to him would have to be made of stuff so stern that it's more likely that MC would reconcile with Arnie and Mossie and return the coaching setup to the championship setup ;)

Woooohoooo!

Strong swift move.

We got worse as the season went on and the way we played (not loosing) against GG was appalling for a professional side.

The commentators said they spoke to the Mariners and they are nervous. Shows they were taking it seriously and stuffed it up.

Timing is good. Gives new coach 8 weeks to work with the team instead of coming in mid season. TW was given his chance and showed no signs of knowing what he was doing.

2-1 against academy team (NPL 2 even worse than GG
Lost 2-0 to Aussie kids 18's or 20's can't remember - here on coast training
Lost 2-1 to GG played poorly
Just no tactical nowse or if he did, couldn't get his players to produce it

Mossy was poor and got chop and TW was worse

I'm going out on a limb here and saying it could well have been a joint decision made a while ago. TW's family is in England with a child with some considerable health needs. Being away from the family, particularly in that situation, being pilloried by media and fans alike, while having limited resources at your disposal would not have been an easy gig. His job this year may have been as simple as strengthening the areas where we needed to within the existing constraints.

Given that this year is the second of what MC said would be two tough years and that next year (with a decent TV deal) will be easier and the fact that only five of the twenty-four of the squad are contracted beyond this season you have to wonder whether the thought was already there to allow a new coach as much scope as possible to view the squad this year and model the squad next year to their own squad.

Wouldn't believe anything that Cockerill says about the Mariners. I've heard previous coaches talk to him and unless my ears are worse than I think they are his reports are diametrically the opposite of what was said.

Are people getting Tony and Aurelio Vidmar mixed up? Aurelio was the one fired, the one being speculated about is Tony.

After Moss and TW, we'd be crazy to stick another inexperienced coach into the top spot. We're the hardest gig in town, not the easiest. We need an experienced hand at the helm. Forget a marquee in January, spend it on a high quality coach. Of those mentioned Mulvey would be my top choice, but much prefer someone form OS with a strong CV.

Experienced coaches wont go where you cant even spend to the cap (Mulvey allegedly)

I cant see that a Tony Vidmar and possibly Sterj dream team would be worse

Yes, of the coaches mentioned above Hutch and Rudan couldn't possibly be in the running. They have less experience than TW and would be a disaster. Arnie is set at Sydney at least for a while and would only come back if his reputation has gone back a fair bit as we wouldn't have the cash. The only real options from the list above are Mulvey and Vidmar. If Mulvey wants a return to the A league then it could be a real temptation for him. For Tony V, is a great start for him. Whoever comes in has a great chance to boost their credentials, turn the worst side into a competitive one.
I was really hoping TW could turn things round, great guy and liked his honesty.....but we looked really short on confidence last week, nervous as one commentator mentioned. The belief really wasn't there, we need someone who can come in and quickly instill confidence into the team.

Viddy didn't produce with the Talent he had at a national level, wouldn't expect anything better at a clu level with Squad footballers.

He won the AFF tournament, what more do you want?

At the last world cup we were in a shocking group but made the R16 as a 3rd place team (lost to Germany, drew with eventual 4th place Mexico and beat Argentina) before losing to eventual champions Nigeria (who also beat USA, Chile, Brazil, Mexico...).

AFF tournament before that we lost the semi to Thailand, who we knocked off in the final this time.

I really don't see your point.
