So, the further we travel, the worse we play? Brisbane, Tasmania, Perth...
The furthest we have to travel (apart from ACL) now is Adelaide and I think we generally do well there.
Good thing is we mostly have home games left so need to keep our home record intact!

Watching the highlights of the goals I noticed that Patrick was out of position for both goals, especially the second goal in which he got drawn in allowing the space for Smeltz to put away the header.

I've noticed a few of the goals we've copped lately have been from Patrick being out of position. There are some errors sneaking into his game that we haven't seen before. Perhaps his age is finally catching up with him....

I didn't get a chance to see the Perth game, but by all reports they played the best they have for a while. (even if we were quite poor) I guess we're beginning to see the fruits of becoming a long term successful club with all teams lifting for their game against us. Brisbane, Sydney and now Perth games come to mind from the last month or two

I got lucky today: I wasn't able to see this game. Perth away is always difficult; I have often seen the Mariners struggle with this trip, the travel seems to kill the legs. We are top of the table with all the important home games to come. This is a great season and next week will be a fantastic week - and it is all in the hands of the Mariners. This is what football is all about and I wouldn't have it any other way.

Both dutchy and tesco can be loose at times especially when challenging for headers.

We were dreadful really. The fullbacks were woeful. We had zero penetration in the middle with Hutcho being especially bad. Even wee mac was shite.
Impossible to pick a MOM as everyone was rubbish.

I used to admire Rose, but this year he's mostly been a passenger. I've waited all year for him to return to form. Sadly he just doesn't seem hungry anymore. I'm hoping he can find his mojo for the final few matches.

Rubbish Wombat. I think you make a lot of astute comments, but when it comes to Hutch, I just laugh now, your such a total hater and always have been. ;)

We got murdered down our left. 99% of their attack penetrated via our left side. Dodd (who depending who shows up on the day) and Risdon, who is probably one of the most underrated players in the league atm imho - were always going to be very dangerous... and Rose had an absolute shocker and Sterj offers very little in the way of defence.

Incidentally, Dutchy was not out of position on the first goal, Rose was. That was his man. Should have been tracked. Rose was too slow to respond.

Pedj, shocker also. Danny by his amazing standards of late had an off game. Weemac was quiet. That was enough...

Perth were hungry. Every knockdown, second ball and ricochet seemed to go PG's way. But you create your own luck when your the hungrier side. And Gillet who was always going to give them the rub of the green after his GF farce was not a lot of help.

They compressed the midfield, and put pressure on and soon as we tried to play through, end result being we had very little time on the ball and lacked penetration. Long ball, painful as it can be, and was, does have it's place in such moments like this. But we needed a Duke style player on, not Mile, to be effective in this regard, Thwaite is too good a defender and PG's problem has not really been their defence but their attack. Though Smeltz was always going to return to form at some point.

IF we are going to win this year, we still need to deal with pressure a lot better. This is my Mariners bug bear. When teams are a little looser like phoenix, we cut them apart. Compact and or pressing hard teams... WSW, MV etc and we clearly struggle.

This being the case I think the Olly in for Sterj is a bit of must. Though I do think Mile has proven himself a good squad member. And Duke, shit, what do you do? When we bring him on, Weemac left and Macca CAM is not ideal... but the kid should be starting, and you can't drop Danny, or Bernie or Weemac... Do you change shape to 442? I don't really think it's advisable at this point in the season? But I'd like to see Duke start and want to see us cope with midfield pressure better and I think Duke clearly helps create options with his speed, energy and enthusiasm.

In GA we trust I guess...

Nailed it. Arnie slapped the boys post-game from what I've seen on the first point but I too am concerned and unsure as to how well addressed the second point it. Mainly the pressing teams, WSW were compact last time but we dealt with them then. SYD, NEWC & MV all pressed like crazy and we couldn't deal with it. Next few weeks will test and show a lot.

I know it's cliched but maybe it really was the kick up the ars needed. An easy win wouldn't have been great preparation for the next few weeks.

Not a hater FP...but not blind either. He shouldn't be capt and he shouldn't be starting. I had him in my starting 11 for the first 3 seasons but from season 4 he has been on the wane.
Great bloke and great club man but....... Even GA was quoted as saying DM is not his position last year.

I agree Sterj is not starting 11 material.

I think he and Monty (as a unit) are a major part of the reason why we have (so far) the best defensive record in the history of the league.

I'm not sure where GA was quoted saying he's not a DM, but he's made 20 appearances this year and I'm struggling to think of a match where he wasn't playing DM.

His combination with Monty is very solid defensively....the trouble is Hutcho offers very little going forward.

We have probably the best back 4 in the country and a fantastic keeper. We have a very very defensive set up where we clog the midfield in the middle and try to attack down the flanks.

Griffiths and Monty would have been a superior combination.

Hutcho always done a reasonable job.....I just want more from my capt. The quote from GA was last season when he switched him from the wing to Central mid.

Mariners try and walk it in hehe

Arnie's response:
"It was probably the worst performance since I've been at the club," Arnold said.
"We were totally out-enthused and we were second to everything.
"We were definitely second best."
Central Coast tops the ladder on 42 points, having lost just three times this season, and is still in a good position to take out the minor premiership.
But the Mariners have a fight on their hands to retain top spot, with Western Sydney Wanderers (41 points) showing no signs of slowing down, and the next fortnight will prove crucial for Central Coast as it takes on Melbourne Victory and the Wanderers at Bluetongue Stadium.
Arnold said he was unlikely to make knee-jerk changes for the round 22 game against Melbourne Victory at Bluetongue Stadium.
"You don't punish people for one-off performances," Arnold said.
"You expect a reaction next week.
"We've still got our own destiny in our own hands."

I agree Hutch doesn't offer as much in attack Wombat. And he does frustrate me at times. (Though never as much as Rosey just did) And yes, if we still has Griffiths, I think that's a superior pairing too. But it's a fair way from that too, "consistently bad". That's why I think to me you come across to me as a hater, whereas most other things you post seem impartial, reasoned and often on the money.

I might be a bit blind I guess... don't really think so though... my games days are real generational family affairs, and my step mother is totally in love with Hutch and thinks my Father and I are total haters, because she won't hear a syllable out of us that even smells remotely anti Hutch. We have no end of fun winding her up. Can only imagine what she'd make of you !:piralaugh:

The "consistently bad" comment was purely in response to Dibo....who has a blind adoration of Hutcho.

Hutcho is definately adequate and occasionally good.

Clearly, he is not a bad player.....I just question if he is first 11 quality these days.

Generally he frustrates the f**k out of me but when he has a good game I'm the first to admit it.

I remember giving him a MOM once last year and he was especially good on the flank early in the season.

I played with a bloke like him years ago...decent player....who could score plenty from set plays....but would never ever venture forward when he had the ball....maybe he is partly to blame for my frustrations.
