Round IV Mighty Mariners V Glory

Much better this week. Apart from the first 20 minutes a dominating performance. Thought the lads lacked confidence until they scored but after that controlled the game. Lots of good performances, but for me Matty Simon, McBreen and Griff had strong games and Bernie surely now looks set for regular starts.Still raw but looks the part. Musti for me needs more game time so same first 11 for next week if fit.

@localpom - I agree. Same line-up for next week

McBreen had a great game.
I hope he NEVER plays striker again. Alternate between him and Musty depending on tactics...

@stylecafe
I'd have been glad to make it a long plane ride home...but Perth play Jets next week at the Scumdrome...I wonder if they stay in the area?

It has taken over a year but we have finally found McBreen's postion.
MOM for me.
Good to see many of the others finding some form.
Hopefully the beginning of an improving curve back to last season's form.

Need to keep same starting line up. No one that came on, even Musti, made a definate claim for a spot. Lot's of positives from today though. Wilko and Musti will be much better after today. Game on...we are back!

McBreen close to best on ground

i thought arnie was gunna run off the bench and head butt ryan.
when he ran the ball up his leg for a catch. with their brazilian
bearing down on him.

Agree with AM, McBreen was MOM for me too. Worked his socks off.Matty also a stand out out, tracked back to defend on a few occasions. We have a great squad of mostly young with a few experienced guys thrown in,think we are too quick to criticise on here. We will have another good season. Don't ever forget we have the smallest budget, and are still the club that punches above it's weight!

Shame about the crowd..good game otherwise for me, what a refreshing change to have a fkn quick striker in Ibini who just needs a foot head start on his defender and he won't be caught!

Amini was pretty useless when he came on but a necessary blooding, will be hard to keep a spot in the team for him with Mcbreen playing like that!!

Shame about the crowd but i will commit to getting 10 for the Melbourne Victory game. Can anyone match that?! We are all responsible for increasing crowd numbers.

I can't believe Zwaanzwijk hasn't been mentioned for his sterling performance. The guy is a rock, and won everything that came his way. Covered for Wilko a couple of times (not surprising, as Wilko will need a few weeks to get back into it).

And Pedj had by far his best game of the season - more like the player of last year

Agree that Dutchy had a fine game. Pedj( my favourite player) also getting back to his best. Really, we are looking good for next week. Let's keep the positive comments flowing, TBH i hate all the negativity.

u aren't a true mariners fan if u aren't negative

We need to be a bit more positive! I have been a fan from the first game so know what is all about and have been coached by Mossy so have played the game(not to a pro standard but ok). We will go ok this year.

Amazing what the score does to posts on this site.

Today was absolute shite. We played much better in the second last week. An awful performance from what can only be described as a 2008 - 2009 Mariners side. The only positive is that it was the first time we had our first 11 on the ground and Perth played much worse. Also Pellegrino did not make the pitch. Bring on next week.

As someone posted on TWG... (name= sharp)
"Appologies to the neutral, that game was simply about ccm getting back on the winners list.. what the hells going on with our midfield.. who are these imposters out there "

Brilliantly said!
At this point in time, the 3 points were very very important.
I too liked last weeks play a lot more...but I rather the 3 points.
Moving forward, let's combine the 2 performances...play well and get the result

Bit harsh, Perth better side than Newcastle. TBH we dominated all but first 25 minutes against a side that are the other end of the ladder. Not sure what game you were watching Scottmac but thought we did pretty well. Plenty of room for improvement but a definate step in the right direction.

Did anyone notice the amount of slipping on the watered field, For mine young Ryan seemed to slip for the Perth goal. Surely the watering should be done an hour before the game - not minutes before.

That was like having sex after a long drought: unattractive and frustrating and won’t live long in the memory but, OMG, what a relief! When things simply aren’t going right you have to knuckle down and work your way through it and that is just what the Mariners did today. The well-oiled machine still isn’t running well but there was enough there to hope that this game marks a turning point to the season. Perth were all over us for half an hour but being Perth it couldn’t last. After Chris Coyne’s ageing body gave way and Arnie told McBreen to push further forward we began to get back into it and as we did so the Perth challenges became later and more cynical.
Travis Dodd made his only contribution to the game with his goal; it looked as if Ryan may have lost his footing but he probably wouldn’t have reached it and Mehmet’s effort may or may not have been saved but it missed anyway. But I doubt you would ever have thought you would have heard any commentator say “Matt Simon’s first touch was sublime and a cool finish too”. And Matty Simon was heavily involved in Bernie’s winner too after a surging run from Griffiths. If Hughes had scored late on it would have been an injustice but Ryan got the angles right and Hughes didn’t. I thought we did enough to win and although it wasn’t pretty at least we got the three points.
Mat Ryan – not his finest game but any kid who flicks the ball up in the air with his foot is a kid with supreme confidence and freedom of spirit.
Pedj – his best game of the season; not quite there yet but dynamic and committed. One of our best.
Josh Rose – another one playing his way back to form. Strong defensively and but just lacking the finesse in attack to match last year.
Wilko – welcome back. Did almost nothing but made all the difference because the defence did havet to worry about a weak link. One super piece of defending in the second half to remind us he is a class act.
Griffiths – was missing in action early but got stronger; his run which led to Bernie’s goal was excellent. Has been lucky that Hutch and Musialik aren’t available to push him.
Patrick – always involved, does all the heavy shifting in defence. Another big game.
McGlinchey and Bozanic – no lack of effort but the timing is still missing. Can only get better
McBeen – a decent job in an unfamiliar position but not the long time answer. Has enough strength and tricks to cause problems.
Matt Simon. My MoM – takes all the hard knocks and gives them too, works unceasingly. Fine goal and good shot for the second. Just hope he keeps his frustrations in check.
Bernie – a breath of fresh air. Uninhibited and a pleasure to watch. Not perfect, his touch letting him down but looks as if he just wants to have a good time
Musti – should be called Rusti – looked as if he hasn’t played in a while and appeared worried about all the expectation. Did nothing but can only benefit from the run out.
Hearfield – looked sharp and lively in a cameo –will get more game time if the mids don’t aim up.

Note: we are priveleged to have three such exciting young talents at this club in Ryan, Ibini-Isei and Amini. They don’t always fire but each has a wonderful outlook on the game and bring joy and entertainment when they play. We are watching future Socceroos.
