Is the glass half full or half empty.?

From the above two posts it was half full but to be honest I thought that was the worst game we`ve played since Arnie took over.

I realise that Perth are a spoiling team, I realise that the ref wasn`t that good & I realise that that dope that turns the sprinklers on is back. But,all things considered, we were awful for about 70 mins & only merginally better for the rest of the game.

Our first touch was abysmal & movement off the ball was terrible. At one stage Matty Ryan was pleading to his players to move.

Our shape did improve on last week & understandably the combinations down the flanks are gone with Weemac & Olly missing but we can`t use that as an excuse. It was only weeks ago that we were saying how good our depth is.

On a brighter note our next home game is against Sydney FC so I`m sure the crowd will come back
(if only to see Del Piero).

Sainsbury was HUGE. That breathtaking covering tackle in the second half on top of all the other good work in defence and attack. Simply brilliant effort.

Call him 'Junior Zwaanswijk'.

Happy with Monty. A good solid effort in only his second game.

McBreen must have been so tempted to go into the shed at the end, walk up to his younger forwards, grin and say: "THAT'S how to play striker lads!".

just wanted to point out how well hutch seems to be doing as captain. level headed, working heard, cooling down players and listening to the ref... watch all that go out the window in spewcastle next week!

so we beat perth 1-0, perth beat brisbane 1-0, brisbane beat melbourne 5-0... so does that mean we beat melbourne 7-0? :innocent:

It will be an arm wrestle; too early in the season for the football to flow.
Told ya; 4-2-3-1 v 4-2-3-1 equals 0. Without McGlinchey, and poss Bozanic, Arnie wasn't likely to switch to the midfield diamond.

Ryan - so good in the air that he can even give us a diving header! Little to do but mostly did it well - I liked the two fisted punched clearance. Don't know why he got involved in a push and shove - perhaps his head is getting a little swolled?
Bojic - pure Bojic in all its raw form: a great blocking tackle and the worst finish you are evr likely to see. Rarely got forward as Perth blocked the runs and no McGlinchey to open them up
Rose - did ok without sparkling; also missed support on the left - Bernie isn't Bozanic
Wilkinson, oops sorry, my bad LOL - Sainsbury - immaculate, intelligent and decisive. MoM by a country mile
Zwaanswijk - content to lead at the back; strong as ever but again why did he incur that silly yellow?
Montgomery - quietly effective. Reads the play well in defence - has the rare quality of an English player who wins the ball with strong but fair tackles. Doesn't go over the ball, doesn't dive in. Good temperament. Improves our defence.
Hutchinson - smooth operator; passes the ball calmly. having Monty alongside him helps. Unlucky with his right foor volley which hit Perth defender - Vuko was out of position
Sterjovski - typical performance; can frustrate as appears languid but has the skills to beat people and to keep the ball. Apart from first free kick did well from the dead ball.
Rogic - a frustrating afternoon. His brilliant close control is squeezed by weight of numbers crowding his space. The hard afternoon's work won't have hurt him
Bernie - his first touch was poor, gone was last year's ability to get past players. Worked hard and chased everything but we need more class from him
Duke - never got the service; he is a striker who needs delivery but it wasn't there. Has a great attitude. Another one who can only learn from a hard shift.
McBreen - super sub. One touch, one shot, one goal.

My MoM easily went to trent Sainsbury;
2 points McBreen because quite simply he was the match winner
1 point - Mat Ryan for that header

Ryan - oops; swollen not swolled.
Pellegrino, poor first first touch; almost good cross field ball to Bernie. Not much else.

I thought that was the worst game we`ve played since Arnie took over.

I've definitely seen worse, and we didn't get a point, let alone 3.
But yes, we can definitely do better. But one game at a time. One opponent at a time.
Perth are going to frustrate a lot of teams and take a fair few scalps this season I think.
As for now, unbeaten, and I'm sure we'll improve.
WE HAVE TO.
Derby coming!!

I'm sensing some general disappointment here but frankly I was very happy with the game - need to keep it in context...2nd game of the season playing a new style against a form team.
They showed they are quickly settling into the 4231 and shortly the choice as to whether to use it or the diamond will become purely tactical. At the moment it's a matter of practicing it while it's still early season.
Rose nearly didn't play through injury, Ibini still recovering and not at full strength or fitness and Sterj just back from a calf injury himself.
Pellers had a poor touch but otherwise showed potential and may be a great impact player.
No Glinch, Hearfield, Kwas or Olly on the field. Duke had a hard role to play at his stage of development and Rogic was heavily marked - both will improve and will have and will take opportunities in coming games.
And with all that, not even playing near our best, we beat Perth who are in form, are very physical and are as difficult a prospect as we're likely to see in game 2 whilst still dominating possession. This is CCM before they really kick into gear, not a team peaking but setting up a foundation for the season - truth is it looks very promising, so so much is lining up to fall into place. I haven't even mentioned the successes of the night either, Matty, Zwaany, Monty, Breeno and Sains...
I can only be pleased with the way things are developing, its clear what Arnie's season plans are and tonight suggested to me those plans are progressing. Think what might be achieved when this team actually peaks. Beat Perth and Brisbane (in preseason) in this, the infancy period of the plan, when playing at what, 60% of what they can/will be...
Look out for good times ahead I'm tipping

Watching two teams play fairly defensively indeed doesn't make for the most interesting game in the world. But as others have pointed out, we're at the start of the season and trying to get a new system going, that's fair enough.

In that light, I must say that I see a positive learning exercise from pretty much every player on there.
Sainsbury is coming along very well, especially compared to last year.
I'm not sure whether Rogic just isn't suited to the role that he played here or whether he's indeed trying to wort out how to cope with the additional attention, the way Arnie suggested, it'll be interesting to see what happens there.
Sterjovski's first free kick had me worried but he seemed to come good and looked handy enough for a man who was hurt... Certainly was a lot more positive to watch than against WSW.
Bojic..... Well.... He was Bojic... Definitely missing the service and room for those marauding runs up the edge. I never quite understood actually. Looking at the first half of last year especially... He managed some extraordinarily precise crosses sometimes, moving the ball up and across almost half a pitch, yet he can't hit an empty goal from the penalty area... Well... Not always anyway ;) Still, he seems dangerous enough to worry the defences, which is always a good thing.
Monty definitely looks a handy addition as well, I think. One of those, often, unnoticed, players that we seem to thrive on. Nothing spectacular in terms of ability but a very very strong part of the whole that makes up a team. Very happy to see that, hoping he'll continue like that.
Finally Pellers.... Defensive type play will NEVER be his force. Whether the ball hits his foot or his chest, he just doesn't seem to be able to avoid it flying off in an uncharted direction :(
However, I was positively surprised at his seeming handiness in the more aggressive role, when he came on. As I recall, he played in a similar position in that horrid ACL game last year... I would say that he was decidedly unremarkable, but unfortunately he was remarkably appalling. That seems to have changed I think. He did some decent work moving the ball and getting it to the right players... I think there might be hope yet :)

So all-in-all I actually think that was decent, considering it's the start :)

Oh and Hutch!? Sterling effort as Captain... Good to see... Let's see how he handles next week.

I came away from the game a little disappointed with the performance but delighted with the result. Even given the players either not avaiable or playing injured, the first half was pretty forgetable. If McBreen had not come on and 'made the difference' up front with both his movement (sadly lacking from all those upfront and attacking mid fielders) and his ability to win the ball in the air, I fear the second half may also have been rather forgetable. Once we got the goal we seemed to settle and play better as they started to panic and tried to lift the tempo of the game without much success. Our defence will take a lot of beating this year, but our attack needs a bit more flare.
Is it just me or are we playing the game slower this year ? We just seem to get into good positions only to slow the game down and play backwards rather than push on and try and 'make' goal scoring chances. we have some quick players but in my opinion we're not making the most of their abilities. This 'new' system certainly does not give us as many attacking options especially down the flanks and I don't think we have the indiviudal skills up front 'at the moment' to convert the chances into as many goals as we got last year.
I thought Pedj did more good than bad, If you watch the replay, the lead up work was excellent and Danny was in perfect position for a normal shot, the best option would have been to lob him as he was well off his line but Pedj is not a 'delicate touch' player, but yes he should have hit the target.
As regards Rogic it will be interesting to see how he goes from here as although being well marked he was very much exposed as a 'one footed' player and therefore too predictable. He also needs to add some variety to his game rather than taking on opponents too much. I do like a player taking on the opposition but when in trouble lay it off and look for a one/ two, at least sometimes ! I'm sure he has massive potential and only hope that Arnie and the backroom boys can bring out the best in him as the season progresses.
Sainbury MOM, possibly but if it had been nil all, we would rue his missed header when unmarked and 6 metres out, which in my opinion was a better chance than Pedj's.
If we can get past Newcastle without losing then we would have made a reasonable start to season and have a good platform to move forward. To me 'move' is the key word as when in possession we are just too static and reactive when attacking. Roll on next weekend for a trip up the F3

Ive been to louder golf games, no noise from supporters group. was really disapointed, but its been slowly going that way for a while now...
Must be hard for the team, when the 10k growd is so quiet.
More dissapointed about the crowd noise. We are pretty soft when it comes to songs, chants and tiffos. We have slowly gone backwards from season 3.

Very happy with the result and probably happier than most with the performance.

We played a new system and defensively they didn't look like scoring. As for out attack there are a number of factors that mean we are not at our best yet.

In the 4-4-2 diamond a lot of our thrust came from the Rose-Bozanic and Pedj/WeeMac combos. That understanding built over two years is not there. Combinations will develop with more game time. Tommy is getting clobbered in the middle and he is still unfit - he was really struggling after after 15 minutes. Let him play on the left as he did in our ACL wing. Move Sterj into the middle to support Duke and bring WeeMac in on the right.

With other options of Olly, Ibini, Kwas, McBreen and Troy I think the goals will come. The defensive base is there. We will be hard to beat and I'm happy to collect a few 1-0 wins until we gel offensively. I'm still expecting Duke to be a huge success this year but I think he needs an older head like Sterj or Macca supporting him.

I'd say that's a bit of a harsh assessment pal. We weren't as loud as we have been in the past but we were still half decent. The fact we were giving a few newer chants a run probably kept things a bit quieter for the first half or so.
Spoke to a guy after the game on facebook who was at the game and is actually a member of the squadron who was at pains to say we were pretty good in terms of active support. Things will only get better from here but there's much to be done.

yeah youre right, it is a bit of a harsh assesment, but that what you do on this forum with the team, players and staff, harshly, sometimes unfairly asses and discuss.

after sitting in bay 15 for 6 years (7 coming up)I can say it has dropped hugely. I have photos and vids from season past that clearly show this.

I just think it is harsh to critisize the team, but not be prepared to critisize our own input.

THe noise and display from the bowling club end hasnt been great since the old guard left town (which I am not a part of, im just a mariners member. anyone who says differently is simply lying.
