Mariners plan to be flat-track bullies - Michael Cockerill - August 13, 2009

CENTRAL Coast Mariners coach Lawrie McKinna reckons there's nothing wrong with the way his team plays football but admits he's looking forward to a rare treat for Friday night's F3 derby against Newcastle Jets - a pitch worth playing on.

Last week's stunning first-up win on the road against defending champions Melbourne Victory was a cause for celebration inside the dressing room but once again a cause for criticism outside it.

Whether the Mariners can ever shake off perceptions they play route-one football remains a moot point. What is not in dispute is that for the past two seasons any hopes of playing a short-passing game have been effectively sabotaged by the playing surface at Bluetongue Stadium, which went from one of the best in the A-League to the worst in what seemed to be the blink of an eye. But having weathered a storm of complaints and embarked on some serious remedial work, the ground staff in Gosford have finally managed to turn back the clock. McKinna likes what he sees.

''It's finally getting back to what it was and that's given the players a massive lift,'' he said.

''We trained on it on Monday and even though it wasn't cut, you could see the difference. The ground staff have worked hard and credit to them. We've now got it all to ourselves, so it's only going to get better. Seeing the pitch has given the boys a big lift, believe me.''

Confidence is already high in the Mariners camp after their 2-0 win in Melbourne, even if the credit hasn't flowed.

Asked if he felt his team needed to play better to beat the Jets, McKinna replied: ''Obviously, it's a different game, both teams are coming off good wins but I thought we played good down in Melbourne, so I don't think it's a matter of needing to change too much. We'll probably be a bit more attack-minded but generally speaking that's how we want to play.''

New Scottish defender Chris Doig, who complained of a tight calf after the game against the Victory, was back on the training ground yesterday, making it likely McKinna will name an unchanged side.

What? No local RL or RU finals to be played there? Or will that happen closer to the "rest period" scheduled for the pitch?

Now to see if they can make use of the flat track. Hopefully it will make for a better game. Here's hoping one day that we own the stadium and get to dictate when and what is played on it.

Son just phoned to ask me to buy another couple of tickets ... wants to go now with a friend ... I think it's building up to be a fairly decent crowd.
