Jobe Wheelehouse? Harry Kewell? Lucas Neil? At least we can rule out Vinnie Grella!
I'd say no to all those. Harry would take the rest of the season to get fit enough, we're sorted for defenders and no-one tainted by the Jest please

Pasfield has re-signed for another year (you'd bank on him taking over for Maty when he goes to Brugge end of season)
and Jimmy Oates has been released. See below.
This just to free up a spot do you think?

CENTRAL Coast Mariners today signed an amicable agreement with defender James Oates (pictured above) to release the 21-year-old from the remainder of his current contract.
Oates was signed to a one-year professional deal with the Mariners last year, however suffered an unfortunate ankle injury just prior to the commencement of the current Hyundai A-League campaign.
The former Manly United player and Mariners Youth team captain continues to work determinedly on his rehabilitation, and is aiming to return to action in the New South Wales Premier League before earning another Hyundai A-League contract.
Central Coast Mariners have offered Oates full use of the Club’s facilities, as well as continued access to its medical department as he returns to full fitness. In addition, Oates has been offered an open invitation to train with the Club next Hyundai A-League pre-season.
Central Coast Mariners Head Coach, Graham Arnold, said: "James Oates is a young man with great character and determination. Before he injured his ankle in the pre-season he was among the fittest players in our squad. We are convinced James can make a return to the Hyundai A-League and will support him as best we can to help him achieve his goals."

Captain Lawrence Edward Grace ("Titus") Oates (17 March 1880 – 17 March 1912)[1] was an English Antarctic explorer, known for the manner of his death during the Terra Nova Expedition, when he walked from a tent into a blizzard, with the words "I am just going outside and may be some time."[2] His death is seen as an act of self-sacrifice when, aware his ill health was compromising his three companions' chances of survival, he chose certain death.[2][3]

Found this interesting line about Lucas Neil

"The 34-year-old central defender is understood to be open to the idea of playing in the A-League, on the proviso it is for a club contesting this year's AFC Champions League."

Would be handy next season but wouldn't want the cash spent where we already have young talent

Doesn't make a heap of sense for us while we have Patrick. Frankly, it makes less sense if Patrick retires either - I'd rather sign Anderson and save the money to pour into youth.

While I don't doubt the marketing value, the future for our club in football terms is signing and developing great kids, not being a pension fund for returning Socceroos.

If we drop Lucas in front of Anderson on the pecking order, we might lose the kid and that would be a terrible shame - he's got a big future in yellow.

Reasons it might make sense:
  • His stated willingness to come home if playing in AFC CL
  • We've got squad spaces opened up thanks to Oates' and Kwasnik's misfortune
  • Lucas has strong links to Manly Warringah (Mossy's old club)
  • It does solve one problem - fixture congestion; we can play Patrick and Sainsbury/Anderson for home fixtures, Lucas and Anderson/Sainsbury for away matches - at the very least the older man need not be doing the hard yards on travel
So if we got him for a short term deal, maybe it makes sense.

While I don't doubt the marketing value

. i do ... his personal media commitments may serve as a distraction and i can't see him increasing our crowd numbers

. his insistence on acl football suggests to me it is more about selling himself for another lucrative gig in asia ... but that could shoot everybody's feet. having the aussie captain at the back will draw attention ... but also draw a direct comparison to his cb partner

. based on current form (say) sainsbury would appear as much better value with a bigger future

Or staying more match fit for international duty

. but that would require him to actually be playing in the team he joined ... and since we are the only guaranteed starter at the moment i don't know if he'd be guaranteed a starting spot (which may sound more arrogant than it is)

we easily have 3 of the best cb's going so we don't technically gain a great deal from picking him up
that said if it's just for the end of season/ACL he'd provide a bit of quality depth which could make a difference. provided he slotted in quickly with enough match fitness to play that is

We have a player announcement tomorrow morning and we'll share the news around 7:00am so you can kick-off your week with a smile!

I suspect it is a new player - not a re-signing since Arnie said we would be looking at an injury replacement for Kwas. My left field prediction - Brad Inman on loan from Newcastle United.
