found this on the FFA website:

The Central Coast Mariners have inflicted Grand Final revenge on the Newcastle Jets today, winning a trial game 3-0 at Canberra Stadium.

Goals inside the first ten minutes to Mile Jedinak and Sasho Petrovski gave the Mariners the ideal start, and the Jets were unable to claw their way back into the game.

Jedinak headed home his second from an Ahmad Elrich corner ten minutes into the second half to complete the victory.

For the Jets, the game saw the return of reigning Hyundai A-League Player of the Year, Joel Griffiths, who was injected into the game in the second half. The game was Griffiths first in Jets colours in the 2008 Pre-Season, and should prove valuable match time with the Pre-Season Cup beginning next week.

In contrast, Joels brother, Adam, was a late exclusion from the game due to injury, and compounded the absence of key players, Jade North and James Holland. To replace Adam Griffiths, the Jets brought young Taylor Beaton from Canberra into the squad at the last moment. Beaton scored a brace for the Mariners against his club side, Belconnen United, a few weeks ago in his first taste at A-League level and was brought on for the Jets in the second half today.

In the previous trial game between the Jets and Mariners, the Jets came out 1-0 victors at Frank Millington Field, in Budgewoi on the NSW Central Coast, but todays result should add extra spice when the two clubs come together in Round 1 of the 2008/09 Hyundai A-League Season on Friday, 15 August, at EnergyAustralia Stadium.

TBH it's only a trial game, if we do the same again in Rd 1 I'll be impressed (and very drunk)

However, it gives us good confidence going into Rd 1, we're slowly getting our full strength squad together (and fit), and just goes to show how tight and exciting this league is!

Yes its only a trial, but ....  shows we can score goals and can't remember too many scored from corners. Also we did not concede, can anyone confirm the backline?

Mariners topple Jets in the capital

The Central Coast Mariners have scored a significant psychological victory over the Newcastle Jets at Canberra Stadium today, after clinically downing the reigning Hyundai A-League Champions 3-0 one month out from the season four opener between the two teams at EnergyAustralia Stadium.

Mile Jedinaks two goals either side of the break, coupled with Sasho Petrovskis early strike, saw the Mariners home by a comfortable margin over their northern rivals, who like the Mariners started the match with an experimental line up.

That said, the Mariners first eleven was perhaps their strongest of their nine-match pre-season trial match program to date, with Qantas Socceroo Jedinak headlining a starting side that also featured season three regulars Andrew Clark, Dean Heffernan, John Hutchinson and Petrovski.

Key new signings Adrian Caceres, Ahmad Elrich and Dylan Macallister were also featured from the opening whistle.

There were yet more positives to come in the second stanza, when recently re-signed pair Andre Gumprecht and Matthew Osman emerged from the bench along with Nik Mrdja and Danny Vukovic, who each made their first appearances ahead of the 2008/09 campaign.

With one pre-season trial match still to play, todays result will have given the Mariners regular season preparations a major boost, with the new Hyundai A-League season and the Mariners Premiership defence fast approaching.

"The two early goals set the tone of the game, the first half we dominated mostly, they had a bit of the ball but didnt do much with it and we created some good chances," said Mariners Football Manager Lawrie McKinna.

"The second half they changed their shape a little bit, but never really caused us any problems, but Im very happy with how the boys played."

The large Canberra Stadium turnout of 4,873 were barely settled into their seats before they witnessed the match opener, with Jedinak powering home Ahmad Elrichs delightful corner from the left side at the near post.

Indeed, the Mariners were still celebrating Jedinaks strike when Petrovski doubled the Mariners advantage less than one minute later.

Local product and youth international Bradley Porter supplied the Mariners season three Golden Boot winner with a delicate through ball that Petrovski duly dispatched past Jets custodian Ante Covic to hand the Mariners a hardly fathomable 2-0 advantage within five minutes.

The Mariners continued to dominate for the remainder of the half, with new look central defensive pairing Clark and Jedinak controlling proceedings at the back, assisted by wingbacks Porter and Dean Heffernan the latter of which produced his most assured and confident display since breaking his tibia last December.

In midfield, Elrich was dynamic and threatening at every turn and provided another inch perfect cross that was again nodded home by Jedinak within fifteen minutes of the restart.

On the opposite flank, Caceres showed signs of settling in with his new team-mates with a comfortable showing that lasted 60 minutes, while Hutchinson, standing in for regular captain Alex Wilkinson due to the incumbent skippers knee injury, built upon his outstanding pre-season form.

Up front, Macallister and Petrovskis partnership continued to prosper, a sobering thought for opposition defences given the pending return of Qantas Socceroo Mrdja and Qantas Under 23s squad member Matt Simon.

"We were a bit skinny on numbers for today, but Nik Mrdja came on and hell be better for the run, Matthew Osman came on with no problems at all, Heff got through 75 minutes and Caceres played an hour and each of them are getting stronger," said McKinna.

"Our possession was good, Hutch played great, Mile Jedinak did a good job at centre half, Brad Porter did a good job, Gumprecht came in and did a good job, so overall there were a lot of positives."

The Mariners will contest their final pre-season trial match before beginning their 2008 Pre-Season Cup campaign against the Beijing-bound New Zealand Under 23s at Knox Grammar School on Tuesday, 15 July. Kick off is at 3pm.

Following this match, the Mariners are bound for the New Zealand capital, where they will play the Wellington Phoenix in the opening round of the 2008 Pre-Season Cup at Westpac Stadium on Sunday, 20 July. Kick off is at 2pm AEST.

Central Coast Mariners 3 (Mile Jedinak 3, 61, Sasho Petrovski 4)
defeated
Newcastle Jets 0

A quick start was enough to knock the stuffing out of the Newcastle
Jets. Two nil down after less than five minutes were on the clock,
and worse still for those who were stranded, like the Newcastle
defence, on the outside of the stadium.

Jets coach, Gary van Egmond, didn't mince his words when he stated
that the players will need to take a look at themselves after this
game, such was the performance of a number of individuals. He left
with no excuses, lest to say that he was missing a few key players
and the side was quite young and inexperienced.

The game was delayed ten minutes for the late spectators to get
through the few gates that Canberra Stadium provided, and a number of
them would have been rather unhappy it wasn't held back further after
they missed the opening minutes of the game.

An inoccuous corner from the left by Ahmad Elrich was met, nearly
unopposed, by Mile Jedinak and his header found nothing but net. The
Mariners were ahead with only three minutes gone. But, worse was to
happen when the ball, allowed to bounce in the defence, found Sasho
Petrovski on the edge of the box. His low shot slid inside the far
post giving Jets custodian Ante Covic no chance.

Nobody really expected this start, and both sides then settled down.
The Jets were gaining some advantage in the attacking stakes, but
when the ball made it to the final quarter, the Mariners defence
easily accounted for each foray. Mariner's keeper, Andrew Redmayne,
only had one save to make during the whole half.

The Mariners could have extended their lead midway through the half
with two chances falling to new acquisition Dylan Macallister. His
first was a diving header that went just wide and Covic came out well
to smother the second.

Late in the half, the Jets should have pegged one back when Kaz
Patafta, spurning a chance for a shot, layed the ball off to Jason
Naidovski. His attempt was directed straight at Redmayne, this being
Newcastle's best opportunity for the period. The score was unchanged
at the break and Newcastle would need some soul-searching to alter it.

Controversial goalkeeper, Danny Vukovic, was introduced after the
break, yet for him the half saw little action. At the other end Covic
made way for Ben Kennedy. The Mariners also firmed up their midfield
with Andre Gumprecht entering.

Although Jason Hoffman shot over after some nice interplay on the
edge of the box, it was the Mariners who were to put the game away a
quarter of an hour into the second half.

In a mirror image of the first goal, a corner from the left by Elrich
was converted yet again by a Jedinak header. Van Egmond stated later
that his players should never have been muscled out by the solid
Jedinak on these plays. Perhaps if the tall Adam Griffiths had been
playing the situation would have been different, but these defenders
were not coping.

The introduction of Joel Griffiths with twenty minutes to go helped
spark the Jets to action. Involved as he normally is at the scoring
end, Griffiths saw a header from a Patafta corner, graze the crossbar
and then with only a few mintues left a pull back from Jin-Hyung Song
fell to Joel, but the snap shot went agonizingly wide.

There was one sour note for the Mariners before the termination of
the match. Bradley Porter collected his second caution, when trying
to halt the speedy Tarek Elrich. thus seeing him miss the opening
match of the PreSeason Cup.

Mariner's coach Lawrie McKinna was overall happy that his players
could play on a good surface leading into the preseason proper. "We
are very hopeful that we will have a good season." With the likes of
Simon, Wilkinson, Boogaard and O'Grady to return, McKinna stated that
"we should have good depth in the squad".

Van Egmond had few encouraging comments to make except that "I was
happy we could get ninety minutes against quality opposition on a
good pitch." More so, he was disappointed in the way his players
competed for the ball. "It is one thing being able to keep the ball
and another to win the 50-50 duels.

"The match has shown a couple of our players up, which is good at
this stage," added van Egmond. "It is good because a number of them
will get a kick up the backside. Fortunately, it gives us a good
month to prepare (for the season proper)."

Both coaches reevealed that they will continue on their recruiting
drives to fill some of the spots, yet probably more so with the Jets
as van Egmond stated "which is obvious from this display."
