2013-01-19 19.50.30.jpg I thought it was a funny night all around. For a night match the crowd didn't really get into it at all, and the team seemed to be in first gear all the way through.

Having said that the tactics of both teams didn't help. At one stage all players bar the keepers were in a strip of about 30 metres around halfway. Basically in each other's pockets. Hard to find space in that situation.

Am I the only one who thought the crowd looked like more than 11,000? I took a photo from the Western stand after they announced the crowd as the top of the Eastern stand was basically full. Very rarely is that the case. There were plenty down the bottom too and the scum fans took up three bays. Parking was as tough as it's been too an hour before the game. BTW security think they're made of glass. Was asked to move a few times but just had no idea....

Have to grudgingly give kudos to the scum fans. Turned up in big numbers.

Caseres showed enough to me to prove that he can be polished into a rare gem..

I think so. I thought he did well in a match where we didn't see much of a performance from anybody. People are being too harsh on him - a few of our top players were rubbish when they started in the HAL, but we've been good at developing them past that period.

Personally I don't care if Hutcho is relegated to youth, bench, starts getting half a game or what - he's not the impact player he used to be, and....well, there's nothing to say about his captaincy that hasn't been said before.

Rose was majorly outpaced at front, and while we spent most of the match defending, when we did counterattack our midfield mostly stood around scratching their balls; there were a few occasions where somebody made a screaming run down the field but had no support whatsoever and couldn't do anything with the ball himself....

Judging from your photo, I'd say you're in Bay 40, about row F :)

I too thought that the crowd were a bit strange last night. Rarely did the chant of Mariners, clap, clap, clap... get off the ground. I don't know if the crowd were a reflection of the way the team was playing... or vice versa.

Having said that, there were times when Bay 16 were pumping! Who says we need a roof, ala the shed in Perth? The noise emanating from the active support was massive at times. I was very proud.

Still got no voice left, what a night.. went for the full 90. Most packed we've had the bay in ages. Pre-game march went off very well also, may have helped with numbers. Having a new new megaphone made it easier to organise things too i guess. hope everyone who was in bay 16 last night comes back for the rest of the year so we can start building our active support again.

People here are being anything but harsh. He made one good pass all night, apart from that continually lost the ball and was run past all night.

He probably has a ton of ability but last night he looked lost and overawed and was way off the pace of the game.

I feel he was thrown in the deep end, in a vital position, in a tough game against an opposition that gave him no time and far too much was expected.

FFS, no time on the bench, straight in, big ask.

I trust the views of those that have big wraps on him and hope he can be given the time to find his feet and develop his full potential, but let's be realistic.

On Sterj, I must have been sitting in the part of the ground from which he looked average.

Glinch must play at No 10, but must learn when he has beaten enough players by himself and to use his support. How many times, brilliance, then one touch too many?

Suspect Monty was given some time on the bench to contemplate his previous week's performance, He will start for the rest of the season.

Big comeback by the team next week, at least 3 goals.

Massive respect to you, Eggy and the other dude in the cap.......you guys were fantastic and marshalled your troops brilliantly all night.
What was the go with the knob from security giving you a hard time?

Watching the replay on tv...you easily outsung the Scum support. They had good numbers and waved their arms around alot but were fairly quiet for the amount of support they had there.
I put it down to the fact that grunting is quieter than singing or maybe i simply couldn't understand them as i'm not fluent in spastic??

On a side issue did you see those Scummy mugs screaming at Olly when he had a throw in....very embarrassing for them when the effect of the 3 VB's they consumed wears off. Is there anything more pathetic than a Squadrunt in full battle cry? The only think sadder would be a GWS supporter from Wilmott or Hebershem.

I went to the the march & sat in bay bay 16 for the first time this year.
The guys organising the troops did a fantastic job!
They actually gave up watching the game to keep the "Yellow Army" singing all game.

Just a couple of points though (Constructive criticism):-
1) The mexican wave is dead
2) Don`t overdo the individual chants.
Other than that....perfect!

Cheers brother. Really trying to rebuild & get big numbers back. Last night was a good start. There will be another march this friday for anyone who's interested - I'll post the dets separately. The guy from security was a f**king muppet - told me to get off the seat or I was out. Went up to him at half time and he was still be an aggressive knob in my face so I asked to see his license. He refused, I spoke to his manager who said to ignore him and we didn't see him for the rest of the night.

I haven't caught the replay yet but that's bloody good to hear - although we were a little quiet at the start it helped once Eggy, Nevs and I moved down the front I think. Filling from the back definitely helped as well, with thurbs et al involved.

Style - thanks brother. See you there again on Friday I hope. I agree with your assessment of the mexican wave - definitely not something that shouldve been brought out on derby day - however i think the over-arching purpose of that was to engage the wider support as we did on NYE - stadium was pumping once everyone got into the wave and then belted out Mariners 3clap. Anyways.

I thought the 'split chant' worked well again. One half with the first part and response from the 2nd half. Mexican wave has it's place in a bigger crowd. Mainly useful for getting all the other bays off their arses. Agree that sometimes the same chant can go on a tad to long. Better to keep them slightly shorter and rotate.

Being a Friday match and coming from Newcastle, not able to make the 2nd march in time. Had good fun at the last one though!

Good post for me there has been too many changes to the team when really the changes were not needed, from winning the game against WSW we looked like a tight unit then Ollie is dropped now Monty and if they 2 were kept in the midfield then i feel we would have had at lease 1 win out of the last 2 draws we have had ,young caceres looks a good prospect but was never ready for that game .

Just a bit of feedback that may help you engage the rest of the stadium... You do the Mariners 3clap WAY too fast. When Bay 16 start the chant, no where else in the stadium can keep up. It's great that you now get involved in that chant but in all honesty, you tend to put a dampener on the rest of us due to the speed.

Also, it occurred to me on the weekend that if you want crowd participation, you'll have more success with sounds rather than lyrics. 7 Nation Army is a good example. Where I sit, the chant of ole, ole, ole, ole... is starting to take off (after we score a couple of goals). When it was heard coming from Bay 16 on Saturday night, I distinctly heard a few folk get excited and a few of us started to join in. I know it forms part of the "Yellow Football Team" chant but perhaps you might consider just doing the ole's for an extended period at some stage? Just remember... keep it slow.

Please view this as constructive criticism as I, and I'm sure the rest of the crowd, really appreciate the atmosphere that the active support create.

Hmm... First, I too think Sterjovski did fairly well... Maybe you had to be on the eastern stand ;) But looking at his touch and his positioning, I thought he did better than most of our players - surprisingly - not sure how much that says though ;)
For the Cap'n - on Rose - From where I was sitting, half the problem was that he was WAY underutilised. We seem to favor playing on the right wing. The number of times Sterjovski and Rose were running around in a big hole, only to watch the ball get passed to Pedjie, surrounded by Jesters, was pretty disappointing. I noted Rose giving Dutchie a spraying more than once... He does have a temper ;) - and the mids weren't always entirely undeserving of it either.
I think we made it easy for the Jests by playing this way... They pulled everything into the middle and towards the right and we might as well have played 9 v 11 - frustrating to watch, to say the least.
For me, this was also part of what lead to Caceres' relative ineffectiveness... He was swamped... I do also agree though, that he looked a bit overawed and perhaps struggled a little to come to terms with the new level. That's not necessarily bad, probably wouldn't have been a bad idea to have him on the bench for a couple of games - particularly this one.
Finally, I too struggle with understanding the sudden love for Kwas over Duke. All due respect to Kwassah - her serves it after that Heart goal last year, if nothing else ;) - but I think Duke could've made the difference for us.

Finally, just to add my voice to the choir... Good work by Bay 16 in general. There may have been more 'runts there, but I didn't think the volume was much different. Bear in mind too that, I think it's harder to engage the crowd on a day as wet as that one, especially when we're then stuck at nil-all.
I too think that it would be worth a try with the more sound oriented chants for a while - just to get people going. I think the combination of "chants-lead-to-hooliganism" and "OMGTHEYWANTMETOSINGBUTIMAMAN!" make it difficult to start something as relatively complex as "Yellow F0otball Team". But if you get them humming along to something else first, they might be dragged along as the excitement rises ;)

Good to get feedback, but I'm buggered if I can figure out how you can slow down 'Mariners, clap, clap, clap'. Any slower and it would sound like a funeral march.

Ole, Ole, Ole' can certainly be extended. But again, slowing it down? Not sure that's do-able without sounding retarded.

There will always be a delay between Bay 16 starting a chant, and the rest of the bays picking it up and running with it. To me it's not about speed, but I do agree that it's about simplicity and longevity. The more complex the chant the longer the other bays need to hear a few bars before joining in.

But knowing when to stop for a breather is important too. I know my vocals turn into a squeak if it goes too long (unless well lubricated with amber fluid).

Just my POV.

I was surprised that Caceres started. Against a physical side like Newcastle I was thinking we might start with Macca at 10 and Duke up front.

I totally agree.Imo Caceres should have started of the bench. Like Ancient Mariner says he was thrown into the deep end without previous experience @ this level.First appearance into a tough game, a derby where our first half team perfomance did not help the young debutant as imo, it was 2nd worst first half perfomance in a row following the previous week's first 45 v MV.On the other hand I must disagree with AM as I did not see Caceres continually loosing the ball. From what I can recall, in the first half he only got the ball 6 times and lost it only once.He created the first of only 2 scoring chances we had in the first period when he opened up play to Pedj on the right, went for the return and misheaded the cross. The second chance was McGlinchey's creation.A great run that ended with the gk making a great save. When it came to loosing and giving the ball away, it was the experinced ones like Hutch,Olly and Pedj that led the statistics in the first 45 mins of the game.Their ball distribution was pathetic. Neither Macca nor Caceres received a clean proper pass to feet from the DM.They were given hospital balls. In the 2nd half Caceres came in contact with the ball twice down the left flank. First he put a delicate ball behind the defender to MacGlinchey, went for the return and McG kicked the ground. The other was a pass to Rosey who lost it.When the game was starting to open up Caceres was taken off.Imo that's when he should have been starting.Of course the kid has a lot to improve on!!Who didn't @ 20 yrs of age? So does Tommy( goes down easy @ minimun contact),Musty (goes walkabout for long periods of a game) ,Birnie (first touch),Matty( puts unecessary pressure on himself and the defense for not kicking long balls),Duke(first touch & technic) and so on. The exciting part is that Caceres like Tommy and Musty have what only a few do: NATURAL TALENT.While some of our older, more experienced players who have played HAL for years struggle with their touch and simple things like passing the ball to the feet of a team mate, young ones like the 3 mentioned make those basic tasks look easy.Like R.Slater said when Caceres came off: 'He's got a great future".Lets give young ones like Caceres the chance to show their talent.Lets be patient like we were with others and we'll be rewarded.
