Takeover bid for Melbourne Heart tabled

Support ... Heart fans will be hoping for a bright future (Getty)

Former National Soccer League giant South Melbourne has made a takeover offer for struggling A-League club Melbourne Heart, The World Game understands.

The Melbourne Heart board has called a meeting for Wednesday to consider the sale of the club in a deal believed to be in the region of $3.5 million.
Heart's stadium deal at AAMI Park has expired and under any new arrangement the club will have to attract a home crowd of 15,000 to break even, which is well above Hearts average home gate last season of 8,560.
Heart club directors will be asked to either recapitalise the club's finances to meet future shortfalls or consider the South Melbourne takeover offer.
Sources close to Heart have said the majority of directors are not willing to keep funding the shortfalls after both the Victorian Government and Football Federation Australia (FFA) knocked back their request for funding assistance.
South Melbourne, a four time NSL champion, has not hidden its A League ambition - and as recently as last month was involved in talks to bail out cash-strapped Central Coast Mariners.
Now a leading light in Victoria's Premier League, South plays at the redeveloped Lakeside Stadium with state of the art facilities, a healthy membership base and what’s considered the most advanced youth development structure in Victorian football.
Any South Melbourne offer would be subject to FFA approval.
Melbourne Heart offered no comment when contacted by The World Game while FFA has yet to respond to inquiries.

Have SBS finally given up shit stirring the Mariners?????? Next.............. Melbourne Heart????

To me Heart was another FFA debacle. There was no regional identity given to the club whatsoever. Merely a club created in a city that would surely support another team??

I think that it would be more successful situated in South Melbourne, being sustainable is another thing alltogether.

Victoria needs more than one team, however the FFA failed to realise that Melbourne is different from Sydney. In Sydney, while you have the CBD, the area is more spread out with population centres and mini CBD's in North Sydney, Chatswood, Bankstown and Parramatta. Melbourne has just the CBD and then sprawling suburbs. While WSW could differentiate themselves as the team for Sydneysiders from west of Strathfield, the Heart had no differentiation from a successful Victory side to endear themselves to supporters.

Geelong could work as it is another town, but South Melbourne could work as well for the historical ties for those who feel that the A League is too "plastic" and lacks tradition. I think a club with historical ties in Melbourne could be a big success.

Denied by Heart, apparently an unsolicited offer was made and rejected out of hand.

SBS failed with their Mariners takeover lies. Now this.

Staff not paid apparently. Thought Charlesworth was meant to be our saviour. Where are those Russians?

Could also be back office ineptitude with no CEO.

Reports are that it's a day late.

I'm guessing the back office is all over the place right now and most of them aren't worth feeding anyway.

Pay peanuts, get monkeys.

There are exceptions to that but not many.

If it's only on twitter, is there perhaps a chance that it's a fake report?
Ooooor that the bank stuffed up (if it's just a day)?
Ooooooor that someone else forgot to do the run?
Or something like that...

I know there are plenty of reasons to be nervous, historically, but it's probably worth getting the full story before we get too concerned :)

I haven't seen it yet, so for all I know, it could be from OzSportsinsider again ;)

FFC & Nebake

In most places wages are a click on a mouse so blaming Admin is kinda IMO grabbing at loose straws .... if they are late ...even a day given our history it is an issue...

Just wish Singo or someone like him would come along buy us... well someone with deep pockets and local knowledge would help... maybe we could suggest we get Hutch & Macca to go have a word to the young Mr Waterhouse for Singo and in return he and his mate Gerry could buy a holding stake in us...

Reminds me of the old Everly Brothers song ... All I have to do is Dream... youtube if you want ...
