I suspect the CSL is not the right place. K-League or J-League are fine, but while I think they're ahead of us, I suspect the CSL is not *that* big a step ahead.

Good for cash, not so much for development.

Have to agree - if he's not good enough for the K-League or J-League I'd rather he hone his skills in the A-League for another year or two than head to a team that is being massively outplayed in the top flight.

A view from of an ex-Eurosnob.

I think that the old days of automatic assumption of Asia being a crap career move are over. The sheer wealth over there suggests that there is plenty of talent in both squads and coaching staff. OK, some clubs may be as useful as a chocolate teapot, but others would be very good indeed. For example, would anyone say a move to Evergrande is a bad move?

Is sitting on the bench in the lower 'kick and run' leagues in the UK a better option? I've been to some of those, and I can tell you that some Asian competition would a million kilometres better in terms of technical and tactical ability.

Just because the clubs are a bit more hard to pronounce than 'United', 'City', etc. doesn't make the Asian clubs any less able.
mmmmm!!! chocolate!!!

I think there are a lot of factors that should be looked at when considering an o/s stint, be it China or anywhere else for that matter. As a footballer you are likley to generate at best a 15 year income for yourself, perhaps a few more if you are lucky. The flipside is that you get to keep a bench warm or even get injured to the point where your carrer is cut short and I am not so sure that insurance is going to be your nest egg in such an event. There realy is little secuirty for sa player so I can understand why a player might go for big bucks when the opportunity presents itself.

Not withstanding choosing a reasonable club off course.

I also think that Bernie knows his own ability and ultimate limitations, as would all footballers, do we really think he can make it in the top leagues of the world? if not then why not go for cash in China for as long as possible and come back to the A-league as someone is likley to resign him here

speaking of player movements, how many of last years starting 11 do we think we will retain for next year?

All except for the obvious ones like Matty, Pedj, Dutchie. I don't think Trent or Olly will leave this year. It's all rumours about Birnie.Nothing official yet.

Sincerely hope that Bernie goes to Shanghai as rumoured - then we might be able to sign or promote someone who can actually play. Poor first touch, ordinary finishing, average work rate, and absolutely ZERO football brain - tactically behind most 13-16 year lds playing Premier Youth League. If we get one cent in training compensation for him it should be considered a huge bonus.

We are fortunate to get as much compensation for Maty as what has been suggested ($180K plus a percentage of future transfer fee) because if he had another season going as much backwards as he did this year compared to 2011-12 nobody would want him. Brugge didn't require him to trial as they had seen enough of him. He was very fortunate to play behind possibly the best back four ever in the A League. Unfortunately his inability to gauge an angle (1st goal 2nd leg v Guangzhou??), his vukovic-like "deer caught in headlights" planting of his feet apart and his general positioning will have him found out at a higher level unless he has a GK coach who can rectify it. His shot-stopping has been top class - but he'll need to go forward in many other areas of his game to succeed.

Sainsbury - different proposition altogether - he will be at the centre of defence for Australia for a long time, once he is given his chance. I just hope he doesn't fall by the wayside and end up like Matthew Spiranovic who should've taken over Lucas Neill's spot by now had he not wasted a few seasons in the wilderness. Trent should be playing regular first team football at Basel or wherever he ends up - and should be in the squad for Brazil if we qualify.

Ollie will be missed - he has started to regain his form and his class has always been evident. Didn't quite live up to the promise he showed as a 16-17 year old but is good enough to play at a higher level.

Caceres, Morton, Griffiths and McDonald will all step up just as the players they are replacing did two years ago. Duke, Simon and McBreen would have to be the most annoying forward line to play against in the League (as well as being able to score goals). the way they press and defend from the front will take a lot of the pressure off the younger guys behind them.

Lost or looks like lost .. Matty Ryan, Pedj, Dutchie [retired], Trent, Mile [retired I think] .. six

Left ... Rose, Hutch, Nick, Macca, Bernie, weeMac, ..... five

Youth and other players from last season... Duke, Olly, Fitz, Caceres, Pasfield, Anderson, Morton, Neil & Griffiths...nine

New players signed or old returning ... Matty Simon

Rumour is Wilko will return..

Meaning we have room for a couple more players ... and backs and mids would IMO be the ones being chased and maybe a goal keeper ...

Arnie is also in the mix .... seems it's a matter of time before he moves along and he is grooming Moss to take over when he leaves ...

Also Hearfield and Oates gone, probably Pellers and Rojic not really replaced. If Bernie and Olly stay, which i hope they do, and Wilko comes back i still think we will need at least 6 players. Fowards are fine, we will need one if not 2 attacking mids, 2 central defenders, a keeper and a right back IMO.

Sometimes think i must be watching a different game...thought Bernie had an awesome season once he got used to playing in a changed position. He seemed to come back from his trial in Europe a different player and some of his runs got the whole stadium off their feet. Agreed he is not yet the finished article but would love him to stay with us for at least one more season. :)

What with Patrick being as slow as a bulk carrier, Ando as mobile as the Statue of Liberty, Rose being skinned by any decent winger, Monty unable to hit a barn door with his passing, Hutch with the turning circle of the Erina roundabout, Duke running around like a headless chook and McBreen having the accuracy of a scud missile I am surprised that we won anything!

I expect to see Wilko - though he may play as RB as he did in season one if Trent stays. If Trent goes I also expect one other Australian CB to come back from OS - expect to hear in the next 2 weeks. (No inside knowledge - just putting 2 and 2 together and getting 74:innocent: )

Also wouldn't be surprised to see Gallagher re-signed as CB backup. I also wouldn't mind bringing in another young striker (18-19) to groom for the following season given that Daniel and Mile (if still here) will be a year older.

In other news, Bernie to China apparently

http://www.heraldsun.com.au/sport/f...ese-super-league/story-fnibbuub-1226653257341

THE cashed-up resources of the Chinese Super League have lured Mariners striker Bernie Ibini, who has agreed to terms on a one-year deal with Shanghai SIPG that will earn him several times his $100k deal with the title winners.
Though the Mariners said last night that no deal had been finalised, Ibini expects to depart shortly for a medical - landing Central Coast a $600,000 windfall for a player entering the last year of his contract and able to exit for free a year hence.

Unabashed in his desire to play overseas, Ibini had trialled with Belgian side Club Brugge in January, and watched his close friend Mat Ryan depart on Monday to sign a deal with Brugge.

Instead of going to Europe, though, Ibini is poised to join a side deep in relegation trouble, having lost six of their first 11 games after winning promotion to the top tier last season, but hugely ambitious and prepared to invest heavily under former Chinese national coach Gao Hongbo.

Ibini's departure will bring to almost $4 million the money brought in to the Mariners from transfers in the past three years, as Asian clubs in particular have plundered the most consistently successful team in the A-League under Graham Arnold.

Matt Simon and Alex Wilkinson both moved to Korea, though Simon recently rejoined the Gosford club, while Rostyn Griffiths and now Ibini have left for China.

A trio of players have also moved to Europe in Mustafa Amini (Borussia Monchengladbach), Tom Rogic (Celtic) and Ryan, with lucrative sell-on clauses in some cases promising further income.

Pedj Bojic was also granted a release last week to seek a contract with Sydney FC, and Patrick Zwaanswijk retired after the club's exit from the Asian Champions League.

There could be further moves afoot, with Oliver Bozanic on the radar of at least two clubs in Korea, and continued uncertainty surrounding the future of coach Graham Arnold.

Nonetheless A-League chiefs insist they are not worried about the exodus of talent.

"We've had some high-class players enter the competition in the recent past but we shouldn't be surprised when some of our best homegrown talent want to test themselves elsewhere," FFA corporate affairs chief Kyle Patterson said last night.

"In fact we should rejoice in it, from the point of view that we're fully part of the football world and not some backwater.

"Certain markets are particularly lucrative, and the players have earned the right to see what those markets have to offer."

WOW ... $ 600, 000....

On my count we have only five first choice players left ... Hutch, Nick, Olly, weeMac & Rose.... and there are rumours about weeMac & Olly ... and Arnold as well... Hal 9 will be testing me thinks...

I think Lucas working with Clarky for a full preseason could only be a good thing, just depends on his attitude
