Mariners V Perth

Good news is that the best referee is back - after a long recovery from a car accident - Srebre Delovski is due to be in the middle for the Heart vs Gold Coast game tomorrow.

That is the best news I have heard this season on the refereeing front. I love Stare bear!

Sorry Style, but with the scheduling as it is - if we want to keep our true starting 11 on the pitch for the bulk of our remaining games, then we have to rest players and be smart.

If say any 3 of the following - Dutchy, Perez, Matty, Weemac, Olly, Pedj or Rose were to pull hammies now or strain calfs and be out for weeks - it could likely cost us anything from a top two finish and a great shot at the toilet seat to a spot in the ACL. A three week odd injury like many calf strains are would see them miss pretty much ALL of our remaining games.

Losing against Perth is NOT what we want. And I'm sure we'll be aiming to win - but will likely not grumble about a point. But in risk analysis, dropping three points now and possibly losing some potential fans for the next game ( which personally I think is negligible) would be of considerably less risk over all.

Also I think the pride in the shirt should not be doubted Style or indeed questioned - these boys have just played three games in the last week. From which they took 7 points - beating our Derby rivals away and completely battering if not actually beating the arguably best performing team of all time in the HAL and some are arguing ever in Aus.

And on a larger scale, they will be playing their 8th game in 30 odd days on Wednesday - Thats a game - less than every four days. It's very impressive to have done what we have done - but with that kind of schedule - we surely need to be smart now and have our eyes firmly fixed on the big picture.

With all due respect FP any one of those players could pull a hammy or strain a calf muscle in any one of the remaining games of the season.

I remember the momentum we built in 07-08 as we kept on winning going into the finals, which culminated in a state of euphoria on the Coast.
We need that again now!
Our average crowd figures this season are only about 7500.

I have never questioned the "pride in the shirt" that our players have.IMO it`s one of the most respected in the League.
What I do question is, giving players a first team spot because we need to rest a player & not because he is the best player on the day.
I think that weakens the value of "the shirt".

It also depends on how "large a scale" you are looking at & from where you are viewing.

IMO playing the best team each game will, in the long term, show the people of the coast how serious we are in giving them the best possible representaion.

When these players look back, after there time with us is up, they should know in their own mind that EVERY time they pulled on a MARINERS shirt it was because they were the best player available to play!!

Will prevent burnout, injuries (to our number 1 choices, as selfish as it sounds). I have never been 25 and older but I have been on a plane to Perth and it takes a lot out of you and your muscles, then bearing in mind the jetlag (The Mariners boys will be playing at 10pm-midnight according to their bodies), then play against the likes of Jacob Burns... Then jump on the next plane straight back to try and put on a performance when you get home.

There's definite pride in the shirt, but then there's knowing that you're valued enough not to have your body put through something like that when there are men just as worthy of wearing the shirt who can step up, also considering the boss wants his best men ready to unleash for the remaining matches

I'm not getting into the play or rest debate except to say a midweek trip to Perth is a big ask and if anyone has a niggling injury it is probably a game that Clarky would advise Arnie to consider resting some players.

The average crowd figures have been on a downward spiral since the FFA spoilt the fairytale of a home Grand Final. I think it will be a long hard slog to pick up numbers.

TBH - the only way that some of the struggle would be avoided would be.

1) Qualify first for the Grand Final - possible
2) Host the Grand Final (won't happen - the FFA won't admit their mistake)
3) Win the home Grand Final

We'll have to agree to disagree then as I believe players in a ridiculous schedule like this will likely need to be rested at some point. it's not really an opinion for me, I'd prefer to have them playing always, but it's a decision surely governed by the mechanical realities of the human body?

Anyhow, luckily the coach and conditioning experts agree with me ;D
:p

Matt Simon,

Doig could score six, break both of burns legs (without even getting a card) make 47 goal line clearances - all the while giving Fowler wedgies, while simultaneously showing him the dirty pictures he just text to his wife at half time ...
And Dutchy would _still_ walk back in.

YES he really is that good.

Hooooww lucky are we!!? :eek:verhead:

So, if we line up -

Ryan
Sainsbury Wilko Doig Gallagher
Hutch
McGlinch Lewis
Amini
Baird McBreen

would this be the youngest Mariners team ever?

Probably won't lineup quite like that but if we did it would be hard to judge - Doig, Hutch, and McBreen push the average up a tad

I am led to believe that Dutchy, Rose, Perez and Kwasnik are all definitely staying at home at least.

I can imagine that Simon, Griffiths and Pedj will all start from the bench but that is just my hunch.

I was expecting Perez. Not because if fitness or tiredness - he's still coming back from a long rest. But rather because he apparently hates flying.

Dutchy deserves to rest those 'old' bones, but will be a big loss.

I think it is a clever move of Arnie to spell players with the finals looming. I might think differently if we lose though!

Looking forward to the understudies stepping up and pressing for positions. Great to know we have some depth and quality.

Loved how Hutch answered the critics, and against the Jets too. He would have been well pleased! Bleeds yellow!

Arnie's comments on the CCM site indicate Rosey won't be there tonight either, in spite of the published team list. Would you play Sainsbury or Gallagher in his place? Assuming Doig replaces Dutchy.

Now that is a tag I would not like.

I think Gerard Parsons is worse, at least Shepheard calls it when (he thinks) he sees it.

I`ve known Gerard for about 15 years. He`s a good referee & is still learning .He`ll get better with experience like most players do.

Mathew Breeze on the other hand has been a prick since way back in the early nineties when I first saw him referee at Wentworth Park.
He is by far the worst referee!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Ok FP we agree to disagree on the resting, but I agree the scheduling is crap.
As I`ve said in an ealier post,Clarkey, will really have to earn his money over the next few weeks.

I`ll gladly say you were right re the resting policy if we maintain second spot, however if we don`t it`s "off to the gallows with you all"...lol

Also,IMO if if Doig did do all of those things, I`d move him to Wilkos spot & give Wilko a rest..LMAO

Cheers mate!!!
