under the present salary cap there is no incentive to extensively scout youth players

sydney used a heap of young players last season and went crap - they bolstered their team this season leaving players like jurman and danning on the bench and have gone much better

even brisbane are bearing the fruit of having a more experienced team with players like nichols and oar warming the bench

by the time these players are regular first team players they are off overseas anyway

Whats this BS about struggling ... we have a squad on paper as good as any .... and in Wee mac & Travis .. especially Wee mac we have an awesome team... we have stopped scoring goals ... seems like Hal 2 all over again .... but our defense has been good ... helped by playing 2 deep center mids in defensive roles ... which has hurt the attack ... that's for LM to solve... get some good ball to those up front and we will score ... to date the lack of decent balls to the strikers has caused the goal drought ... what has affected the balls to the strikers is playing two deep mids ... but once we gel a bit more and learn to play from those defensive roles to the strikers scoring will improve ... I still expect to be in the top 4  and pushing for a grand final spot...

The big test will be the coaching staff ... they have picked the players and a pattern ... now to use the talent in Wee mac & Travis to get service up  front .... Can LM & AT pull it off ..... HHHHMMMMmmmmm time will tell but I hope so ...

Don't care too much about the ladder this early... (not too much)
Do care about our attack, squad balance and performances though.

MF, we changed to 442, presumably to try to solve the goal drought and give Matty some well earned respite. And have still struggled to get on the sheet. 4231, you expect it... but 442... you hope to look more attacking than we have I think...

I don't feel doom and gloom...
I'm actually hopeful of a win over the gold coast with a few nice bucks of my punts ;D
Made a motza on Fury beating Bling ;D

My optimism is based on...

Hopefully Doig to return, allowing Boogs to push right and Porter to get the hell out of Right back and solve our RM problem. Weemac to return inspired form playing at international level and unite and inspire our Travis aided midfield. Hutch in form. Wilko and Boogs in form. Heffs form not entirely consistent, but against Danning was exceptional (and Minnicon is away!) I also highly rate Pedj and think he will be up for this one. In fact my heart says the entire tema will be. I also felt Kwas was looking solid and was surprised at his relegation to the bench but believe this was a formation issue and still do...

So what are my main fears...

Playing negative against a team that if you don't pin them back have too much quality and firepower.

Their Porter absolutely destroying our Porter if he's still at RB. Hopefully he won't be... and hopefully there's will still be out with his calf strain.

Culina dominating possession and tempo in the midfield.
(Pedj and Hutch to shut him down)

Having 2 of our 3 strikers still scoreless after 6 games.
The fact that 1 of our currently starting strikers hasn't to put a single shot on goal yet. That Troare, van Den Brink and Thwaite have looked excellent for GCU against attacks in much better form than ours.

Our strike force and AM's must step up...

*Pulling his panties from deeply out of his crack*

Luckily we have centre backs.

;)

Funny what difference a week makes, eh? :piralaugh:

Pretty soon we're gonna have to start 'The "Let's not get carried away, there are 20 games to go and rumours that McGlinchey and Travis can turn water into wine are yet to be confirmed" thread.'

Can confirm though, that they walk on water.

Panties still reasonably bunched.

We have to stop being a Jekyll and Hyde team.

Intensity plus 1 week, limp and disinterested the next.

Must say Elrichs performance for the NYL side was less than inspiring. At one stage towards the 3/4 of the game with him playing right back, the ball was in our box and he was in an offside position closer to their keeper than the halfway.

Wheres the desire to do your best for the team, he should have been busting a gut to get back but was walking and didn't even muster a run the whole way back to position. If he is that far away from fitness, then f**k me whats the lazy pie eater doing?

I also would like to see some consistency. Its good though to know what the prefered line up is, its been a bit all over the shop for the last few weeks

i enjoyed Elrich playing up front and on one counter attack i dont think he left the centre circle, obviously the run wasn't something he was all that interested in taking part

yes true and with good reason
how to stop is the real question?
a sense of trepidation and anxiety has crept in my head for next two matches,
i would gladly be proved wrong

It's funny how different people work isn't it? I strangely tend to feel quite positive about upcoming matches when I've just come off a resounding win over the top of the table side...

Weird huh?

ummm....look at our form? Have we won 2 in a row yet?
very important game next week...if we lose- we have major problems IMHO- just because it is almost impossible to drop that much in 1 week!
Let's if Lawrie + co can rev up the boys!

Sigh...

"If we lose we have major problems..."

If we lose it will because of a reason. Could be major but most likely not.
Your a ridiculous absolutist Kareem.

It's as foolish to say... if we win we'll be unstoppable from now on.

What if we lose after a tight game away where we were in front by 1, then  the ref gets fooled by a Bertos dive... Danny's sent off,  the pen is converted... its now one all. We still play brilliantly with ten and give them nothing... But then they get a fluke and foul goal like Perths recent fourth in the last minute of injury time... We've just lost... Major problems kareem??  (Apart from another Danny brain snap I'll give you ;))

OR...

we could win 4,2... but have played like shite like Perth did and still potentially have major problems...

Absolutism is for the religious, young or foolhardy...

"ummm....look at our form? Have we won 2 in a row yet?"

Double sigh...

Like woah.... your right.. we're as good as screwed this week then! Might as well forfeit and put the airfares towards a new coach who likes players that rate highly in the El Kareemo book of... Woah! Kewl style man!

Or...

How about only lost two in seven.
Best defensive record in league.
Sitting in 3rd, only two pints from top...
Just thrashed comps form side, squad has found balance and best we've looked in a loooong while... possibly best we've ever looked to be honest... Just ask Foster ;)

We may lose, we may win. But it'll still only be what it is, and won't mean we will regularly win two in a row... or be unable to win two in a row...

If people are concerned with consistency, I understand, but you have to look at the squad changes and tinkerings that have been occurring, and then if your rational take real fortitude from the way our squad presented and gelled in last weeks game. My point being that we have more reason to believe we potentially can win our next game than we have had for a goodly while!

But regardless Kareem, I don't go into our games with a sense of trepidation and doom ever...
It's something as a player, coach and supporter I've found to be pointless at best and harmful at worst.  My 12 year old does... but he's 12 and is learning with time that his own personal feelings do not influence outcomes except generally his own personal experience leading into a game.

FP please clarify, are you implying that religious or those searching ARE young and foolhardy?
