* I thought Wilko played well maybe one of our best in a poor performance. Smeltz hardly had a chance to score and Wellington failed to penetrate the defence which shows the team has tightened up. Last 4 goals off set pieces and i know at training the boys have been working on it as the gaffer sees it as an area of concern.

* Osman put some good balls in but no Mariners players were making efforts to the back post and hence his balls might have looked poor.

Changes i would make is bring D'Appuzzo in for Boogs if he is out. Macca in for Matt. Osman to right back with injury to Clark and Porter in Midfield. Greg O in for Hutch.
4 changes but it might just spark the side. But we know the gaffer is loyal and probably will stay solid.

Bulldog I totally agree with your Wilko assessment, close to our best IMO.

But Osman... are you serious, unless your seven metres tall no one is getting a head on any of his crosses. The balls were either slamming into the defender marking him or landing 10 metres the other side of his team mates.

I also don't see the point in benching Matt Simon, close to our best so far this season and this may shatter his confidence. He is also scoring goals I dont understand the logic there mate.

The less said about that pathetic performance the better.

Danny Vukovic was great in his return, it could of been more lop-sided if not for his play on a few occasions. Bojic can hold his head high too it has to be said, he busted his balls out there.

Great point re: "absence of leadership" ... I thought that myself. Again, apart from Danny in goal, no one stood tall and rallied the boys who were obviously flat perhaps with the exception of Bojic. Really disappointing.

Newcastle will take the points if we serve up more BS like that on Friday.

We have the short turnaround, FIRE 'EM UP LAWRIE!

Agree 100%

no and its not like it helps- the one guy in line with the sideline couldnt get it right!
He sucked at those calls. We are talkin bout 10 times approx. I agree with 2 times maybe
he is gettin confused with footy- in football the whole ball must go over the line (not even leaning on the line)
You frighten me.  How somebody with experience refereeing is too thick to remember that, despite what you want to think, you wouldn't have a clue if the ball was on the line or over it from your vantage point is in the stands is beyond me.  Truly terrifying.  You reckon 'I could even see it from where I was'  Well, genius, the point is that you can't see it from where you were.

And thank god kiwi's gone, stupid twat.

You know, we complain about all the long balls on Sunday - but the sad part is, the long balls probably gave us the best chance of possession.  Way too many short balls went straight to them.  We couldn't even get basic passes right.  Not running to support your teammates, ok, I can forgive that in that weather - though I would've thought knocking the ball around a lot, just holding it up and let them run would've been the way to go, then leave the long and through balls for the end of the match.

We did create a few good and brief opportunities, but nobody had the confidence to hit it first go, and by the time the ball was controlled, the angle had been closed down.

You know, the sheepshaggers have nothing to brag about.  To ONLY beat us 1-0 when we play that bad?  That's pretty fkn embarassing.

What's the deal with foxsports highlights this weekend?  All we have now is a few replays of the goal, then watching their clowns drone on for a few minutes.  Pathetic - what's going on?  did their highlights editor get the sack or something???

Any word on Clark? To me it looked like a broken collarbone.
Very disappointing game. Not going to single anyone out. All round a poor team effort.
We were lucky to a point from scum in R1 and need a big turn around if we are to get a result on Friday.

I was watching both AR's as I have a theory that THEY are a major contributor to some of the terrible officiating we are seeing in the HAL (apart from Breeze who is just inept)

To be fair, I think their performance was ok. The female was particularly good, her pausing to make sure she got offsides right was well done.

She was also obviously communicating with the ref if she wasnt 100% sure which is great to see

As for the ball being in or out, FFS, the only person really able to judge is the AR who is looking along the line.

Greenpole - I agree that poor assisting has been a problem.  There's one or two who I wouldn't want running my line on a low grade Saturday junior match, but they've always been amongst the FFA favourites, but I've always said politics is a major problem.

FFA seem to have weeded out a lot of the incompetent and lazy assistants, which is good.  Though with assistants, nobody's going to really care what they do until their blunder leads to a bad goal being scored or a good one being disallowed.

It's a tough job, and like the referee it isn't possible to get it 100% correct, but some of the major blunders have let the team down - though I think there's a bit more competition for the AR positions (there's twice as many positions available, obviously), so the FFA have a bit more flexibility to drop them for poor performances, which they have done at times.  The NYL should help with improving the standard too.

I quite like Sarah Ho - she puts in a lot more effort than just about any other assistant out there, and Bay 16 is not the position to argue against offside or ball in/out decisions.  Heck, even if you're a metre back from the line, you can no longer tell accurately whether or not the ball is just on the line or just out - and you may only need to be a metre off the offside line to suddenly be unable to accurately call those.

Despite the numerous coaches who are insistent that halfway offers the best view :D

ON a side note, was I the only person who was greatly embarassed by the air guitar contest at half time?

Seriously, that's the kind of bogan rubbish you'd expect to see at Newcastle....

It might be time to take some chances, experiment a bit.

I'd like to see Macca get a full game - give Sash some time on the bench.  I'm getting sick of his hotheadeness (is that even a word).  If we're goin' to paste Hutch for the diving then Sash needs a good talking to.  His rashness and stupidity is going to cost us sooner or later & I worry it'll be at crunch time when we need him.

I know Porter gets a baggin' but I like him.  He's always running and trying to get involved.  After yesterday's game we need the likes of Porter, Pedj and Adrian just running and getting involved and hassling the shit out of the opposition.

Disappointed in Os yesterday, but I'm willing to accept he's still getting back to form after the injury.  But we can't afford to let him have too many off games.  Let's give D'Apuzzo some time.  Let the kid get a taste and see if he can deliver.  If he wants it bad enough he'll do the job.

I don't know the ins and outs of who plays where.  But I do know we were outplayed against Adelaide 1st half, and Wellington should have been sent home with their dags between their legs.  Let us all pray that they pull their heads out and do a lot, lot, LOT better against the scum.  I faaarkin hate losing to those pricks.

If we had a left winger in which hutch is meant to play there would have been balls for someone on the back post but no one made the effort.

Matt Simon is struggling with the physical nature of A-League defenders like Og from AU and Durrante WP. It wont shatter his confidence and he will be better late in the game coming on fresh and providing that impact. Dylan is stronger and deserves a chance as he was our best striker in pre-season before he got injured. You cant drop sash he has been outstanding this season and working hard.

I loved it! I thought the little guy who won it was hilarious. It makes a nice change from racing across the field in a blow up cylinder or a relay race across the field IMO. I felt a little sorry for the two adults performing in that contest. They were humilited by the kids.

Good stuff. It was the only thing that made me laugh all afternoon and evening.

linesman on western sideline- good with offsides...but absolute crap with throwins- ITS THE WHOLE FREAKIN BALL!
Girl- lol at Simon offside- wat on earth was she waiting for

So you were sitting RIGHT in line with the sideline were you kareem?

As for waiting so long for Simon to get it - strictly speaking, under the current interpretations the AR is supposed to wait until the attacker touches it.

They've gotten pretty lax on it, but I guess she stays a bit closer to that interpretation than others.

As for the dive...if it was a card for the dive, play should've been stopped and a free kick awarded.  No reason to let play continue IMO unless the other team has an advantage.

I really, really, REALLY hate it when our players dive.  Makes me feel dirty, like I need to take a shower or something.  It's a disgusting behaviour - I have no patience for cheats, and it's disturbing how much of an increase in diving we're seeing this season.

Was a big dive by simon. Clear as day from my seats right accorss from it. Deserved a yellow.

But how the linesman, from 2 metres decided that a big push in porters back was not worthy of a freekick when he was about to cross is beyond my interpretation of the laws.

So do agree that there was no need for a drinks break on Sunday yet Mick?

no, the drinks break is necessary and most will agree
It wasnt that hot it was only 28 degrees. It is a summer competition. The players need to be able to tough it out or the FFA needs to say no to afternoon football and everything is played at night or late evening.
