unless we are goin for a draw there is no way  we can play with just sasho up front and expect to win ..   caceras and elrich especially elrichs crosses would  be useless and wasted if it was only sasho in there to pick  the crosses up

Sash scored a header off a Caceras cross last Saturday..

Seb Hassett, SMH:

"The F3 Derby is poised to kick off the new A-League season in
typically feverish style, writes Sebastian Hassett.

The first time the Central Coast Mariners squared off against the
Newcastle Jets, Stewart Petrie was still scoring goals, Ned Zelic was
back in Australia, both sides had a Carle brother on their books and
the Sunday afternoon crowd of 5917 wasn't considered all that bad.

Things have come a long, long way since then. Petrie has returned to
Scotland to close his career, Zelic has just retired, the Elrich
brothers now have the sibling rivalry and when the two teams go head
to head in tonight's opening match of the A-League for 2008-09, a
crowd of 15,000 at EnergyAustralia Stadium is a more likely figure.

Dubbed the "F3 Derby", the Mariners-Jets rivalry has grown so fiercely
that the supposed El Clasico between Sydney and Melbourne now has
serious competition for the season's most eagerly awaited match.

The rivalry exploded during last season's A-League finals series over
the course of three sensational matches, the climax of which was a
controversial finish to the grand final.

Down 1-0 to a Mark Bridge goal, Central Coast were denied a penalty in
the dying moments after the ball appeared to strike James Holland's
hand.

The Mariners players converged around referee Mark Shield and
goalkeeper Danny Vukovic famously lashed out at the official's arm.

Mariners coach Lawrie McKinna says he doesn't need to remind his
players of just who they're up against tonight.

"We could probably turn up on Friday and not say anything to the
players, [we'll] just put 11 on the park and everything else takes
over there's definitely an edge when it comes to the Jets games,"
McKinna said yesterday.

"To open up the season in Newcastle, away from home, it doesn't get
any harder or better than that."

Hoping to throw a spanner in McKinna's plans is Newcastle's star
striker Joel Griffiths, whose hard running and bustling play was vital
to the Jets in the four matches the two teams played inside six weeks
last season.

"You expect a little bit of everything in these sorts of matches,"
Griffiths said. "The fans don't see eye to eye, and that definitely
spills onto the pitch and there's always that extra bit of spice in
these games."

Noted for his aggression and passion, Griffiths has also flirted with
controversy in these fixtures, making contact with an assistant
referee's groin during last season's round-seven clash in Gosford.

"I am good friends with some of the Mariners players, but when the
whistle blows and it's game on, it's a whole new ball game. It's
definitely a case of white line fever," Griffiths said. "It's a really
good occasion that we've made for ourselves and this will be a
fantastic contest."

One of those mates is Andrew Clark, who Griffiths shared the pitch
with at Parramatta Power in the National Soccer League before they
went their separate ways. With Clark likely to start in defence, he
could well be the man McKinna deploys to limit Griffiths's impact on
the game.

"I end up coming up against Joel all the time, we played together at
Parramatta so we've known each other and have been either teammates or
opponents for a long time," Clark said yesterday.

"I really love playing against Joel, I think he's a good athlete and
it's good to be able to match yourself against players like that.
We've come out fairly even over the course of the times we've played
each other, and I'm well up for this time around as well."

Born in Gosford, Clark understand how important it is to the Central
Coast community for the Mariners to win bragging rights, even if the
players try to prepare for the match as they would any other fixture.

"As a professional you try to go into each game with the same mindset,
but inevitably, when you play against Newcastle and the history that
goes with it, you're aware it's a game of much greater significance,"
Clark said.

"When you're bumping into people in the street all day, every day,
they're always talking about our next game against the Jets. It
becomes a bigger game, and it's a really important game for our fans,
but we do try to keep the preparation like normal."

While Griffiths is originally from the southern suburbs of Sydney,
he's quickly taken to being a Novocastrian.

"The very first moment I saw the draw for this season, I was looking
forward to this game," Griffiths said."But there's also going to be a
lot of nerves as well, and there's plenty of new faces, too."

"There's so many talking points and these are the games you like the
play in, where all the talk on the street is about what might unfold."

One of those new faces is Newcastle's striker Edmundo Zura, signed on
loan from Ecuadorian club Imbabura with the promise that he could be
one of the most exciting talents ever to set foot in Australia.

But if Clark has his way, the Mariners' back four will band together
to make sure Zura's trademark goal celebration - pulling out and
donning a Spiderman wrestling-style mask in a tribute to a late
teammate - isn't seen for some time.

"All I know about him is that he wears a mask," Clark said."We'll just
treat him as any other player and see if he can stand up to the
Mariners' style of football."

here is their squad:

SQUADS NEWCASTLE: 1 Ante Covic (gk), 2 Adam Griffiths, 7 Kaz Patafta, 8 Matt Thompson, 9 Joel Griffiths, 10 Jin-Hyung Song, 11 Tarek Elrich, 12 Jobe Wheelhouse, 13 Adam D'Apuzzo, 15 Jason Hoffman, 16 Ben Kantarovski, 17 Antun Kovacic, 18 Noel Spencer, 20 Ben Kennedy (gk), 23 Edmundo Zura (two to be omitted)

I reckon they will go

-------------------Covic
T Elrich----A Griffiths----Kovacic----A D'Apuzzo
----------------Spencer
Patafta-----------Song-------------Thompson
------------J Griffiths----Zura

Could be a good side on the break but I reckon we can do some damage if we get behind them

With Matty Simon available I think we'll go

-----------------------Vuka
Clark---------Bojic-------------Wilko---------D'Appuzzo
Elrich--------Porter-----------Hutcho--------Caceres
-------------Petrovski----------Mrdja

Bench - Redmayne, Simon, Osman, Stringers

Heff to miss out as he's had little training and won't want to be risked.

Lawrie will always stick to 4-4-2 if he can especially with specialist wingers in the squad now,  I'd expect Simon to come on for Mrdja at some stage (last 30), Osman can play anywhere in the middle in required or RB, and stingers although not 100% can slot in at the back if needed (Clare could also come across.

I'm expecting D'Appuzzo to be put under a huge amount of pressure, Griffo will be attacking him as much as possible to unsettle him, he's bound to be nervous and TBH against Sydney at home he was shocking in the first half, something only experience will fix!

We're bound to play with plenty of width and CM will probably sit pretty deep, a lot of work will be expected from the front 2!

Jets will play their usual game, hopefully out boys can get the job done!

Was gonna do the Radio because of the Roosters and Storm game is on during this game.

I don't have the sports channels on foxtel and I don't wanna travel to scum land.

It may be like me ... I can't stand to enter the grounds of that dump.

I look the day off, and will be heading off just after school zones finish. Catch a meal in Hamilton or thereabouts.

I'm fired up!  :pirashoot:

At home about to start getting organised. Our whole company is moving office this weekend and I've been onto all my staff all week about getting organised. Rounded them all up this morning and kept them organised all day so everything would be ready for me to leave work early so I wasn't rushed to go to the game

:piralaugh:

Anyway, gotta go to NZ on Sunday for work, so I reckon I deserve half a day off today.

:ashamed:
