More trouble is looming for the embattled Central Coast, with talented midfielder Anthony Caceres on the outer amid suggestions another four or five Mariners players could be in the same position.
The Australian understands Caceres and Nick Fitzgerald will be dropped for tonight’s traditional New Year’s Eve game at Gosford against Wellington Phoenix as the club attempts to break a 12-match winless streak that stretches back to round two.
It is believed Caceres and Fitzgerald, who have been named in a 25-man provisional squad and Matthew Sim, Glen Trifiro and Anthony Kalik, who have been left out, were told to do shooting practice on their own at training on Tuesday.
Caceres and Fitzgerald joined the squad for the final session yesterday morning, but with coach Tony Walmsley confirming Fabio Ferreira and Mitch Austin will come into the XI, indications are they are unlikely to start against the Phoenix.
The situation regarding Caceres, who still has another year to run on his contract with the Mariners, brought a swift response from his manager Tony Rallis.
“Anthony is one of the best number 10s in Australia so to leave him out is mystifying,” Rallis told
The Australian.
“I’ll be speaking with the club but if they are not going to play a player who takes up five or six per cent of their salary cap then why keep him?
“If they don’t want to keep him, then tell us and we will find somewhere else to go.”
The player drama is the last thing the Mariners need amid a disastrous season so far that has seen them win just once in 13 games, suffer a fall in crowd figures and have doubts emerge about their future in the A-League.
It is also having a huge effect off the field with the Mariners faithful losing patience with the direction owner Mike Charlesworth is taking the club, so much so that the NYE game, which normally attracts one of the club’s biggest crowds of the season, could be a flop.
It is believed that up until two days ago a mere 700 tickets had been pre-sold. Clearly the fans are tired of losing and the disintegration of the once-proud family culture at the club.
Walmsley has come under fire for the poor results, but insists the club can turn things around, starting with the Phoenix.
“We have been let down in a number of areas,” Walmsley said yesterday.
“There has been a sea change from me this week where I did some reflection.
“To win (against Wellington) we need a bigger engine (in midfield), one with a bigger work ethic. We need more dynamics in there and that’s what we will do.
“We did well against Brisbane the other week but we were not up to it against Sydney last week. But I think we will do better tomorrow night.”
Captain Nick Montgomery believes the Mariners have “played some great football but not got the results”.
He also jumped to the defence of Charlesworth.
“We are at home, it’s New Year’s Eve, a massive game for us and we know we need to win for the fans so that we can catapult into 2016,” Montgomery said.
“2015 hasn’t been great. It is a tough time but I think the criticism of Mike is harsh.
“People forget he took over the club when it was falling to pieces and could have ended up in the hands of FFA. But, he has cut the debt and is trying to get the club to be sustainable.”
