MANLY NRL star Brett Stewart has pleaded not guilty to sex charges relating to a 17-year-old girl.

In a brief appearance in Manly Local Court today, his lawyer said Stewart "formally enters pleas of not guilty''.

The 24-year-old fullback is charged with sexual intercourse without consent and assault with an act of indecency on a 17-year-old girl about 8pm (AEDT) on March 6 at North Manly.

The alleged incident followed a team function at the Manly Wharf Hotel.

The matter was adjourned to the Downing Centre Local Court on May 26, with the magistrate continuing Stewart's bail and excusing him from appearing if he was legally represented.

The magistrate also continued for three months an interim apprehended violence order (AVO) issued by police in relation to the alleged victim.

Stewart arrived at the court just after 10am (AEST) in the company of his lawyer, the Daily Telegraph reported.

Two close friends also turned up to support of the player.

Well, someones got to support him, dont they, one of the friends said.

Stewart is due to return to the code in time to play against Wests Tigers at Brookvale Oval on Sunday, following a four-week suspension from the NRL from breaching its code of conduct regarding consumption of alcohol.

Since his temporary suspension, the Manly Sea Eagles have not won a game.

It was reported today that NRL boss David Gallop had offered to meet with Stewart to discuss his future with the code.

And another one.................

http://www.canberratimes.com.au/news/local/news/general/raiders-ban-star-for-drinkdrive-arrest/1484108.aspx

The Canberra Raiders are poised to dump Trevor Thurling after the 24-year-old forward wrote his new car off in an alleged drink-driving crash at Bondi yesterday. In another incident the National Rugby League can ill afford, Thurling has been charged with drink-driving after recording a blood alcohol reading of 0.1, twice the legal limit. The single-vehicle accident happened on Old South Head Road, Bondi, about 1.25am. Two passengers, a man and a woman, were admitted to hospital with head and neck injuries after the accident, which saw the new car leave a carriage way, hit a traffic sign, a stone wall and then stop on the road across two lanes of traffic.Thurling must appear at Waverley Local Court on May 5. The Raiders immediately stood him down from playing or training pending an investigation into the incident. The club's board will meet next week and could tear up Thurling's contract, which runs until the end of the 2010 season.Chief executive Don Furner said he was extremely disappointed with the incident, which happened just three days after Thurling injured an ankle against the North Queensland Cowboys, ruling him out for at least a month. Furner said Thurling's allegedly ''stupid'' actions were particularly disappointing considering the intense scrutiny the NRL had been under because of a string of alcohol-related incidents involving its players this year.

''You'd think they get enough warnings about this sort of thing,'' Furner said.

''I guess the main thing is no one was seriously injured, but the coaching staff and the club are very disappointed. For a start, because he broke the club's policy of not drinking whilst being out injured. ''I just can't believe that he was so stupid.''Manly duo Brett Stewart and Anthony Watmough, Sydney Roosters' Jake Friend, Willie Mason and Nate Myles, the Bulldogs' Jamal Idris, Ben Barba and Lee Te Maari, and Cronulla's Brett Seymour have all been disciplined for alcohol-related incidents this year.Raiders back-rower Joel Thompson will appear in the ACT Magistrates Court on June 3 for a court management hearing, following allegations he assaulted his girlfriend, Danielle O'Brien, after a night out in February.

A PREGNANT teenager was knocked over during a brawl involving more than 20 Bulldogs and South Sydney supporters at ANZ stadium last night.

The young woman collapsed when she became caught up in a fight between about 20 teenage fans just minutes after the game ended.

Wearing a Bulldogs jumper the 17-year-old victim collapsed and was left slumped up against a wall in the public concourse under the stadium's northern stand.

She was distressed and struggling to catch her breath as witnesses raised the alarm with security.

A friend was screaming: "She's pregnant for God's sake - will someone call an ambulance?"

By the time police arrived the brawling teenagers had scattered, and it was left to stadium security staff to care for the shaken victim.

Police have been forced to examine video footage of the brawl in a bid to identify those who started it.

The fight is the latest in a series of violent altercations involving Bulldogs supporters at the clubs Homebush home ground.

Paramedics treated the young woman at the scene.

A spokesman for the western area health service said the girl is 25 weeks pregnant, and was admitted to nearby hospital in a stable condition.

A spokesman for NSW police said they were unaware of the incident and that the police at the game were "cops for hire" paid for by NSW Rugby League.

An NRL spokesman last night said that they will collaborate with police to identify the initiators.

"If there's any issue with crowd behaviour we work with the police and the club to identify those people involved," he said.

"We will be looking to identify anyone who should be banned from matches."

The fight was witnessed by many families, including very young children.

One mother said she was disgusted by the violence.

"It's little wonder the Swans have a 48 percent base of female fans - the league has got to get serious about the safety of kids at these games,"she said.

"My kids could easily have been caught up in that mess, and apart from all the fighting the language was disgraceful," the woman said.

The brawling started as fans filed out of the stadium after the Bulldogs narrow victory over South Sydney.

Brawling outside the stadium, pregnant teenagers knocked to the ground...

Yep, smells like the family friendly NRL.

That said, while I'm not a Bulldogs fan, they are easy targets. Other clubs have similar issues that don't get half the coverage they do.

Totally understandable, I'm just reporting the news as I read it.  Just another incident to add to the list it would seem.

I'm sure the fact that the Bulldogs have a high proportion of Middle Eastern descent supporters has nothing to do with the reporting either.

Racism? Welcome to Sydney media.

Penrith NRL hooker Masada Iosefa has been charged with affray following a brawl outside a Sydney hotel.

Iosefa was one of two men arrested after a fight erupted between a group of men and security guards outside the Mean Fiddler Hotel in Rouse Hill on Saturday night.

Penrith chief executive Mick Leary said the 21-year-old hooker would defend charges of affray and failing to quit licensed premises.

Leary confirmed that Panthers star and NSW Origin hopeful Michael Jennings was also present at the incident but said the young centre was not taken into police custody as had been reported.

"I have spoken to both players this morning in relation to last night's incident and both have been extremely cooperative and are available and willing to assist police with their inquiries," he said in a statement on Sunday.

"The player, Masada Iosefa has subsequently been charged with affray and failing to quit licensed premises.

"Masada will be defending the charges.

"The club is treating the matter very seriously and is continuing inquiries. We respect the matter is now in the hands of the police and are unable to make any further comments.

"Regarding further action from the club we are not in a position at this stage to determine disciplinary action against Masada Iosefa. That will be determined at an appropriate time."

The NRL on Sunday said it was monitoring the situation and would wait on a report from the Panthers before commenting.

It is believed a number of Panthers players were at the hotel to celebrate Jennings' 21st birthday which is on Monday.

According to a police statement issued late Saturday night, a group of men were asked to leave a licensed premises on Windsor Road at Rouse Hill because of intoxication.

The group left but about 20 minutes they allegedly returned to the scene and a brawl erupted between the group and a number of security guards at the premises.

Police arrived while the altercation was occurring and arrested a 21-year-old Mt Druitt man.

A second man, a 21-year-old from Dharruk, allegedly attempted to flee the scene when approached by police but was subdued with capsicum spray.

Both men were arrested and taken to Castle Hill police station where they were charged.

Both have been bailed to appear at Hornsby Local Court on May 5.

Have a mate who drinks in the Fiddler, by all accounts its pretty hard NOT to get in a punch up there

So why go there if you are an NRL player - unless you wanna get into a punch up?

EX-NRL star Greg Bird has been found guilty of glassing his girlfriend Katie Milligan in the face and lying about it.

Magistrate Roger Clisdell today dismissed Bird's claims that there too many other possible scenarios to warrant a conviction of guilt, especially because Ms Milligan has never given a statement to police.

Instead, he said it was clear Bird was lying to cover his "guilty mind".

He convicted him of reckless wounding and making a false accusation afterward.

Bird, 24, had pleaded not guilty to assault occasioning actual bodily harm and to recklessly wounding Ms Milligan at his Cronulla apartment in Sydney's south in August 2008.

Police alleged Bird attempted to deceive them when he claimed his flatmate Brent Watson was responsible for his girlfriend's injuries. Bird had admitted a public mischief offence but  pleaded not guilty to making a false accusation to police.

Bird told the nurse Ms Milligan had injured herself, Mr Stanhope said.

Bird allegedly said "she's been drinking and she fell into the coffee table".

Police went to the hospital after being called by ambulance officers and Ms Milligan told them her flatmate, Brent Watson, had hit her with a glass at the Cronulla apartment after a night out.

But Mr Stanhope said Mr Watson had left for a game of golf before the alleged argument occurred in the early morning and had not gone out with Ms Milligan the previous evening. While playing golf, Mr Watson received text messages from Bird saying the couple had told police he was responsible for an accident at the apartment, the court was told.

Mr Stanhope said the text message read: "There was an accident, there's blood everywhere ... we have told police it was you. How do you feel about that?".

Mr Stanhope acknowledged the Crown case was based on circumstantial evidence and Ms Milligan had never given a formal statement to police.

Bird's barrister John Dailly SC said there were many possible scenarios to explain how Ms Milligan's injuries were sustained and there was no evidence to prove the circumstances surrounding them.

"The inability to provide any credible evidence ... highlights the complete lack of relevant evidence against the accused and that must ... sound the death bell for the prosecution," Ms Dailly said.

That story is very confusing, too many characters introduced.

I Get:
  • EX-NRL star Greg Bird
  • girlfriend Katie Milligan
  • flatmate Brent Watson
  • Bird's barrister John Dailly SC

... but then who the f**k is this "Mr. Stanhope"?
