Mariners tame the Cougars in Rockhampton

The Central Coast Mariners have continued their encouraging pre-season form after Matt Simons hat-trick saw the visitors home 3-0 against Queensland State League outfit the Capricorn Cougars at Jardine Park in Rockhampton this evening.

The Qantas Under 23s striker was the star of the show for the Mariners, his goals enough to ensure that the Central Coast remain unbeaten ahead of their fourth Hyundai A-League campaign after three testing pre-season trial match fixtures.

As was hoped in the spirit of the yellow and navys pre-season preparations, the visitors were made to work hard in the humid central Queensland conditions throughout ninety minutes that will prove to be hugely beneficial to the Mariners Hyundai A-League 2008/09 season ambitions.

With the Mariners playing stocks being boosted ever so slowly, this convincing result against determined opposition is indeed the perfect supplement to the positive strides the club have made ahead of its fourth Hyundai A-League tilt.

"Tonight was good, we got three goals, the Cougars kept us on our toes the whole game and made us work very hard, but its always nice to score three goals," said Mariners Football Manager Lawrie McKinna.

"The performance was solid, I think Trotty had one save to make and quite easily we could have scored another five or six, but getting three goals, keeping a clean sheet, it was all very good, nobody got injured and there was a good crowd in attendance on a good night."

The less fancied Cougars, who sit in the bottom half of Queenslands top-tier state wide competition, showcased their desire to spring an upset from the opening whistle frustrating the Mariners and manufacturing several respectable chances of their own.

However, with 36 minutes on the clock, Simon was on the spot to finish one of the Mariners better attacking advances of the half, one that involved the increasingly impressive Ahmad Elrich and fellow newcomer Dylan Macallister.

In his first start of the Mariners pre-season trial match program, Simon was a standout for the Central Coast alongside fellow Olympic Games hopeful Nigel Boogaard, who aside from being typically dominant in defence came close to breaking the deadlock before Simons intervention.

Macallister so nearly doubled the visitors advantage just prior to halftime after another neat forward movement, only to be denied by regular team-mate and goalkeeper Andrew Redmayne, who completed the entire ninety minutes for the opposition.

Despite boasting only a slender advantage at the break, Football Manager McKinna would have been encouraged by several passages of clever passing that were very much reminiscent of the Mariners Premiership winning third season.

Bradley Porter and John Hutchinson largely dictated terms in the middle of the park, while Adam Kwasnik and Elrich were providing options in abundance on either flank.

Simon doubled his tally towards the end of the match after heading home a Kwasnik cross, before capping his memorable performance with a third from the penalty spot in stoppage time.

"It was a hot night, 28˚ today, a lot of the boys got ninety minutes in what was a high tempo game, we had a lot of the ball, kept moving the ball about, it was invaluable," said McKinna.

"Tomorrow we have a four hour bus trip, a light training run tomorrow night and then were back up for a game on Sunday, its going to be hard.

"The Whitsunday Miners will be exactly the same as here, theyll come at us 100 miles an hour, well have to be at our best, be professional, do things simple, wear them down a bit and go on with the game."

The Mariners will make one more stop in central Queensland before returning home when taking on Queensland State League challengers the Whitsunday Miners at Harrup Park on Sunday, 8 June. Kick off is at 6pm.

Upon the Mariners return to the Central Coast, the yellow and navy will take on northern rivals the Newcastle Jets in a Hyundai A-League Grand Final replay at Budgewois Frank Millington Field on Saturday, 21 June. Kick off is at 2.45pm and entry for all spectators is a gold coin.

I'm not sure if Hutch will be a definete starter tbh.

Lawrie has mentioned several times the need for a creative attacking midfielder, possibly marquee. If someone that fits that bill joins, someone in the midle of our midfield has to drop out and I think Jedinak is untouchable.

Report from Ben on CCM site.

Mariners impress with five in Mackay
Sunday, 8 June 2008

The Central Coast Mariners have completed their brief sojourn to central Queensland with a hard fought 5-0 trouncing of Queensland State League (QSL) club the Whitsunday Miners at a rain swept Harrup Park this evening.

Sasho Petrovski scored the only goal of the first half before John Hutchinsons strike and a hat-trick from Dylan Macallister in the second stanza rounded out a comfortable victory for the yellow and navy, who claimed the scalp of the Miners QSL rivals the Capricorn Cougars two days earlier.

The Mariners dominated from the outset and made light work of the howling winds and driving rain throughout controlling every facet of the match from minute one through to minute ninety.

The reigning Hyundai A-League Premiers have now won three of their four pre-season trial matches to date and have netted 13 goals in such time an encouraging start to a campaign that promises to be the Central Coasts most challenging and arduous yet.

"Especially after the game on Friday, we expected heavy legs, but the tempo was good," said Mariners Football Manager Lawrie McKinna.
"It was a high tempo performance from us, our boys played very well.
"The only thing disappointing about the first half was the lack of concentration sometimes because it was a wee bit easier, we just need to get into that mode that when we play, no matter who we play against, we play at full intensity.
"But overall, it was a good weekend with two good games, we made a few new friends and it was great to see a few people in the crowd with their Mariners scarves and jerseys."

Petrovskis inclusion from the beginning was one of three changes made by McKinna to the starting eleven that triumphed 3-0 in Rockhampton on Friday, with inaugural Mariners Youth Academy graduate Ian McAndrew and recently unveiled Youth Development Co-ordinator Damien Brown also handed starts.

Nigel Boogaard and Macallister were either rested or used from the bench due to minor injury concerns, while triallist David DApuzzo had returned to Sydney to play with APIA Leichhardt in the NSW Premier League.

Petrovski was indeed one of the Mariners more influential contributors early on, combining neatly up front with the in-form Matt Simon to manufacture a series of chances for the visitors.

Midfield flyer Ahmad Elrich showcased perhaps his best form of the Mariners pre-season trial match campaign throughout the opening stages consistently troubling the Miners defence with searching crosses and delicate one-touch passing on the fringes of the penalty area.

The second half saw the Mariners capitalise on their dominance with case after case of clinical finishing Macallister the most obvious example with three soundly taken goals, his third, fourth and fifth of the Central Coasts pre-season trial match campaign to date.

"Dylan scored one tap-in and two runaways and hes looking big and strong, but we had chances in abundance," said McKinna.

"The pitch was fantastic and very quick, the cricket wicket in the middle made it tough, but we coped with it very well. "We get back to the Central Coast tomorrow and start training again on Tuesday, we have a light week this week and then our next game is against the Jets at Budgewoi a week from Monday well be in really high intensity training.

"Weve got a few games coming up, which is good, because well have a few more boys coming back from injury in the next few weeks."

The Mariners depart for the Central Coast tomorrow and upon their return, will take on northern rivals the Newcastle Jets in a Hyundai A-League Grand Final replay at Budgewois Frank Millington Field on Saturday, 21 June. Kick off is at 2.45pm.

Okay just back into camp after tonights match.

CC Mariners 5 - Whitsunday Mantarays 0

A few hundred people at most as Mackay has had rain most of the day.

Starting line up of

              Trott
Clark  Wilko  McAndrew Brown
Elrich Hutcho Smitta Kwasie
        Sasho matty S

Couple of triallist on the bench along with Redmayne, Macca and Fergie

First half was controlled but still sloppy passing at times with both Sasho and Matty Simon getting caught offside. First half goal to Sasho at around the 30-35 minute mark from a header.

Second half saw Redmayne come on for trotty. About 50 minute mark hutcho scored from open play. About the hour malk Macca got his first past the keeper just inside the far post, second and third came at 75 and 85 minute mark both from runs round the keeper.  Fergie came on at the 75 minute mark ("show us your golf swing" got a laugh from him during his warm up)

Sasho was seen a couple of times back in midfield helping out which was good and him and Matty seemed to change sides of the park. Elrich was looking good. Neither of our keepers were really troubled.

Seems Lawrie has impressed a number of the locals by being in the dressing room of the local side earlier in the day talking to the young lads.

Overall not a bad display

How did Redmayne look??

Tall, short hair you would recognise him between the sticks. ;)

Seriously as I said neither of our Keepers were really troubled so from the performance he was an equal to trotty tonight although trotty had more to do. They were both quiet but generally the mantarays attacks were cleaned up well before the keepers were needed and the rest were taken easily on the chests of both keepers, it was good to have wilko organising the defence.
