I gotta say I disagree that we've been successful in the past with the long ball tactics and such - the single best period of play I have ever seen us engage in was for a 20 minute period against Sydney in Round 1 of Version 3.   There was the occasional chip, but never a 'hoof and hope'.  Every pass had purpose, every player was moving off the ball, there was a lot of one touch and balls into space, etc. and so forth.

Aside from Tommy, Jedi, and Sasho no longer being here and Gumps not starting, is there really that much difference in personnel between that night and last night that we can't engage in the same thing??   (some, me amongst them, although I'm trying to meet the "we're great" arguers halfway here, will argue that yes indeed, the losses of Tommy and Jedi were that important)

Why can't we play like that a lot more??    We _embarassed_ Sydney in that first half, and not only was it easy on the eye, but it was SMART football.   We found gaps with consumate ease, we played with width, and we played with pace.  Not to mention, it was POURING rain.

We all know that we've done it before - what's to stop us from doing it again??

Lawrie??

So the coach is exactly the same...the team is a bit different...but what's changed is the coach. Love the logic.

Maybe it's that until January 1, 2009 we had been dominating teams and playing quite well for 20, 30, 45 minutes here and there, just as before, and then Jedi left and we came up against a Qld, Victory and Adelaide that had improved big time since V3 and were simply superior to us without Mile Jedinak.

Jaypee,

He does have a decent first touch but he just doesn't achieve anything.  Even bullocking fullbacks like Heff and Pedj create more openings when they drive forward.

Technically very proficient but maybe he just lacks confidence to take players on and attack goal.

Maybe he is playing in the wrong position??? He excelled the season before at RB and perhaps he and Porter should have swapped - many including myself called this out all season....

Wasnt it blindingly obvious on Weds (well to me at least) that Porter is maturing into a quality player who looks to feel v comfortable at this level.

RM or in front of Huke would allow his ability to pass to be used to best advantage.

I'd be very interested to see him in the number 10 role.

              danny
clark?  wilko  boogs    pedj
              huke
kwas        porter          heff
      matty          nik

Most obviously, Porter seems to have a nice right peg for set pieces. He might do better at the whole not pinging the ball either miles over everyone or into the first defender thing.

Not even at local level!!!

iv seen him play that position for lightning before, not for whole games, but at times

iv also seen him taking awesome free kicks before. Wish others in the team let him step up sometimes

It would be a shame to undo his progress at right back, but he should eventually move to midfield. His passing range is too good not to. His best spot might be centre mid next to Huke, so he can sprays passes all over and push forward, but not to the extent of a Mitch Nichols. That would be perfect in the champions league where I think we should be mostly attacking up the flanks.

Agree - Porter is and has developed into another find for CCM

My comments about Ossie in that spot wasn't a shot at Porter - I think he has been fantastic and I am happy with him there however like other I feel Porters real position is in the midfield...

Given he played an entire season in this role for CCL nothwithstanding?
Not according to John he did not.. Wide on the right..Up and down the chalk..

Because he was leaving he did not want to put him a crucial role...

If we don't bring in some talent and open up the purse strings with a number two included (asst manager), that clueless dribble we were dished up the other night, is all we'll get.

People keep complaining about opening up the purse strings and spending more on whatever, but our club is run by business men who seem to make business decisions.

To me, and someone shoot me down if i am wrong, it seems they are planning to tighten up finacially to get through the ACL and V5. A successful Adelaide lost $400,000 just on ACL costs alone. If we were to lose a significant amount of dosh then we would be looking at a very reduced playing roster for a number of years. Imagine losing what we have now, to have it replaced by more state league players.

I would not be surprised if we are the first team to get through the ACL campaign, successful or not, without losing money. If we do, then we have no repercussions for the years to follow and can look to build on our squad again come V6.

OK we may have no big signings to glorify (but then again who knows what will happen before next campaign) but we are a very well run club with the future in mind.

Porter played RM last season for CCL but in his 1st year with them, he played no10

Scottmac, I suspect the GFC/club tugg has more to do with our prudence at the moment.

My issue is not that we cant afford better players, but are we able to get the most out of the ones we have? IMHO, the answer to that Q is no.

I don't think LM should go, but we do look in need of some fresh ideas from an Asst Manager / Senior Coach as we haven't replaced Fergie...

What's Sully up to??????

As for Porter, he played well in CM in the Pre-season Cup game against Sydney and scored a goal - but I don't think over a season he can do better than Hutch
