Anyone here Okons interview, pretty much said this is the only way the team will play whilst he is boss so the players need to learn or move on. After tonight he better sign a whole new team, worst passing display I've ever seen by a HAL team.

Is that what he said? Piss off then.
Isn't that pretty much the exact approach our last 3 coaches had which is why everybody has forgotten what it's like to not be depressed after watching us play?

Coach needs to be adaptable to his players and the opposition. "We're playing this way and I don't care if you're shit at it, we're going to keep playing this way" Is piss poor coaching and a piss poor attitude, and I can't defend Okon if that's his approach.

I think Paulo is right to stick with the system but his player choice has been wrong which I can't blame too much given his lack of options. Faty, Neill, Fabio, Powell cannot play his system and to a degree neither can Rose or McGing.

Fabio was absolutely terrible today, the worst performance I have seen as a Mariners fan (only Iain Ramsay manages to beat him for that honour in a Heart shirt). He had no desire to make an option and constantly forced Galloway to pass backwards when a run into space would have had us behind Victory's defence. He did not track his man and when his player went past him he stopped. He doesn't deserve a spot on the bench next week give Josh Bingham, Lachie Wales or Shelford Dais a go.

Also worst off the ball movement since TW's side got smashed 5.1 in Brisbane in his first season.

. i have never been a big fan of listening to the coach after a game ... but that sort of comment worries me. forget about changing the game plan when we are so obviously in the shit ... i have just been hopeful of a few tweaks here and there

. the biggest issue i have had is our formation and how utterly predictable we are and how simple we have become to defend against. so i hope the above statement is a ploy to catch our opposition unaware

. the main problem that i have is our midfield, our midfield should be what ties our play together ... but it just pulls the team apart:
  • tavares' return may help but that isn't enough
  • three in the midfield is not enough because we don't have enough talent to hold the ball or play the ball
  • we have a forward playing in a three man midfield
  • we have one of the better play disruptors in the league playing as a running/passing midfielder
  • we have a kid who was player of the season for us last year with no support
. we may be able to play around one of the above - if everybody is up to the task - but playing around all of the above when we are struggling everywhere doesn't help. this is coupled with:
  • playing three upfront
  • playing two wingers so wide they are difficult to get the ball to (refer to above comments on the midfield)
  • switches of direction which are slow and/or in the air (not over or through the defence)
  • only playing centrally when we break quickly and the winders aren't forward (it has happened on at least one occasion this season :p)
  • attempting to cross only once the opposition has had a chance to set their defence (compare this to the efforts against us)
  • a complete reluctance to shoot from outside the box (unless all other options have been fully exhausted)
. we just make things so simple for the opposition ... with too much space between our own players (or none at the other extreme) - the toothless attack mantra is actually very similar to last year (but we were often quicker to break last year)

That's not really what he said.

. i know that the defence is copping a lot of shit (and fair enough) ... but we need to look at the contributions from elsewhere on the pitch too

. the front four have given us very little (a lot of running from Roy and particularly Connor) have yielded very little. when Trent has been on - he has made some proper forward runs but gets even less service than Roy (not to blow smoke up his arse, but the goal tonight was well taken and shows what can be done with a ball over the defence

. the midfield are constantly outnumbered and when we make as many passes as we do ... some of them are going to go wrong - and especially with only one ball playing midfielder. when they do go wrong things very quickly turn to shit as we are so stretched

. these are the reasons the back four are always under pressure - they have no midfield options

Positives.....
While not perfect Izzo does look HAL standard now. He is not as good as Ready yet but he looks like a prospect this season.
Faty did quite well. Actually capable of controlling the ball, shielding it and passing it FORWARD. The other shower should watch the tape.
Trents goal was excellent.
Monty did well and kept them honest.

Negatives.....
McGing and Micky will not be Successful defenders within the next 5 seasons, if ever.
Rosebud and Powell are the elephants in the room. Both are very poor in their current positions.
Fab does not warrant a starting spot anymore.

We played quite well in tiny patches but the midfield is terrible and our defence is as clueless as it was last year.
The most simple question is.....how can you stop an opposition player scoring when you are on the wrong side of him.......it is impossible.
It's like trying to block a punch by putting your hand behind your head....try it.

. it is so frustrating:
  • recently McGing and Ascroft have been cutting out crosses that would have sailed through the middle last year ... which has been a welcome improvement
  • but so many goals are just coming from cheap turnovers ... and these seem to be increasing
  • again ... i blame the midfield more than the defence - the turnover from Powell that led to the third (i think it was) ... is just embarrassing. there is no way we should have lost possession and everybody was out of position because of it
. now the heat obviously knocked them about tonight (i know, i know both teams blah, blah, blah) ... but they were lacking in ambition and passion

. i don't often go in for bagging out 'my boys' but based on tonight's effort ... i swear if i had balls they'd be bigger than theirs

. now that i have all of that out of my system i might be able to sleep

Fabio literally did not make a forward facing run in the second half. Pain worked his arse off in the first 20 minutes making runs was ignored every single time by Neill and gave up. Galloway constantly looked to make a pass for Fabio but every god damn time Fabio jogged towards him asking for the ball with a Victory defender up his ass. This then forced Galloway to either pass back to Faty or go inside to Monty who had to try and play a perfect cross field ball to Pain under immense pressure.

I think Okons statements after the game were more a message to his players than his fans and personally I like it.

Get on board or get the f**k out, he is basically saying if you aren't good enough to play my system, then you're a fraud who will be found out, I can think of at least 3 players who should be nervous.

. i have been very unimpressed with fabio all season (and most of last actually)

. when he came back in fro Trent in round 3, or whatever it was, i was really impressed with the running (and defending) he did in the first 15mins

. tonight (oops last night) he made one great run before being brought down (that sort of foul really pisses me off)

. i had assumed that a three day turn around was deemed too much for Trent and he will start as the better option on NYE

This then forced Galloway to either pass back to Faty or go inside to Monty who had to try and play a perfect cross field ball to Pain under immense pressure.

. these cross field balls are another frustration of mine because they are not played into space. Pain has to wait for the ball, then control it ... then try to get past the defender or two that have now arrived

. oh ... and there is no bloody midfield there to support him / give him an option / make the opposition think their is an alternative to going down the line or turning around

Ive been reluctant to criticize the team till at least round 10 or so seeing all the changes pre season but where no better since TW got the boot we have become so pedestrian in our game our defence is so shit the the defensive mistakes have been horrendous and our passing has a lot to be desired .its been a long 18 months of shit football with no change in sight I'd sack the lot and start again

Paolo in the press “Look, at 2-0 we had a chance to make it 2-1, we don’t score the Victory go up the other end and score a training ground goal – then it becomes even more difficult,” Okon said. “I think we were good in the first half, we gave away the ball too much and allowed Victory to transition and we saw in the second half when we do that how they can punish you. “There’s always positives to take from a game and there’s always things you can work on, to be honest I don’t think it was a 4-1 game. I don’t remember Izzo having to make a save other than the shot in the first half. “I’ve said it all season but unfortunately we continue to do it, if we keep making basic mistakes, giving the ball away then defending we’re going to give away goals and we’re going to struggle to win football games, tonight that was the case. “We need to move forward, we’ve got a game on New Year’s Eve against Melbourne City – there’s a lot of belief and confidence in the group, we’re going to continue to play that type of football moving forward because if I’m in charge that’s the ony type of football that I know. “It’s not our playing style that’s the reason we’re conceding goals it’s mistakes and if you’re going to continue to make them, especially like teams with the quality of Melbourne Victory then they can put a few goals on you and that’s what happened tonight. “The players effort is phenomenal and that’s the minimum, the minimum is the effort. Unfortunately, when we make mistakes we get punished for it and that’s where we’re at the moment. “At the start it was about getting the team to play a certain way which I think we’re doing but now we need to continue to improve and along the way there’s going to be moments like tonight where we concede goals where we shouldn’t. “Trent’s an exciting young player, he’s got plenty of speed and he took his finish magnificently, I’m happy for the boy. It’s his first A-League goal, it would be nice for him if it won us a game or salvage a point but he’s certainly a player the club will look to in the future. “We have to be realistic where the club sits financially to other clubs but it’s about making sure the club has longevity and maybe that’s hurting us a bit at the moment but we certainly won’t feel sorry for ourselves. We’ve got a short turnaround, Melbourne City on Saturday so we’ll prepare for that as best as we can," Okon said. - See more at: http://www.ccmariners.com.au/articl...2brnm658mh81nm3d77nsdbwy#sthash.st5AK5G7.dpuf
