The Mariners were very rusty last night. Superior fitness won it for them, as well as a 17-year-old triallist who played one half for both sides.

The Canberra Times has a couple of reports. The story that's not online reports McKinna saying his team were shit and he blasted them at half time.

D'Apuzza came on in the second half and lasted about 10 minutes before he was injured. The Canberra teenager, Taylor Beaton, then replaced him at left-back and scored twice. Looks like he's signing with your youth side. He's the bloke in the pic wearing a United kit, clashing with Nik Mrdja.

And what's with Mrdja playing as a centre-back?

Mariners tested but triumphant

Two goals from 17-year-old triallist Taylor Beaton have secured the Central Coast Mariners a hard fought 2-1 win over ACT Premier League heavyweights Belconnen United at the Belconnen Soccer Centre this evening.

With barely a starting eleven of contracted senior players available for selection, the Mariners were forced to wait until the final minute to secure their fourth win of their pre-season trial match program Canberran starlet Beaton delivering the telling blows against his current club.

Beaton, having played the first half with Belconnen, traded sky blue for yellow and navy in the second stanza and first drew the Mariners level shortly after the hour mark before netting the match winner with the final kick of the game.

Earlier, Dustin Wells had given Belconnen the advantage one that the home side, who currently sit second in the ACT Premier League, thoroughly deserved and held onto until the second half intervention from regular team-mate Beaton.

Most positively, midfield ace Matthew Osman completed his 15-minute cameo towards the end of the match without any complications in what was his first contribution to a competitive or non-competitive match since October 2007.

"From a fitness point-of-view, the boys worked hard enough, got ninety minutes under their belt, or in Heffernans case 45 minutes and from that point-of-view tonight was OK," said Mariners Football Manager Lawrie McKinna.

"Matthew Osman came on the last 15 minutes, had a few touches on the ball and looked quite confident and hell just build on that now and his contribution was very promising.

"Young Taylor came on for us in the second half after playing well for Belconnen in the first half and scored two goals so hes had a great evening."

It was the Mariners most experimental line up of the pre-season trial match program to date that made hard work of proceedings early on, if not for the stern challenge offered by Belconnen than because of the unfamiliar weather conditions that plummeted to 3 by kick off.

The visitors were dealt a blow at training yesterday, with Paul OGrady and Bradley Porter both ruled out of the fixture with slight injury concerns further depleting the Mariners already threadbare playing stocks.

Indeed, the only 2007/08 regulars to feature in the starting side for the yellow and navy were Andrew Clark, Dean Heffernan, John Hutchinson, Sasho Petrovski and Alex Wilkinson, all of whom, bar Heffernan, have featured prominently in the lead up to season four.

Former New Zealand Knights midfielder Wells slotted home the opener on 34 minutes and, in truth, it was no less than the home side deserved.

The Blue Devils were good value for their one-goal advantage and were equally deserving of their first half clean sheet, with the Mariners largely frustrated going forward and limited in their chances on goal.

In accordance with Football Manager McKinna introducing a further three triallists from the bench as the match wore on, in addition to Osmans late inclusion, the Mariners began to assert their authority to greater effect and were justifiably rewarded with two goals.

Standout Beaton produced two clinical finishes to make sure of the plaudits for the Mariners, who will stay in the capital for another two days culminating in a fixture against the ACT Rockets at the Deakin Football Centre.

Fridays match will pit the Mariners against the best players from of the ACT Premier League suggesting perhaps a tougher test than that of Belconnen United tonight and the message from the Mariners brains trust was a clear one.

"We do need to do better, its simple," said McKinna.

"Its only pre-season, but tonight wasnt good enough and I dont think any of the boys will feel too great about tonights performance."

The Mariners pre-season trial match program continues in the nations capital in two days time with a match against local representative outfit the ACT Rockets at the Deakin Football Centre on Friday, 27 June. Kick off is at 7pm.

Mariners Memberships for the Hyundai A-League 2008/09 season are now on sale at www.ccmariners.com.au.

I'd be very skeptical that it was Mrdja..
There are a few guys who look similar in the squad now.
They'd better play better tomorrow, I'm heading down today.

Tonights game ended 4-0 to the good guys ;)

From what I've been told couple of trialing players got goals (lob, le grand is what i'v been told but no certainty on those names) as well as Sasho and Osman.

Cant remember his name, but some young bloke scored a cracker, chipped the keeper with a perfect shot, but he hit it with pace.

Ossie's goal was great, ball was bouncing as 2 defenders came in to clear it, ossie stuck his foot out and chipped it over the 2 of them, ran at keeper and tapped at around him like 1 of Archie's goals in the GF.

Sasho was right on near post and smacked it at the keeper, went in off his legs.

Bloke in the pic at the top of the page scored an almost tap in after a corner at far post.

Interestingly, as some of the players went to celebrate with Ossie when he scored, half our players were having a verbal at the half way line. Hutcho was letting it rip at the lot of them, but Lobby copped it the worst.

Macallister is a machine. Simply beautiful to watch playing. He is the biggest man in the league, maybe only the og monster would come close, but he just never stops running (except when he went off and into the sheds with the physio, hope there is no injury concerns)

Goals Bojic 15, Lagana 39, Petrovski 45+1, Osman 73

Think this is an interesting paragraph:

"Next week we welcome Adrian Caceres and Mile Jedinak back and maybe Nigel Boogaard and Matt Simon and it will be nice to have a full training complement, but thats why its important for the boys who can play now to put on a good show because over the next few weeks we could have nine, ten or eleven more players available for selection."

Sounds like a great effort from the guys, especially with the amount of training they've been doing and the short time period between games. Must have been a great confidence booster for Osman as well.

By that last line ("....nine, ten or eleven more players available for selection.") Lawrie is indicating new signings and not just returns from injury.
