Covic will stay for next season, I'm sure. Just not how long.

Ah, good luck to him then, regardless of whether I think he's a wanker or not, talented player, even I can admit it. Hopefully he won't burn out.

Yeah Covic's contract ends this time next year.

The Japanese wont know wat hit them

Really don't understand how it got to this after locating the National Disciplinary Regulations
http://www.footballaustralia.com.au/site/_content/document/00000361-source.pdf

Is he charged with R2 - pushing, striking, kicking, head-butting & elbowing?

I eliminated 4 of these leaving striking.  Striking is ambiguous compared to the other 4 listed and depending on the dictionary used the results would vary.  If is not written clearly, then the basis of striking is dependant on the life experiences and education of the people chosen for the judiciary.

Wikipedia ref: Strike may refer to a physical confrontation or removal, including:

    * Strike (attack), attack with an inanimate object or a part of the human body intended to cause harm

Just wondering is there more information, a definition of striking etc other than what I found or is this what they are basing the whole thing on.

Oxford Dictionary defines strike as:

"1. Hit, 2.Attack Suddenly, 3. Produce by pressing or stamping something."

Ron - you're scraping the barrel methinks.

There's also a thing called 'spirit of the game'.

You simply do not touch the referee in an aggressive manner.

Everybody I know - referees included - believe that Miligan should've been sent off in Sydney's semi for poking Shield in the chest, yet strictly speaking, was it violent?

No, but in the spirit of the game it deserves to be sent off because the referees cannot be manhandled.  And it can be interpreted as violent (even though it may not normally be).

Anyway, even 'striking' is open to varying definitions.  Dictionary.com suggests that any impact can be considered striking:

Dictionary.com Unabridged (v 1.1) - Cite This Source - Share This
strike      /straɪk/ Pronunciation Key - Show Spelled Pronunciation[strahyk] Pronunciation Key - Show IPA Pronunciation verb, struck or (Obsolete) strook; struck or, esp. for 3134, stricken or (Obsolete) strook; striking; noun, adjective
verb (used with object)
1. to deal a blow or stroke to (a person or thing), as with the fist, a weapon, or a hammer; hit.
2. to inflict, deliver, or deal (a blow, stroke, attack, etc.).
3. to drive so as to cause impact: to strike the hands together.

If you're trying to argue that Danny didn't deserve to be sent off on the grounds of what he did then you're probably the only person in Australia who thinks that.

The problem we all have (at least, from my understanding) is
-the inconsistency with the FFA and the griffiths strike and milligan poke
-the inconsistency with Shield with failing to send off milligan in the previous match for what many consider was a more aggressive form of contact
-the heaviness of the sentence compared to overseas incidents.

Although I don't think the latter is a good point - For one, some of the overseas incidents that got 5-6 weeks should've had the suspensions measured in years, not weeks.  What happens in another country is irrelevant to here, and they're the ones at fault for a ridiculously lenient sentence.  Two, we've got a written policy on how to deal with incidents involving Danny.  Three, we should be counting our blessings - we're damn fortunate that he's not spending the full 12 months on the sideline, so they've already gone easy on Danny (Again, referring to their policy).

Maybe there's more to play out after all.

To be honest, I think we all need to move on but you never know I guess.

The Central Coast has employed high-profile Sydney QC Alan Sullivan to take up the fight against Danny Vukovic's nine-month ban for manhandling referee Mark Shield in the Hyundai A-League grand final.

But the Mariners have expressed fears the Olyroos gloveman may not have the mental strength to go through another exhausting legal process after his original appeals case a week ago only resulted in a short sentence reduction.

Vukovic's legal team has until Thursday to decide whether to take one last attempt at freeing the keeper, whose spot in Australia's 2008 Olympics Games team hinges on the outcome.

"We'll be going over the (original appeal) judgment in fine detail and we've got to make a decision on Danny by Thursday," Mariners chairman Lyall Gorman confirmed on Monday.

"I've asked his manager, Leo Karis, to speak to Danny to make sure he's got the personal strength to go through it again."

"It's a very draining process and I know he's found the last couple of weeks very challenging from an emotional point of view."

"Whether Danny wants to proceed or not (remains to be seen) but if all those eggs fall into line we'll lodge an appeal."

Gorman is not expecting Football Federation Australia's appeals committee to exonerate Vukovic completely.

But he has called for some perspective and understanding.

"While we'd never condone the actions - it was a bad error of judgement on Danny's behalf - we'd like to think we can get some relativity into this, so people understand what stripping an Olympic career from someone means," Gorman said.

"Also, we lose a goalkeeper for about 15 games of the A-league and if we bring somebody in it's going to cost us 50, 70, 100,000 dollars to do so."

"There is a domino impost on the club for a start."

"There's a lot that flows out of decision of this sort."

Sullivan is regarded as an expert in sports law and has served as the NRL's judiciary chairman and also as a players' representative.

He believes Vukovic is a reasonable chance of having his sentence further reduced.

Agree, but the fact that the FFA has swept every previous incident under the carpet makes it look like they've been too scared to implement their own "policy" because "12mths to life" seemed too harsh a sentence for some of these (relatively) minor incidents.

Ironically, it may have been their own inactions (and even our own protests) that have contributed to now being the time for them to make a stand.

If they implemented their "policy" from the first incident, everyone would have known where they stand and I doubt we would have so many previous cases to feel so ripped-off about.

. with my tin foil hat back on ..... perhaps now that milligan is (reportedly) leaving sydney, they will put him to the judiciary and hand him a 12 month FIFA sanctioned ban

Yeah I agree completely.

If they want to take a stand and say 'enough is enough', then do it at the start of a season, NOT the end.

Well, seeing as they already let the first few guys off, their other option would have been to hand Danny the recommended ban, hear his appeal and then reduce his suspension. Make a statement in the press that Danny's penalty was reduced after consideration for extreme circumstances, and will not be the norm from now on.

I expect the severity of the original ban would still have a similar "deterrent" effect and get their PR mesage accross that they won't tolerate striking of officials ......from now on.

This sounds like I just want Danny to be let off and start enforcing the sentence from the next time, but really they should have been enforcing it from the start. I'm sure if any of the last 3 or 4 players to do something similar got an equivalent suspension, there wouldn't be a need for the FFA's "enough is enough" stance. And it wouldn't seem as unfair to be picking out one player who has done nothing worse than what several other players have gotten away with recently.
