If Joel Griffiths had any decency at all, knowing his previous action before the FFA's inconsistency (and he himself admits he was lucky) was central to the furore, he would have declined to accept the Johnny Warren Medal.

Whilst I admire the sentiments, a public appeal or petition will end up being fruitless or, as they say, as useful as an ashtray on a motorbike.

There is still hope that Danny will go to Beijing, but Matthew Trott will be in goals for us come the June trials, presumably with Monsieur Redmayne as his back-up. A serious challenge for Messrs McKinna, Tobin and Crawley, with JC having a major role to play.

I'd like to say this: on the way back to Sydney last night with Brett, we were discussing the massive double standards in the Griffiths-Vukovic incidents, plus other things that had happened to the Mariners in V3. There is NO WAY that we got the "rub of the green" in V3. I know that this is a cricket saying, but it seems apt here.

If you look at all the 50-50 calls this year that went against us, PLUS some that were NOT 50-50 (Griffo-Vuko, the GF Handball, Aloisi's imaginary offside in the first semi at NISC, etc), we had dreadful luck, almost unimaginable.

I sincerely hope that we have a great 2008/09 season, coupled with fair refereeing and some good results with 50-50 calls.

Now, if we could only get on 2% of the A-League marketing campaigns, and were allowed to throw streamers,..............YEAH, AS IF!!!!!!

I would love to hear the reasons why they shortened his sentence.
Must have been really noteworthy because otherwise why bother taking off probabtionary sentence.
They have lost it at the FFA
We need a royal commission,
No way the FFA could run a world cup

I agree, I personally dont believe Australia is ready to host a World Cup if the football federation isnt up to scratch

Speaking of banning streamers and drums... God help them when we hold the FIFA World Cup Finals in 2018.

No confetti during the trophy presentation either... blame the cleaning bill.

Agree with those comments there Auburn, felt we were hard done by a lot of times. Danny's first send off could have been a yellow, and then who knows how THAT game would have ended. There's a heap of examples if you go through a number of games.

I'd like to think that there's nothing more than a combination of bad luck & inconsistent refereeing. But if it keeps happening this coming season you will have to look at how we are playing the game, or asking the big question about whether someone wants the club to lose.

As for 2% of the A-League marketing campaigns, let's make sure they don't use the Marinators' name in vain (or at all) or take our goodwill for granted by having them use the name and image of the Marinators, with no payment. Any goodwill we've had with the FFA has been tested tonight for sure, and over the past month or so.

90 minutes, 90 assholes.

Just shattered for him.

Agree that any civil action would be bound to fail and its time to move on.

So looking forward to Shields next visit to Bluetongue. Surely some sort of protest can be organised that will humiliate this c**t and demonstrate our hate??

Run a WC?? Your avin a larf

NOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!
Fox has it out now that Danny is ruled out for the olympics aswell.
He has to appeal now surely, though it seems like Floss said,
they are clearly making an example of Danny. It's a cruel way to make their point, and a burden too harsh I feel for want that it should have been shared by Milligan the poker, and Griffith's the sack whacker. All reasonable people know both instances were worse, and over punishing Danny is a loss to all Australian football.

Making an example of CCM more likely.

If that's the case then I'm not being quiet even if others may think it fruitless.  Too severe a punishment for someone so young to bear.

Hope family & friends keeping close loving eye on him.

Public opinion - 100's of fans keeping vigil - demonstrating stand of FFA.  Doesn't look good for a world cup if there is discent amongst the ranks.  Franks money might be powerful but so to is the power of the masses.  World headlines as fans unite behind a player who deserves to go to the Olympics.

Someone please post the address of FFA headquarters if another appeal to done.

Ta.

My tears of joy are now one of deep sorrow for such a wonderful young man.

Not great to hear as I honsetly thought the banned part would be reduced by a month or 2 atleast, especially in light of the previous circumstances with JG & MM. Would be good to hear the reasoning behind the decision to reduce the suspended part of the sentence but... alas.... FFA are untouchable and answer to no-one, so don't go holding your breath waiting!!!

Also, slightly off topic but still related... can anyone shed some light on the disciplinary action FFA have taken against Mark Shields (if any at all)??? If players are held accountable for what they do... surely referees must be too, or is that also a "behind closed doors" thing for the FFA too. As stated in other threads.... if all other codes e.g:AFL, League and Union all have accountability for refereeing, why the hell can't the FFA??

Well I'm saying good bye to Foxtel at home.  Having read that Fox Sport supports the severe ban placed on Danny Vukovic.  f**kem, I'm not giving them my hard earned money.  No more Foxtel you bastards.

The big factor in the Milligan / Griffiths / Danny comparisons is the Grand Final.

You'd be surprised how many non-regulars saw the Danny incident and support a hefty suspension, until you mention the other 2 guys getting away with worse (and that one of them went on to be promoted as the League's golden child). Typical response is "I never saw that, I only watched the Grand Final"

You've gotta be 'avin a larf there.

Nice sentiment, and probably applicable to anyone else. But think who we're talking about here!

The actual media release:

"FFA MEDIA STATEMENT
4 March 2008

OUTCOME OF INDEPENDENT DISCIPLINARY COMMITTEE HEARING

Football Federation Australia (FFA) tonight announced the decision of
the independent Disciplinary Committee hearing following the appeal by
Danny Vukovic (Central Coast Mariners) against a 15 months suspension.

The Committee - comprised of John Marshall SC, Dominic Villa (barrister)
and former Socceroo, David Ratcliffe - agreed to reduce the period of the
suspension to 12 months, of which nine months will be served with the
remaining three months suspended on a probationary basis.

Vukovic appealed against the suspension received on 25 February
following a red card (send off) offence against the match official at
the Hyundai A-League 2008 Grand Final on 24 February.

In effect, this means that Vukovic will not be eligible to play in the
Hyundai A-League competition again until 24 November 2008.
If Vukovic re-offends in the 12 month period after 24 November 2008, he will be
required to serve the remaining three months of his 12 month suspension
(in addition to any new sanction).

Vukovic has a further right of appeal to the FFA Appeals Committee, with
seven days in which to lodge the appeal.

2GO is reporting the same news now as well.

Does that mean it's a FIFA ban and he can't play for another club?
If he can play elsewhere we've lost him IMO.

From A-League web site:

"Vukovic gets ban reduction
Wednesday, 5 March 2008

Central Coast goalkeeper Danny Vukovic's Olympic Games position remains in grave doubt despite his suspension for manhandling referee Mark Shield in the Hyundai A-League grand final being reduced.

After a marathon seven-hour meeting on Tuesday night, a Football Federation Australia disciplinary committee cut the keeper's ban from 15 months to 12, of which nine will be served with the three remaining three months suspended on a probationary basis.

Vukovic will not be eligible to play again until November 24, 2008.

With FIFA likely to ratify the suspension, the Mariners gloveman will be ruled out of the Beijing Olympics.

The Central Coast has seven days in which to enter another appeal process.

"Obviously Danny is incredibly disappointed. He is quite shattered," Central Coast chairman Lyall Gorman said after the hearing.

"We never condoned what Danny did in the grand final but we will stand by him."

"We put up the best defence we could - it focused on Danny as a person and his contribution to the game."

"We've got to live with it and move forward."

"He's never denied his guilt from day one. He's shown contrition and remorse
ever since."

"If any of you was asked to miss an Olympic Games you'd find it difficult and Danny is no different - he's human."

The hearing lasted until midnight, with Vukovic calling three character witnesses, including NSW ALP powerbroker and Central Coast MP John Della Bosca.

Gorman, former Australian youth coach Ange Postecoglou and Mariners coach Lawrie McKinna also spoke on the goalkeeper's behalf.

With the Vukovic case running longer than expected, the FFA postponed its case against Central Coast striker Sasho Petrovski, who is accused of using an abusive gesture against a match official during the grand final."
