Things have changed a lot over the years, but one thing has remained constant and that is our love of the Mariners. People come and go, some like to post a lot and others just like to read. It's up to you how you participate in the community!

If posting is not your thing, you can interact in other ways, including voting on polls, and unlock options only available to community members.

ccmfans.net is not only for Mariners fans either. Most of us are bonded by our support for the Mariners, but if you are a fan of another club (except the Scum, come on, we need some standards), feel free to join and get into some banter.

Also with the use of lone strikers these days we haven't seen a coach brave enough to go back to junior soccer (yep I used that word) & use a back three when not chasing the game. There would have to be a temptation to exploit the advantage instead of having a couple of guys waiting for guys to come forward.

Although you could argue the advancement of wing backs is down to this

We certainly have the athleticism for a press but it's totally against our clog the loo formation.

We decided to do a half arsed press on friday night at one stage & AU took it from there Eugene all the way to the back off our net (2-0). Only time we even looked like getting the ball was when Zac got on the end of it & kicked it into them & they kept marching towards our goal.

If you press it must be organised - One weak link not only makes it useless it makes you vulnerable to the hole that is left.

We could press with
Duke - low 20's - Total greyhound
Ibini - low 20's
Koren - While older should be able to
Fitzy - low to mid 20's
Caceras - low 20's
Simon - Any excuse to run at opposition plays

In my mind the press suits us big time with Monty as cover. We have used it like once or twice in a game very effectively but don't persist with it. It creates turnovers that create space & oportunities for our attackers instead of hoof ball.

However our structure is built on defence - But that defence is structurally built on no press & everyone sitting in there spots from half way back. While successful it's hard to argue to change but I don't think it creates the breaks that a press does. Some are pro press & some aren't.

Watch Duke or Simon they get bored (or especially Duke when comes on & is suppose to create energy) chase the ball in the attacking 3rd by themselves. The rest of the team sit back & think what are u doing

The 9 and 10 may look like they are jogging around aimlessly, but watch them look over their shoulders at the opposition midfielders, they are not trying to pressure the defenders with the ball but cut off the passing lanes to midfield, forcing them to play wide into safer areas

But I do agree that opportunities for pressing are often too quickly overlooked. Teams like wsw are so well drilled at it that it rarely leaves them exposed but often leads to goals. Duke and simon naturally hustle, Kim stated in his first interview that he is high energy or something along those lines, ibini and fitzy are fast enough to get to defenders early and cause trouble, hutch and monty are excellent and breaking down counter attaching play. We just need ando and bosnar to channel big patty and sainsburys exceptional transition defence

Great read, thanks. My double pivot read is based on murdocca dropping back for the adventurous paartulu. But as you very astutely pointed out and I totally forgot, was they defended in 433. This in itself is reason enough to call it a 433.

I found the quote I remember reading from October 2012 on the 442 website.
Unfortunately the link no longer works... (I think because they started a new site 1 month ago).

But here was the quote

Rado Vidosic said:
the only change that we are going to do for these next two games is that we go from two number 10s to two number sixes

The article I am reading also had a quote from Paartulu with his concerns over the change of formation... i.e. less touches.
Interesting
Especially since Paartulu's form dipped throughout that season (I previously attributed it solely to Ange leaving)

So that was the quote I remember reading back in 2012...

You're just looking to start another fight now aren't you? ;)

I mean, I know that racism doesn't tend to be logical or consistent, but still...
By rights, wouldn't that mean that you'd also expect to see a slagfest for Kim or Bernie?... Or Caceres?... Or at least Flores, courtesy of a similar ancestry...

We have plenty of non-anglo players in the team, even a "Maltese" captain as you might recalle...

Just having a laugh.
Dibo is a bit of a Balmain basket weaver.......very PC and clearly not a racist.

LOL Fair point then... One'd have thought that I'd learned to stay out of other people's fights by now, I THOUGHT it was a bit out of character, but as usual, what do I know? ;)

Carry on...

Yeah they are disciplined & I to get it - Just am a bit more of an aggressive wanna be.

We don't have to press for a whole game or even a half. It can be used effectively as a surprise tactic.

Any way it won't happen so I'll have to keep dreaming.

Also watched the last 20 mins - No comment Re: Hutch he was straight swap for caceras in an attacking role barely got in our own half except in extreme cover. Was in the attacking 3rd for most of it or at half way at worst. He should have scored late off Kim's free kick but simon got a toe on it & ruined his perfect run off the delivery. He was so far forward he had to pass forward & was actually pretty effective. He can do it just needs to do it more often. We missed 3 or 4 chances just as they did.[/quote]

His role was further forward, so he played differently to his normal deep lying role.

The thing about Hutch is that he does the job he's given. He has good days and bad days like every player, but fundamentally as much of the criticism directed to him is about the role as it is about him (whether the critics realise that or not).

On other forums I see DMs getting belted around for sitting deep and passing sideways and backwards (Wehrmann, McKay, Musialik, Thompson, Burns among others have all copped it over the years) but they're just doing their jobs.

Agree - Actually his tight circles with ball at his feet could be handy further up the field as we like to turn it over a lot.

I'm saying we should play him higher a bit more. I respect what he does & it's part of the game plan. It's the guys who aren't doing what the team last year could do ounce it went back.

Side Note: He was pissed off at thinking he was playing until team sheet time.

You don't like your captain getting the shits it spreads to the others & if they get disciplined for it they will claim favourites etc. Nothing wrong with not picking him but surely you can let him know earlier. If you just made that decision with an hour to go it's a bit worrying that the coach is second guessing himself.
