I don't know Offtheball, Weemac is a big player for us, and we nearly always manage to keep Smeltz quiet. But certainly better to have him out than in.

MAtching up against Perth i'd actually like to see a 442:

With same backline as last week:

------------ Monty ---
---Hearfield -------------Hutch
-------------- Rogic
------- Duke --------Mile/Bernie---

Or because you don't turn up the side falls apart and we lose 3-1 ... and it will be all your fault for not coming...

Hmmm.

Slightly better than last week but still ugly and uninspiring.

Our shape was much better but the movement was very poor again.

Ryan 8. Rock solid. Such a great sweeper.
Pedj 6. Good defensively tonight but didnt offer much in attack.
Rose 6. OK.
Dutchy 7. Pretty solid.
Tesco 8.5. Very good and my MOM. His covering tackle to save Hutcho's blushes was superb.
Sterj 6. Needs to work much harder and get into decent positions
Monty 7. Nothing flash but gave us a much more solid foundation. Combative and no nonsense. Propbably our quickest player to actually do something with the ball.
Hutcho 6.5 One crunching tackle was the only real highlight.
Rogic 6. Pretty poor. Needs to toughen up. Looked lazy.
Bernie 7. Tried hard and looked are most likely to score. Even defended well.
Duke 5. Invisible.
McBreen. 8. Great cameo and great finish. We looked much better once he came on. He gave us a spearhead.
Pelle. 7. Mixed effort but some improvement shown.

MOM
Sainsbury (Tesco) 3pts
2pts Ryan
1pt McBreen

We started to play Football after we scored but the first 70 we were ordinary.
Still it was an improvement.

Good tough win.

Thoughts.

Perth area physical side who play always to spoil, and nearly worked for them as they got away with far too much as they were ridiculously over indulged by a guilt ridden referee. They also played truly awful long ball today. They were lucky it was only one nil, it would not have been if the ref had not facilitated their tactics.

We played some decent football at times, but struggled (as did Roar last week) with the constant niggling and physicality.)

We are clearly better as a 442. We are admittedly, and expectedly, hard to break down as 4231, but we just don't cause enough problems.

McBreen was outstanding. And one more time, switching to 442 at that point clearly also helped.

Pedj, better game. Not his best, but certainly a good improvement on last week.

Ryan - class. This kid has it. Owned Heff and McGarry :eek:verhead:

Sainsbury, great game, GREAT ball.

Rose - still looking a bit tentative, but grew into the game.

Hutch & Dutch - good solid games alike. Both showed experience, though I don't like seeing Dutchy get unnecessary yellows - awful as Gillet was.

Monty, couple of poor moments, and his first instinct is to clear, but he was one of the reasons we weren't just over run by Perths physicality and had some good moments too.

Sterj - definitely not bad - but not particularly good either. I hope he will offer more in time.

Bernie, not a great game, though he battled hard first half, but Perth were an ugly awkward side to play against for him and he just never found his rhythm - but it's only his first game back.

Tommy - also struggled with being molested by Perth. Did ok, and he'll be a better player for it, but never allowed him to settle and become truly influential.

Duke, worked hard and was another reason Perth weren't able to just boss us off the park.

I'm proud of the boys in this regard - today was a tough match - the kind that winning seasons are built on.

McBreen - CLASS, Really was. Winning all his 50?50's, hitting his passes causing no end of problems, and scoring a great match winning goal. Incredible to win my MOM with only 30 mins on the park.
Also thanks for making sure 9K Mariners fans weren't going home thinking how boring "footabll is. He has helped preserved our gate for next match, while Ian Ferguson worked very hard to destroy it.

Two weeks in a row, and we have played defensive aggressive teams that it's very hard to produce exciting, quality, fluent football against.

Pellegrino, gee not going to win any fans with that awful touch he had early on, but then showed against a tiring defence just why Arnie might be thinking he has a part to play in yellow this year.

Anderson - got a touch  and it was a good header! :pirashoot:

Over 9K is a decent crowd.

All in all, not a great game, but a great win. Important to get points from our home games, build confidence, and get off to a good start in these short HAL seasons.

Not a great game but a good result. As mentioned before Perth came to niggle and frustrate and it worked for 70 minutes for them. All in all an ok start to the season, we will get better once the combo's come off and with Olly, Glinch,Kwas and Caceres to come back lots of options. 2 massive games coming up.
