Singo to help get Beckham to Bluetongue

Everyone's talking about this on the Coast. It would be a huge coup for the club.
However big marquees like Beckham don't bring in silverware for their clubs in the A-League. Kewell, Del Piero, Fowler, - not champions. However they do offer the kind of star power that the other football codes can only dream of. In that sense it is unimportant which club Goldenballs plays for, only that the FFA foots the bill. If he came here, I would see it as balance sheet positive, profit-and-loss negative, but hopefully with the consequently larger capital base we would be in a better position.

One could say that a certain Dwight Yorke as a marquee for Sydney did his fair share to win the silverware for Sydney Or doesnt he fall into the category of a big marquee

THE Central Coast Mariners aim to punch above their weight on and off the field this weekend, as details emerge of the startling bid they have made to lure David Beckham into an unlikely Gosford mission.
As Graham Arnold's men prepare to face Brisbane on Sunday, offers to contribute continue to stack up for the club's "whole of region" bid.

Despite being the poor cousins of the A-League competition, it's understood the Mariners will offer English superstar Beckham $2 million plus incentives - including a beach pad, private chefs, chauffeured limousine and private helicopter - to persuade the LA Galaxy star to turn down offers from Melbourne Heart, Perth Glory and Adelaide, let alone the Middle East and China.

Only this week Wyong Shire Council voted to double their $100,000 investment in the franchise to make Beckham a Coastie while the club is in talks with Sydney's Star casino about accommodating the Beckham clan during what would be a stay of 10 weeks.

Should that eventuate, the superstar would catch a chopper to training sessions at Tuggerah.

The Mariners hope the extent of their ambition will help to attract another sizeable crowd on Sunday for the visit of the Roar, with coach Graham Arnold more concerned about managing the fitness of striker Daniel McBreen.

The A-League's leading scorer -- who boasts more goals than marquee imports Alessandro Del Piero and Emile Heskey -- spent much of yesterday's training session receiving treatment on a massage table.

Arnold though last night insisted his gun forward would be fit for Sunday to lead the Mariners attack.

"It's more about maintenance than anything else," Arnold said.

''I've said previously, and publicly, that we've made Daniel's training load lighter this year. This is just a part of that. With three days leading in he'll be there."

Having already scored five goals this season, McBreen is a vital part of the overachieving Mariners squad that yesterday had goalkeeper Mat Ryan and teenage whiz-kid Tom Rojic named in the Socceroos preliminary East Asia Cup squad.

Speaking after training, Coast goalkeeper Mat Ryan admitted that Beckham had been the talk of the Mariners dressing rooms this past week.

When asked if the name of a certain Spice Girl had also come up, he laughed: "Probably more times than David to be honest. But the whole concept, it really is a no brainer. It doesn't matter where he plays in the A-League, the impact on the competition will be huge."

All the helicopter, chauffeur and chef business makes me not want us to get him. It's like we're not good enough unless we undertake the world's biggest kiss arse act.

Its not that Dibo, its that the Coast is not Sydney. We need to eliminate the hesitation he will have in not being in a major city.
Lets face it, I wouldn't live on the Coast cause my business is in Sydney
He will be here for "much more" than football, & that "much more" will not be conducted on the Coast

I don't have an issue with him living in Sydney - he wouldn't be the first or last CCM player to commute to training.

My issue is that we need to throw ourselves fawning at his feet. It doesn't square with the 'no ego' image. It suggests he has to be coddled. We could put him up in a very nice place on a very nice paypacket with lots of creature comforts *without* needing to do the helicopter and chauffeur treatment.

Its not you or me or anyone for that matter having an issue with him living in Sydney.

Its him (or Posh) having an issue with working & training on the Coast. They are obviously trying to remove the hassle. Lets admit that he is not just your average player forced to commute to the Coast from Sydney for training & game day & we are not your "normal club" that someone of his calibre would sign for. We need to do these things to get him. It also shows him that we are genuinely interested in making this work for not only the football side but the community as a whole. If i'm not mistaken the Limo would have been offered by someone to the Mariners to help make it happen, along with the rest of the incentives.
Its the communities way of wanting to be a part of it.

Ah yes, I forgot about Dwight Yorke. But I also forgot about Juninho and Jardel. I'm not saying these great players aren't worth having, but I am saying they're silverware neutral propositions.

He was a very big marquee player and him and Corica are the only reasons we didnt win the GF.

Beckham is 50 x bigger than Yorke.

The press would be unprecidented.

I was in Armidale this morning and a customer is thinking about coming down for Sundays game. I said what about if Beckham was playing?....he laughed and said i'd be shutting the shop and following you down and going to every home game for the rest of the season!

Jardel was a fat joke.

Juninho was good but the average punter in OZ would not have heard of him. Put him in a decent side and he would have shined.....Brisbane or Victory (a few years back) and you would pick up silverware.

More people in Oz have heard of Beckham than Julia Gillard!

Put him in Sydney or Heart...no silverware.

Give him to us, Perth, Bris or Victory and he will win you the comp.

No.

Its like we are serious.

The FFA and private investment will foot most of the bill.

f**k it.... i'll throw in a case of Crownies as well.

Pat another big pro is our football. We are second on the ladder, renowned for being the most consistent team, are playing a great brand of football and famed as having a terrific dressing room. For someone who really cares about his football, we are a great team to join. As opposed to say heart languishing down in 9th, with a new inexperienced coach would be pretty hard pressed you would think to lure him.

In terms of the changing the world appeal, the little club that could, with it's new Australian first in facilities couldn't do us any harm. It's a nice pitch.

I think having an established, successful and respected coach in Arnie is a massive plus.

I think Mayor Lawrie is a secret weapon in getting this up. Just imagine he pulled this off? Ha, what a coup!

Agree with all of that - plus the perfect bloke to look after an ageing body - Andrew Clark. For references please see Stewie Petrie, Patrick and Macca.

If it comes off would be awesome. As long as there are no negative financial issues the only issue i can see is if it is for a 10 game stint only....we may take time to re-adjust at the business end of the season if he leaves just before the finals. Even still, would take him in a heartbeat. Good guy, possibly the best role model in sport. Still fit and an underrated player. Would fit in easily to our team i reckon.I could be wrong but think he has been voted best player in the last MLS season. He would pack out every game home and away, no question. Every sports fan in the world would know who the Mariners are....and the profile of the A league would go through the roof. Of course, it'll be a bit of a circus and i don't usually advocate all this but the benefits will be huge.

Some of the talk is surprising but understandable. CCM have steered away from ego's and focused on inclusive team spirit to great reward so taking on arguably one of the biggest names in the world (period) seems counter-intuitive.
This is a pretty special exception to the rule however. The benefits have already been stated by others here, with some I hadn't even considered as yet. Along with those mountainous extra-benefits also comes a player who has the quality of legends and will easily be worth more goals than he costs in disruption to team flow. To boot he's a known nice guy, minimal ego, family-focused type who does actually sit well with the team spirit ethos.
To get him our bid needs to stand out from others - and impressively this has been what's occured, including covering for any options/preference the Beckhams might feel they need at this stage in their lives.
Honestly I think if Australia ends up being his choice then CCM it is...I suspect that helping the smallest team will tickle him yet isn't a compromise to his game play because it's also one of the best he could join in a footballing sense. Lifestyle-wise it's as good or better than anyone else in Aus can offer.
The real competition will come from the likes of sentimentality etc. i.e. playing where he grew up

3 other factors that have been overlooked that may influence Beckhams decision:-
1) Bosnich, as a former team-mate of Beckhams & a former player with us,may be able to guide him towards us.
2) Mel B lives in Sydney. Her friendship with Posh may influence the decision
3) Singo has offered the use of a helicopter which means they could live in Sydney & Becks could be at training in say 20mins.

As Becks stint initially would only be 10 weeks are we wrong in thinking that Posh and the boys would come out here with him. Taking the boys out of school and living in Star may not be ideal for them for 10 weeks So just maybe they may stay behind until Becks decides to sign on for a longer term. Maybe they could move into the other Star . . . the Penthouse at the Star of the Sea and enjoy the Central Coast up close.
On the plus side of all of this speculation is the amount of FREE publicity for the Central Coast region and the Mariners that has been generated from all this.

With respect.....this post shows a fair bit of ignorance. Beckham dwarfs ADP in profile and star power. As players, Beckham is definately on ADP's level, apart from in the penalty area. In some areas of his game he is superior to ADP.

No disrespect perceived :) I know my own limitations and certainly have plenty to learn about football.
Much as with Phonix' post, I suspect we'll probably have to agree to disagree on this... Regardless, I shall proceed to discuss it because, obvious I don't know when to quit ;)

What I'm getting at with the star power, is that I think you need to separate the view. There's star power, of the sort that gets bums on seats permanently. I would expect this sort of attraction to generally affect football fans who might not previously have followed the A-league, including casual fans who like the game but don't follow it particularly intently.

Then there's the Beckham class of star power. As previously mentioned, I would expect that to attract visitors, certainly for a 10-game spell... From that POV you might be right about the value to the team. But I would expect many more of those, to barely even be casuals... More novelty visitors who are unlikely to come back.
Yes, it's then up to the team to convert them, but that is a task which is much bigger than a couple of individual games, if they are not currently interested in the sport.

I do know when to quit though, when it comes to the discussion re his comparative quality to ADP though, because I can see that we will never agree on that ;)

Nebbake, we will have to agree to strongly disagree. For me it's very much what Wombat and Scottmac said.

The two things I really see going for Heart is being in Melbourne (Not inconsiderable) and also the fact they desperately need better crowds and FFA would be right behind Beckham signing there as a result you would think. But small home crowds, can be a turn off too...

I'm happy to disagree, keeps it interesting.
I to thikn that he would be a bigger chance at Melbourne, taking into account perceived lifestyle considerations etc.but we'll see, from what I see in papers, Real has expressed an interest as have a couple of English teams. I think he's done his bit when it comes to working to promote the game (for all that I said about his star power) so unless he has similar thoughts to ADP, on that sort of thing, I think it'll be a tough battle against that sort of teams.

Meh... I will admit, I'll probably not be upset if we do land him, we can agree that it won't hurt the club... I guess my concern is whether it'll benefit it to the tune of anything near his market value.

This is the crux of the matter. From a football sense it would be an emphatic no. We wont gain on the field any where near whats paid to him. It will be up to Lawrie & the COE etc etc, to bleed him for the value off the field & in the stands.

As Becks stint initially would only be 10 weeks are we wrong in thinking that Posh and the boys would come out here with him.

TBH I just assumed they would be & never saw it this way. You could be right & it would make alot of sense.

I see that he's just arrived back in UK with wife & family, and they're saying words about Eton school. That would indicate the whole family wouldn't be coming here, but it doesn't say he wouldn't be averse to a couple of months away.

I dont think that would be the case when he has a game to play on Saturday.
