And while you're waiting for the match, you could go to the Museum of Australia and see the new exhibition of Johnny Warren's memorabilia. I believe his family have recently donated a lot of his footballing items to the museum.

Mariners boosted by key inclusions for Jets test

The Central Coast Mariners will face Hyundai A-League rivals the Newcastle Jets with their strongest line up of the pre-season at Canberra Stadium on Saturday, with key attacking options Andre Gumprecht and Nik Mrdja included for the first time this campaign.

Earlier this week, Gumprecht penned a new deal with the Mariners that will see the German-born midfield dynamo continue his career on the Central Coast for the Hyundai A-League 2008/09 season.

Having trained solidly with his team-mates throughout this week, Gumprecht is now set to contribute to the Mariners second Grand Final rematch of the pre-season.

Striker Mrdja, who has not contributed to a competitive fixture since appearing for the Qantas Socceroos against Argentina in Melbourne last September, will potentially make a cameo from the substitutes bench on Saturday.

Mrdjas recovery from his long-term knee injury has been advanced considerably in recent weeks, with the 29-year-old now capable of contributing a few minutes off the bench.

Fellow striker Dylan Macallister has shaken off a hamstring strain and is again available for selection after missing last Tuesdays 3-0 triumph over the Northern Tigers at Mills Park.

The news is not so good for captain Alex Wilkinson, who will miss Saturdays match with a knee injury that may yet sideline the Mariners most capped player for the beginning of the Pre-Season Cup.

Paul OGrady and Greg Owens will travel with the Mariners to Canberra, but will not take part in proceedings as they continue their rehabilitation from Achilles and hamstring concerns respectively.

Also absent for the Mariners will be Qantas Under 23s pair Nigel Boogaard and Matt Simon, who despite not being selected in Australias 18-man Beijing-bound squad, will continue to assist Graham Arnolds charges with their preparations as standby squad members.

"Were looking forward to going down to Canberra, we went down two weeks ago and that was a good trip," said Mariners Football Manager Lawrie McKinna.

"This Saturday will be a great preparation for playing the Wellington Phoenix in the Pre-Season Cup the week after, its as though were starting the Pre-Season Cup a week early and everyone is looking forward to it."

The Mariners and the Jets have played each other more times than any other two Hyundai A-League clubs since the dawn of the new era of Australian football, with Saturdays match marking the 18th occasion the two east coast rivals have met in all fixtures.

It is the Jets that are currently able to boast the better record in arguably the Hyundai A-Leagues fiercest rivalry the Novocastrians having defeated the Mariners on seven occasions and having suffered five losses, two of which were after extra time.

The Jets most famous triumph over the Mariners was their 2008 Hyundai A-League Grand Final success at the Sydney Football Stadium, a match that took place some five months before Saturdays upcoming meeting.

The Mariners will visit Canberra for the fourth time in their history on Saturday, having been to the ACT on three occasions in recent years.

Canberra has been a happy hunting ground previously for the yellow and navy, with the Mariners recording a 4-0 triumph over local heavyweights Belconnen United in June of last year, before returning one month later to defeat Sydney FC 3-0 at Canberra Stadium in their final 2007 Pre-Season Cup group match.

Most recently, the Mariners recorded a pair of wins over local opposition in the capital 2-1 against Belconnen United and 4-0 over representative selection the ACT Rockets in late June.

"Between now and the beginning of the Hyundai A-League season, our team will be vastly different and so will Newcastles, but well be going for the win," said McKinna.

"Both previous times weve played them theyve beat us 1-0, but for me and for the team, we want to win every game that we play and Saturdays game will be no different."

Mmmmm, I think they'll have a very hard time cracking our back line though which isn't a bad thing, and trusting to Hutch, Elrich, Caceres and Gumps I guess to do the job in the middle of the park... Sounds good, game on...

I think you will find that the Johnny Warren exhibition is not open yet. In fact my info is it could be up to two years before it is opened. The receiving of the family memorabilia (early May) is the start of the exhibition (but not the display) and then there is hope that the public will loan their own JW memorabilia to the exhibition. That has already happened with the public sending some items to be added to the exhibition. They are expecting more at the National Museum of Australia.

Museum receives Johnny Warren collection

16 MAY 2008
The National Museum of Australia has received a major donation of the Johnny Warren collection, almost 500 objects related to the life of the footballer, administrator, journalist and television personality.

The objects range from a 1953 under 12's trophy, through to the FIFA Centennial Order of Merit medal which was presented by FIFA President Sepp Blatter in 2004. It was the only medal awarded to an Australian, one of only 100 worldwide.

Other highlights include Johnny Warren's Soccerroo shirt worn in the match against East Germany in the 1974 World Cup and his Medal of the Order of Australia awarded in 2002.

Johnny Warren played 42 times for the Socceroos including the 1974 World Cup. For more than 30 years he became the face of football in Australia through his tireless commitment to the development of the game.

The Johnny Warren collection was donated to the National Museum by his brothers Geoff and Ross Warren, his nephew Jamie Warren, and his partner Sibere Rodrigues.

"Without the support of donors, the National Museum could not hope to fulfil its role at the pre-eminent institution devoted to Australia's history," said the Director of the National Museum of Australia, Craddock Morton.

"We intend to exhibit elements of the Johnny Warren collection in our permanent galleries in the near future and we are looking at opportunities to tour the collection around the country in coming years," said Mr Morton.

Once it is open I am sure there will be much fanfare regarding it and it will be a very interesting exhibition to view.

Yes, Danny can play until 29 August so he can play all the trial games and the first two A-League games against the Scum and Sydney FC. Bizarre huh.
