I think we need to swap how we deal with Hutch and Caceres... Play hutch from the start, while the opposition teams have the energy to push high, then switch in Caceres in the second, when we can go more forward...

Hutch was quite displeased with the decision to bench him which he says was last minute.. Hope mossy isn't getting any if the players feathers too ruffled with the changes he's making..

Just watching the post match replay, we could have been 5-6 goals down if things went Adelaide's way on some very good opportunities.. The defence is a mess and needs to improve vastly before the ACL.

A bit of composure with the ball would be good. If Hutch isn't on (Moss's call - trust the boss!) someone needs to cover his job.

Problem actually began with CBs not splitting and even when they did Monty was sitting too high. Reddy was chipping speculative passes and hoping for the best.

When we got the ball forward we made awful choices and gave it up too easily.

In defence, too often we'd try for the hero tackle rather than jockey and delay. Cue disastrous missed tackles and yellow card.

Not a good night, lots to work on.

A good win for the Reds that could/should have been a bigger margin by Adelaide. The commentators said we were playing a 4 - 4 - 2 diamond. I really couldn't tell from the way we played or were allowed to play. However, from my point of view I don't believe we have the quality to play that formation at the moment.

A quick comparison

Years gone by 1-4-4-2 > tonights 1-4-4-2

Maty > Liam

CBs of Wilko/Sainsbury with Patrick Z > CBs of Anderson with Bosnar

Rostyn Griffiths = Monty

left side combo of Rose/ Bozanic > Rose/Fitzgerald

right side combo of Bojic/McGlinchey > Roux/Ibini

Amini/Perez/Rogic > Caceres

Fox has been getting that wrong all season.

4-2-3-1 tonight just as it's been all year.
Last season as well. It's obvious within 10 seconds of play it's not a dimond

It's only been 2 games but bosnar is extremely underwhelming. Seip made obvious mistakes but bosnar is just lost out there.

Kim looks good

The Hutch debate is dead. He is crucial

Duke out to the right, no idea why we keep persisting with him there need to get him at 9.
He has played as much at 9 as wing under moss and he as been just as out of sorts. The socceroos and World Cup pressure has gotten to him maybe? Probably more a gauge of the where the midfield is at and the quality of the overall play of the team.

We need to be starting Duke and Bernie upfront, not Matty. Fitz on one side and Sterj on the other, Kim/Caceres top of diamond.
Hutch or Monty bottom. If it's Monty or Caceres, they have to take up on a bit more of Hutch's composure and safety first attitude that he gets so much flack for, or when temas press well, we'll get completely mauled in possession stats like we did tonight.

Duke on the bench is a travesty and must change. FFS, stop diving in. Terrible defending, and they all know better.

Almost a St Valentine's Day Massacre
There was no love for the Mariners on this Valentine’s Day from the rampant Adelaide Reds at Hindmarsh Stadium. This was a 2-0 rout that should have been a massacre; only wasteful finishing and a sight-impaired referee’s assistant kept the scoreline in check.
Adelaide started as they meant to go on: pressing high, moving the ball calmly and confidently, attacking with pace; the Mariners seemed ill at ease with the slippery conditions, conceding possession far too easily, so it was a real surprise when it was the Mariners who almost opened the scoring. Liam Reddy, who had a dreadful day with the boot, punted the ball long and McKain got his bearing wrong and headed the ball to Bernie Ibini. Ibini’s pace had him clean though but he barely tested Galekovic, lamely lifting the ball wide.
On the half hour the Reds finally got the goal their superior play deserved. Ferreira and Malik outsmarted Rose and Fitzgerald and Malik’s cross was awkwardly diverted by Eddie Bosnar across the penalty area where Carrusca took his time before caressing the gift past the helpless Reddy.
The Mariners thought they had claimed an equaliser when a deflected ball soared high in the air; as it fell Galekovic under pressure from Matt Simon could only weakly clear and Sterjovski headed the ball into the net. It was disallowed, probably for Simon’s challenge on Galekovic, but I got the feeling if it had been in open play no foul would have been called.
Just as it seemed the Mariners might survive til the half-time sheds with just the one goal deficit Adelaide scored again. It was entirely the Mariners’ fault: a lack of self-belief setting Adelaide free. It all looked good as Galekovic made a hash of a clearance under pressure and as the Mariners pressed and harried the defenders it seemed they would make something of it but the press was a mirage. Once the line was broken there were no other Mariners playing high. The team was spread too far apart, no one from midfield or defence was backing up. Adelaide broke down the right, Anderson, conscious of the anti-tackling laws of modern football, half heartedly tried to challenge and meekly lost out. Adelaide moved the ball on and Ferreira finished it off, his shot deflecting off Reddy.
Somewhat surprisingly, despite the 0-2 scoreline, Moss made no changes at half time; he must have said something though, because the team lifted noticeably. Ibini had a strong left foot shot well saved by the flying Galekovic after some impressive intricate approach play but Adelaide countered that when Isaias put Carrusca through but his touch was heavy and Reddy saved the day. Simon came close, and should have done better, with a strong header from Roux’s cross but he hit it wide.
This was better by the Mariners but the more adventurous approach was leaving alarming gaps at the back; at least they were having a go.
Kim Seung-yong replaced Sterjovski but it was Adelaide again with Ferreira skinning Josh Rose; Reddy saved the shot but could not hold it, somehow Cirio placed the wide. Phew! What a let-off! Ferrira again caused problems and it was Carrusca who should have done better. Reddy then came out of his area to head the ball clear but he was still well out of position as Ferreira missed a great chance from distance. Phew again! It was all one way and it seemed as if the Mariners would concede again: they did when Mabil skipped through to beat Reddy, but the lino, in line with the play, somehow called offside when he was a yard to the good. Specsavers should offer a free consultation.
By now Duke was on for Ibini but Duke out wide is a waste of talent although he did produce one excellent run and was unlucky that Simon’s pass to him was just a bit too strong.
Phil Moss had made the brave and correct decision of giving Nick Montgomery the captain’s arm band; John Hutchinson was joined on the bench by Kim Seung-yong; Isaka Cernak missed out. I doubt it would have made any difference who started and who did not: the Mariners were outplayed from start to finish. Adelaide is on the ascendancy, gathering momentum, and full of confidence. The Mariners are finding that the wide ranging changes on and off the field are beginning to take their toll; they are struggling for traction and confidence is low.
On a day where no one stood out I give the MoM to Caceres who while not having the best of games seemed at least to want to try things, to be involved. I will be kind to Kim and hold back any criticism; the conditions were not ideal for his debut. Let’s just say there was nothing from him today to get the pulse racing.

Maybe their graphic machine doesn't have a 4-2-3-1 setting.

After watching last nights game and also all the debate over Hutch I was thinking about if it is time for a change in formation given the current players we have available. The lack of a 10 is hurting us but even then I am not sure they would have enough options moving forward. It also seems the opposition have become very adept at playing between our lines as there can be confusion over who should be picking up.

I think a traditional 4-3-3 may work along the lines of

Ready

Storm. Zac. Bosnar. Rose

Caceras. Monty. Hutch

Bernie. Duke. Fitzy

Wondered what others thought around changing the formation to more suit the currently available players.

I've been thinking 4-3-3 for a while not. And while we sort of do that at times, we never really do. Closest we've gotten is a 4-3-1-2 where the 1 is a ten, and the 2 are actually one striker and one winger, and one of the 3 is just a winger anyway… So just a 4-2-3-1 in the end.

I've been advocating for a change for some time but I think now it'll have to wait until next pre-season

Last night was really poor. There were lots of things wrong, but I think the main one was the midfield... there didn't seem to be one! No protection for the defence, so the defenders were wide open to Adelaide's attacks. And also no creativity for attacks, Matty did alright, when not fouling with his flick ons but no one was running through to pick up the ball after. Another big problem is urgency with the ball...There is none, even in the last 20min when one goal could have got us back in the game.

After being to the Sydney game the other week and home last week, then watching this on TV, this is only the third game I have seen. But each game has been worse than before!

My wife made the comment, at some point, that we needed someone to actually run off some of the 1-2s, without thinking, I responded that, good or not Matty could usually be relied on for that and where was he? Then I realised that half the problem was that he was the only one working for those... Can't pass the ball at the same time as you run to receive the pass ;-)
