And it's official. Walmsley is out.

The Central Coast Mariners wish to advise its Members, fans and the media that the club has parted company with Head Coach Tony Walmsley effective immediately.
Walmsley was appointed Head Coach of the Hyundai A-League outfit in April 2015.

John Hutchinson, Matthew Nash, Brice Johnson & Ben Cahn will continue the club’s pre-season preparations until a permanent Head Coach has been appointed before the start of the Hyundai A-League 2016/17 season.

The Central Coast Mariners will commence the recruitment process for its new Head Coach immediately and will advise its Members, fans and the media when a successful candidate has been assigned.

"It's time for me to move on to explore a number of opportunities,” Walmsley said. "I'm happy with my contribution to the club over a number of years.

"Last year was particularly tough and I sacrificed a lot, but I'm confident the work undertaken will bear fruit.

"I believe in the group of players I've assembled for this season and the new coach will be coming into a much healthier environment than the one I inherited,” Walmsley said.

Central Coast Mariners’ Executive Vice Chairman Peter Storrie thanked Walmsley for his commitment to the club and wished him the best in his future endeavours.

“On behalf of the Central Coast Mariners’ Board of Directors I would like to thank Tony Walmsley for the level of commitment, dedication and passion that he gave to this club,” Storrie said.

“Under Tony’s tutelage most recently as the club’s Head Coach and originally as Head of Youth Development, many young Australian players have been exposed to the Hyundai A-League.

“Tony has been crucial to the major steps forward this club has taken in regards to fan engagement that was made evident during his continuous availability to initiatives such as; Member functions, pre-game Skype calls and genuine interest in fan/media engagement.

“Tony's reign at the club was through a difficult period of restructuring of the team which he carried out with no complaints like a true professional and got on with the job. We wish him every success in the future,” Storrie said.

There's an interesting parallel to the sacking of Moss - he was sacked after we failed to qualify for the AFC CL group stage in 2014 (when we had a pretty decent sized sponsorship deal in the offing that would've made our Asian campaign revenue positive for the first time).

This time we had another new sponsor but failed to get on with our cup campaign.

Timing is definitely screwy though. Who knows how this affected our retention and recruitment plans for the coming season? With the performances last year, TW's card was surely marked, but I really think there should have been a steady transition - ease TW back into the TD role and then have a new head coach come through.

If you're going to have a snap transition, do it when the side breaks up for the off-season and use the off-season to recruit a replacement to then run all of pre-season.

Would be interested to find out the rationale though.....looks like Tony was to be given a chance this season, and then he is sacked without having the opportunity to have a go. Can't believe it's all on the back of the FFA cup as we aren't the only HAL side to lose and quite possibly will be more given it's played early pre-season.

Remember one fundamental rule of football (and life generally): things can always get worse.

Agree with the criticisms re timing, more ongoing instability.
Would anticipate at least 4 weeks to announce new coach then 4 weeks to apply new tactics/style/approach on the squad before the season starts.
4 weeks into the season would have been worse though.
Given the "world wide search'' last time, wonder if anybody is going to show interest in the job if it involves no new signings?

This is good news for the club, however the next step is potentially more important than this decision.

I was pretty happy to see the back of Moss, but it lead to Wamsley being appointed.

They need to understand how crucial this next decision is to team potential and results, but as importantly, fan moral. They have a real chance to get some goodwill here within the right appointment. Or they could promote Hutch as it's cheap and easy.

Get it right Mariners, this could be your last chance.

Arthur Papas has done a coaching apprenticeship and a half. Coached Melbourne Heart youth, Newcastle Youth won the NPLV's coach of the year, coached India U23s, Goa FC and lastly knocked us out with a semi professional side. After coming back from India he rescued the Oakleigh Cannon's season and lost in extra time to Hume City in the FFA Cup. If anyone can turn us around with a limited budget and timeframe I think it's him.
