2 departures have killed our season in my opinion.  When Ferguson went it became blindingly obvious that he was the main coach and tactician.  The standard of play, work rate, team structure went rapidly downhill following his departure.  I think NQ will go very well under his guidance and with Robbie Fowler up front.

Mile leaving was the nail in the coffin as what became obvious there was how much work he was doing in both preventing the opposition pressuring our defence and also covering for the very big deficiencies with our other midfielders which we are now seeing.  I imagine he is killing it in Turkey where he only has to do the work of 1 man.

The other massive disappointment for me the season is the lack of young players coming through, I look around and see all of the other teams blooding good young players that have far more skill than most of the guys on the park for us and as much as I hate to say it I have enjoyed watching some of the football Sydney and Newcastle have played far more than ours as at least they have tried to get it on the floor and played a passing game.

Now do we need to replace Laurie?  I would say he brings a great community connection and also some good management so if we can replace Ferguson with a coach of similar quality that can fill the gap maybe not.  If we cant then we do need to replace him otherwise we will be back to playing in front of 5000.
Great Post - I think the board has to have a GOOD LONG look at where they want our Club to be, 800k for Jedi and are we anywhere near our salary cap ? Dont think so ! All our off field projects are great, but they need to understand that the 1st team is the PRIORITY, otherwise all these kids at grass roots won't want to come and watch, good football = good gates.

Just hope the Mariners try to play football on Friday and not get stuck into playing long balls up to the strikers. We need to play football and wait for the first goal. We actually have a fair record in Brisbane and will have the advantage of queensland being without key defenders and Craig Moore would have player 90 mins for national team on Wednesday night. Play wide and get Porter and Heff overlapping and cross in for Matt and DMac.

Why is moore out? is it due to the aussie game? they will also be without the hack tiatto.

Moore is not out but he will only get back to Brisbane on Friday morning. Tiatto and McCloughan are out.

Well - what a bunch of depressing souls we have here.

Though a big ask - this tie is still there to be won!!!

The temptation will be for Lawrie to play three strikers - 4-3-3. However, since Caceres has dropped his bundle the midfield is the problem. I would be tempted to go for a 3-4-3 and shake up the midfield. If it works good - if not the midfield will know their place is not safe for the ACL.

The key positions are the DM, LM and RM and AM. Heff and Smitta, in my lineup have to be ready to put in all night. They not only have to bomb forward to take Zullo and Minniecon out of the game but have to put in in defence. Osman as the DM also has a big job helping these guys out and containing Miller/Nicholls.

I have dropped Hutch (I know it won't happen) because his decision making is too slow with McKay and Murdocca around him. Gumps though impressive at times is not a 90 min player but would be on the bench to cover any of the midfield positions. Caceres - like Hutch seems to not be able to handle the quicker guys - especially in the final third.

Our strikers have had to come back to get the ball recently - because of a below par midfield. So this is my big change. Sash to play at AM.

                Danny

      Wilko  Stringers  Pedj

                Ossie
Smitta                              Heff

                Sash

      Simon                Mrdja

                DMac

I like it.......though it will never happen.  I too think Sash can provide that spark in midfield that we just don't have.  Hutch is too slow, both in his thinking and his pace. And I agree Wilko is a better RB than in the middle....but this is probably too big a change for Lawrie and won't happen.

+1

I really think a gamble on Sash is needed. This is his sort of game. I'd like to see hime and Nik on together (and I'd like it to look like it did early V3)

I would love to see the Mariners line up like this

                    Danny
Clark      Wilko            Boogs    Bojic
Porter            Hutch          Heff
                    Adrian
            Sash            Matt S

Bench- Redders, Osman, DMac, Nik, Stringers

Clark and Bojic will be marking Minniecon and Zullo and keeping them quiet. This allows Porter and Heff to get futher forward and play like wide wingers. Porter is a great crosser of the ball and Heff is good going forward. Hutch will screen with Adrian playing inbehind the front 2. Sash works hard and we need that. We need to play football and our strenghts will be getting the ball wide and testing an understrenght Roar defence.
I love 4-4-2 and i think this is the best way to beat the Roar.

i like the three CB's with porter and heff in WB roles, might strengthen our defence whilst keepin a pretty good attack!

it also gives our wide boys (in particular, the wide boy on the side of the pitch where the ball *isn't*) the chance to break early and bomb forward. both heff and porter are quick and fit, let's see them actually put the engines to work!

late change can be to flip to an orthodox 4-4-2 replacing either porter or heff with gumprecht and reshaping accordingly, or if we're chasing still go to a 3-4-3 with sash up front just behind the big boys.

the theory with the back three is there is more cover behind your wide backs, which we need defensively due to Zullo and Minnie, and in turn those wide backs have more freedom to break forward. I think one of the reasons Hutch and Caceres appear to be struggling is that they simply have too few options moving off the ball to pass to.

Thats why you need to play a 4-4-2 with Clark and Bojic at right and left back and push Porter and Heff forward. We dont need 3 players on van Dijk. A 4 means these players pick up the 2 wide players Zullo and Minniecon allowing Heff and Porter to push onto Packer and Seo.
