I don't want to sugar coat it but we were very ordinary.
The first half was terrible....the second half continued to be rubbish until Luis came on.
Our movement, disorganised and poor.
Our passing was very poor.
Our spine (apart from Monty) is non existant.

This review is without the help of a TV replay....so I'll do my best.

Izzo 4. The worst of our 3 keepers.
Roux 4. Back pass has woeful and didn't even overlap properly going forward today.
Neil 6. At fault on their second goal but had a reasonable game apart from that.
Posco 6. Worked hard but not 100% convincing.
Ascroft 6. Some good challenged but could have done better on the 2nd goal.
Not one of the back 4 defending to the required standard IMHO.
Fab 6. Scored a good goal but apart from that below his best.
Monty 7. Was going well, shame about the Red.
Rose 6. Looked composed but doesn't create enough for my liking. I think McGing is a better option at this stage.
Stella 5. Pretty anonymous. No better than Caceras.
Austin 5.5. Touch let him down today. He was nice and aggressive and gave a great assist for our goal.
Fletcher 4. Very poor. Built and plays like a cart horse. Missed an easy header.
Bingham and Heff2 both look better.
Impossible not to improve on that debut.

Onto the only two highlights....

Luis Garcia. 7.5. Created our only goal. Is a class above. Tony should have brought him on at half time as the first 45min we got mauled.
Nice crowd and pretty good atmosphere.....the place would have been buzzing if we hadn't had played such stifling boring football in the first 60 mins.

Wanderers 7 and 8 were too classy for us

My thoughts: Bray should have started over Izzy. He has way more confidence and composure and owns his box. Izzy should have stopped both goals. We need experience in the back line. Please Please Please, Wilko come home. We need your leadership.

We were pretty ordinary in the first half but better in the second. If you look at the states the shots taken and shot on target are very similar so I think we deserved at least a point. Not sure about Fletcher. Seem strong but daily slow. Need to wait until he has a few more games under his belt to make a judgement. Bingham looked alright when he came on as did Mcging. Both fullbacks were terrible tonight.

It has to be said Garcia is all class. He is sot super fast any more and picks his moments to move but he creates so much time by his superior ball control. The guy doesn't even need to look at the ball. Head is always up ready to fire the killer pass. I think all the doubter will be cowing in the corner (look at the entire SBS crew and majority of Fox).

Well done to the Mariners staff for pulling this off. Makes me want to buy that stupid palm tree shirt and put Garcia's name on it.

I have to say... I actually thought our CBs did a decent job today.
Posco was a f*****g MACHINE. The way the first half went, we might as well have played 1-8-1 except we had the of the 8 running in circles in defence and Posco pulling it out of the fire a million times.
Second half Ascroft was recognisable again. Was fairly happy with CBs.
Neil seemed a bit hot and cold but - he copped it quite a bit from WSW. A couple of times they boxed him in and then sent someone like Nicholls in as an enforcer - it wasn't just that one time.
On a whole though - I like him better in mid.
I thought Izzo had improved today. Could he have done better off the second one?
For sure...
But his defence should have never put him in that situation AND we were down to 10.
Not impressed with Fletcher so far... Much prefer Bing, but i Tino be indicated himself, last week, that he's not up to 90 minutes yet.

What can you say

We found a new way to loose .... how many games this year have we lost in the final five to ten minutes ...

Garcia brilliant the rest varies between poor and poorer...

Fletcher for all the talk was difficult to watch...

I almost refuse to believe we have not discussed the position Neil found himself in ... why why why ...

At some point coaching must be questioned

A game day improvement ... and maybe I am slow at not seeing it before ... but no stadium talk in the final minutes pre game... someone is listening ...

We're not getting any traction in midfield, which we haven't (barring the odd game) for the past two years - until really Garcia came on today to show what we have been so sorely missing.
The way I see it is we look 6 of one and half a dozen of the other. If we want to sit compact and hit on the counter, ok, then please dispense with the half assed pressing and sit tight. On the counter, you must release fast, while their fullbacks are running backwards and our forwards forward. We did this WAY better against Victory. Fab and Austin need to be able to run onto balls. We also switch the ball far too slowly. The players often take two balls to do what could be done in one. It shows a lack of confidence - which speaks of a lack of experience. As a result we are easily read and contained in attack unless one of our flyers pulls something off - or Ascroft goes on a run (I liked it). And 9 times out of 10 today in our first half we were simply dispossessed. I was actually worried the young players were worried about having Louis watching them or something. Just seemed so skittish out of the gates.

Otherwise if we want to return to our all out attack again. Ok, then two fit strikers with a now proper ten behind them. With only Monty screening but the full backs should not be required to overlap as much or press as high.
Louis will help in whatever we do - but we need to be clearer in how we want to play. We look like an attacking game plan that lost its way, recovered a little by shifting defensively and now is caught between two worlds. Funny that. o_O
Defensively we must decide if we are a frenetic 5 seconds of fury to win the ball back like we did first half against MV, and like WSW did first half against us. But just like us they ran out of puff in the second half, and we had them on the ropes until we went to ten and they got fresh legs on.

But really, why I'm too condemnatory, is that whether we like it or not, a lack of organisation and weak structure has to be expected of a side that has changed so much in such a short space of time, and especially one so young. With Roy back, a couple more astute signings, and Garcia for a pre season into a season... and the group may really come of age. As it stands, going to be a tough ask to dramatically shift now when all the other sides have had less disruptions and have already hit their strides.

But at the very least we'll get to see a lot of great balls and I suspect a few goals from Louis to take some of the sting out.

Team selection was horrible. We moved away from the 3 workers in midfield and got murdered by Wanderers work rate. Another example of confused thinking by our "coaches".

Izzo, Stella and scarily, Fletcher are not HAL standard. To be fair, Sim is better than Stella and at least Fitzy ran around a bit. Why punt Heff for a lumbering donkey like Fletcher is beyond me. Lazy, uncommitted and with a terrible 1st touch. Bingers is a better option

Moving Neill to LB didn't work (again).

As for our defending, that's football 101,they either aren't being coached or aren't listening.

Garcia was absolutely sublime thankfully

I thought we went out with too many positional changes .
no rose senior , no mcging , I as well thought bingas should have started.
flecter looked like a guy without a lot of football , re stella
young rose has some great control.
izzo wasn't that bad .

posco was outstanding. mom by a country mile.

garica is every thing we could have hoped for . when we scored , he only had eyes for Austin .
ooh if we can only keep him happy for this and the next season.

As stated in various posts above.

I thought we were finally becoming settled into a 4 3 3 structure which seemed to work with players starting to fit into their positions.

Last night massive changes to structure and positions.

Players looked lost and on edge.

In attack there were far too many touches with no one looking to pass until they ran out of space. Very little anticipation and attacking of the ball. Only Monty, Fab and Posc seem to have it. Is this just inexperience or a lack of confidence or commitment(or all three)? Some of our players better develop it quick smart if they want to progress

Rose senior missing was massively baffling and didn't we pay for that omission.

Izzo has a slow reaction time which can prove fatal. Not so much in reactionary saves but in making decisions whether to go for the ball or not. His distribution is far to slow and not up to scratch. Definitely not our best keeper on the showings so far this year.

Loved Garcia's work. If he can conserve his energy and just direct from #10 he should be able to play more minutes.

I will comment further (and on some what appeared very dodgy decisions) when I get around to watching the replay.

I think at this stage a lot of the blame for that loss lies with the coaches. Like most of the team it looks like they are also are on a steep learning curve.

What the hell is going on with the seating??

I usually sit in bays 44 or 45 which up until now was GA. I've been asked to show my ticket some days and not others.
Now it's GA Gold. What the hell is that?

I like sitting up there for the view and getting undercover. The Mariners will get getting some feedback from me if I can't sit up there from now on.

Ive been sitting at the back of Bay 17 for years and tonight I had to move cause some once a year blow in had a ticket ...my argument of years and years of membership achieved nothing with the blow in or the security bloke...pissed me off no end

now to the game...we were fairly ordinary, how the drive bys only had one going into the break eludes me, have to agree Posco was the best back by a rural kilometre and as for fkn izzo, Tinker and Ally must be royally pinged off....id be losing Stella and fletcher until they get their shit together

and now for a hypothetical, would we have had a commanding lead if Luis had started ?...?

I don't think so recky.
When he came on we lifted.
Had fab got the 2nd goal i think they fall apart.
I think tw needs a look at wombats
Team selection and go with that and we win in the shaky isles

Izzo: was worried heading into the game but he actually impressed me. Seemed more willing for the most part - both goals he was left stranded by dumb decisions by Roux + Neill as well as shit defence in general. 6.5
Roux: Worked his arse off after gifting them the opener. Would be higher except for that. 5.5
Posco: Bossed it in defence as usual, although could have done better for the second goal instead of ballwatching. 6.5
Ascroft: Very quiet night apart from the yellow card. Went missing at crucial times. 5
Neill: Wasn't his best outing. Belongs in the midfield. 4
Monty: Did alright til his brain snap. Disappointing from a leader. 5
Jnr Rose: Seemed to go missing. 4.5
Stella: Tried valiantly but seems to be a touch off the pace. 5.5
Fabio: Thought he was among our best. 7.5
Fletcher: Prepared to go easy given it's his first game in a while but looked sluggish. Appeared to be lacking match fitness. 3.5
Austin: Rocks and diamonds if ever I've seen it. Capable of brilliant runs and great touches in our own two thirds... clumsy in the final third and mishit crosses. 6

Garcia: Was evident he was the best player on the pitch almost from his first touch. A class above and needs to be starting within a fortnight. 8
Bingham: Instantly made our front line look more potent replacing Fletcher. Reduced to a shadow when we went down to 10 men. 6.5
McGing: Was left wanting for WSW's second goal. 5.5

TW: sub timings questionable but ultimately Monty took the result out of his control. 6.5

Our best line up, up to now was something like:

Bray
Roux Posco Ascroft J.Rose
McGing
Monty Neill
Ferreira Roy Austin

Monty is out, Roy is out, Rose is playing well, Roux's out of form, Stella's playing pretty decently.

Bray
Posco McGing Ascroft J.Rose
L.Rose
Stella Neill
Ferreira Bingham Austin

LG is going to need time to come up to pace, but he's likely to take the Stella role.

We will win games like that.

People moaning that if we don't win last night we're not going to win again need to remember that the two teams we've lost to in the last two weeks have convincingly beaten the league leaders away and just gone top, respectively. We're not playing against mugs.

A side like Newcastle would be reaching for the lube if we take them on with the team firing.

And last night at 1-1 with 11 on the field I thought we'd certainly be next to score. And then Monty happened...
