DNA ... test results reportedly provide no evidence. Fasten Brader

Police DNA tests have returned no evidence to support a sexual assault charge against Manly full-back Brett Stewart
By Josh Massoud
March 12, 2009 Police DNA tests have returned no evidence to support a sexual assault charge against Manly full-back Brett Stewart.

The Daily Telegraph understands results of all major DNA samples taken in the aftermath of last Friday's alleged incident were returned to police this afternoon, with Stewart cleared by the tests.

Police have charged the Manly full-back with sexual assault of a 17-year-old girl.

The alleged victim also underwent DNA testing and the Daily Telegraph understands that her results have also turned up no supporting evidence.

Both Stewart's manager George Mimis and barrister Geoff Bellew refused to comment.

The police charge against the NRL player stands despite the reported test results.

Roosters hooker Jake Friend charged with drink driving

March 17, 2009 Sydney Roosters hooker Jake Friend has been charged with a high range drink driving offence and will appear in court next month.

The Roosters said in a statement that Friend will face the club's disciplinary committee later this week, but refused to comment any further on the matter.

The 19-year-old came off the bench and scored a try for the Roosters in their 52-12 loss to South Sydney on Sunday.

Despite the charges, Friend has been named in the Roosters' 18-man squad for this weekend's match with Canberra.

Roosters coach Brad Fittler has set a strict code of conduct for players since taking over in 2007, banning players from drinking alcohol every day except the day after games.

I suspect that the code doesnt encourage them to get blind on the day after games and drive (even next morning).

The stupidity of these people knows no bounds does it?

With all the publicity recently, you would think it would have penetrated even the densest player - obviously not

Baptised at the bar: baby Bunny's father lashes out

Greg Prichard | March 18, 2009

THE father of a boy who plays for one of South Sydney's junior representative sides in the Harold Matthews Cup for under-16s has expressed alarm at references to all-night drinking in the team's victory song.

The song refers to the players being "all round the bar", says later it is time to "throw the empties away, start again - start again", and closes by declaring "we'll sing till the dawn breaks again and may the sessions of South Sydney last forever".

The parent, who did not wish to be identified, fearing a backlash against his son, was concerned drinking was being glorified.

"Team songs like this have passed their use-by date. My son doesn't feel comfortable singing it and I know a couple of his mates in the team feel the same. It just makes people in the game look like boofheads. I know songs like this have been around forever in football clubs, but that doesn't make it right for under-age kids to sing them."

Souths' junior rep teams are controlled by the South Sydney District Junior Rugby Football League. The Herald contacted the team's coach, Robert Capizzi, but he said he did not wish to comment unless permitted to by the operations manager, Tom Larkin. Mr Larkin refused permission and said he did not feel it was his place to comment, either. Mr Larkin directed the Herald to Souths Juniors president, Keith McCraw, who, when told of the parent's concerns, said: "Why did they ring you and not me? Tell them to contact us."

The only official to comment, the chief executive, Rod Gorman, said: "I can probably understand their concerns, but we don't encourage the boys to drink, and there is never any alcohol in the room I'll speak to the chairman and see whether we need to reconsider on the matter of the song."

SOUTH SYDNEY UNDER 16 VICTORY SONG

Now that we're all round the bar

And the captain's declared it a quorum

We're singing through the night

We're having the time of our lives

Throw the empties away, start again - start again

For the boys of South Sydney are together

And we'll sing till the dawn breaks again

And may the sessions of South Sydney last forever

Up the Rabbitohs

No womder we're seeing so many of them in the news for drunken shenanigans!

tbf I don't get paid thousands of dollars to play a suburban sport marketed as a national game, broadcast to 3 states, and as a role model for kids, go out and get trashed.

I go out and get trashed everynow and then, or in the comfort of my own home.

Sym I too have behaved like an absolute prick at times, particularly after a few sherbets.

But misbehaving to the point where sexual assault is alleged? I don't think so......

Belting, or wanting to belt, someone who is a key player in the place I work for, after I had allegedly insulted him with disparaging comments about his daughter? I don't think so.......

Now I have done some stupid things while out on the drink. I have had to be spoken to by security at some places, but once I realised I was getting out of line - I WENT HOME, QUIETLY.

I don't drink and drive after I lost a relative who thought he could handle that and ended up killing himself, and I certainly don't go around to my next door neighbour and hassle their teenage daughter for a root when I do get home.

Most folks live fast when young, that's accepted in today's society. Unfortunately some don't make it through those times into later life as they sometimes crash the car or find some other way to get themselves killed living too fast.

But with these NRL players, there seems to be a lot of this adverse publicity coming forth. Some could argue that it was always like that, but the media hushed things up. I would say that might have been to some extent, but the behaviour wasn't as outrageous as now, and not as frequent.

I have heard of pubs and nightclubs that strictly ban NRL players from their premises, no ifs or buts.

The high frequency of these incidents is getting out of hand with what we witness with the same age group of people in any other section of society. To say it's only a  minority is true to some point, but there's a lot of misbehaving going on from this minority, isn't there?

I suggested a few pages back that it may well be worth someone trying to find out why this is occurring. I added my suspicions about drugs and performance enhancing substances being behind some of the outrageous or aggressive behaviour that has been reported, as the evidence seems to shoe horn in with the expected symptoms of abuse of substances, particularly about aggressive behaviour and lack of inhibition.

More good news for the knuckledraggers:

http://www.livenews.com.au/Articles/2009/03/25/Roosters_sponsors_put_players_on_notice

The Sydney Roosters entire playing squad and coaching staff have been put on notice by the club's major sponsors, with a meeting today reminding the squad of the impact negative incidents and headlines have on their business.

Major Roosters sponsor Samsung and beverage rights holder Tooheys took the pro-active measure, addressing the 31-man playing squad and coaching staff in a bid to head off any controversial incidents that could further tarnish the club's reputation.

The sponsors gave a 45 minute presentation, outlining how off-field incidents involving NRL players can have a detrimental effect on their business.

Samsung are more concerned with what (the Roosters) stand for and present to the community as a club rather than getting media exposure," Samsung corporate marketing head Lambro Skropidis told News Limited.

"We want to stand for quality, excellence and reliability and we need to be associated with a brand like the Roosters that can deliver this. said Mr Skropidis.

If the game represents the right values the corporate support will follow, he said.

The moves comes a week after Roosters hooker Jake Friend copped a $10,000 fine from the club following a high-range drink-driving incident.

A number of high-profile rugby league sponsors have contacted NRL chief David Gallop in recent weeks to express concern at the volume of alcohol-related incidents involving NRL stars
