2-1 full time. ill take the 3 points anyday but the peformance by us after the missed pen and the red card was worrying. We looked like the team with 10men. it honestly feels like a loss.

MOM: 3pts: Hutcho, played well
2pts: Ryan
1pt: Sainsbury held his own imo

Lets move on to sydney now.

Would the true first 11 be playing like this? I don`t think so!

Tired players with no rest don't become better players. Why not blood the youth and give them a go in the team so when players get injured/suspended we have players who at least have SOME experience at the top flight.

Why don't Man U / Arsenal / Chelsea play full strength teams twice a week? Player burn out. They have big squads so they can handle the amount of fixtures. We are going an intense period, players will burn out and become useless if they play every single game.

Arnold has justified his decision to rest a few key players with a 2-1 away win at Perth.

3 points was the aim and that's what we got, sometimes you have to grind out results and that's what happened.

Personally I'd be very proud of the team, 10 points from 4 games in 10 days with a long flight to Perth thrown in and an away derby. I agree that we've seen too many times the opposition going down to 10 men and we struggle, we allow them to get a sniff and can't kill the game off, something for Arnie to work on for sure. The boys would have been tired in that second half but they kept battling and got the job done.

A few huge games coming up starting on Sunday against Sydney, they're in better form and we're knocking the ball around very well so it should be a good game. We also still have both Adelaide and Gold Coast away which will determine second spot so there's plenty of work to do to secure that 2nd place.

Adz - 5 games to go, about time we got that table calculator back up :)

Loved the way GA said that Trent Sainsbury is a Perth Boy doing well on the coast LOL heheheheh

I watched the game on a live steam and the audio wasn't all that flash (Pic was OK though)I just want to confirm that I thought I heard a commentator say that Arnie was catching the red eye back last night so he could practice the players who stayed behind this morning whilst the players were leaving Perth this morning.

If that is the case then good on you Arnie. Obviously as soon as the game finished he switched on for the Sydney game. He will sleep well tonight.

That is correct. Lawrie confirmed it on twitter last night on the 442 live commentary.

Hopefully the boys can keep it up, if the unthinkable happens we might be able to sneak up on brisbane

He’s no fool that Arnie; he has asked for the players to be more ruthless in front of goal – against Newcastle Kwasnik has us on edge for an hour after missing a sitter and now Matt Simon misses the great opportunity to put us 3-0 up. If he had scored we would have emulated the 5-0 in Sydney. It’s this lack of professionalism that is hurting us. But, fair go, that was a coaching master stroke by Graham Arnold. To rest such influential players as Zwaanswijk, Rose and Perez, and Kwasnik, who is in the best form of his career, showed balls and great confidence – if the same four players had been injured it would have been described as a crisis. That first half hour was sublime; we were so superior and deserved the 2-0 lead. Sainsbury had his best game of his short career and showed real class on the ball; Doig did what he does best – a magnificent dogged and brave performance, putting his body on the line for the team, McBreen had one of his best games, a handful throughout for Perth and then there was Johnny Hutchinson, the oil in the in the precise machinery – revelling in his role and really enjoying himself. The silly thing is the penalty marked a turning point as a spirited Perth rallied – in the second half they could easily have equalised but equally the Mariners could have added to their tally. The bottom line is Perth is a difficult place to come, the Mariners rarely play well there, but we got three points. 4 games, three wins and a draw is a great return. To the brave went the spoils and Arnie’s decision to spell 4 key players was very brave indeed.

with regard to the penalty:

. interesting that after kwassie miss earlier during the water polo comment was made that matty hates taking penalties (if memory serves me correctly) ... some would say the result was inevitable

. obviously perez is number one choice, others have suggested swayze ... but of those on the pitch - who would you have given the ball to?

. i would think hutch would be a chance or perhaps olly (for the sake of the monkey)

I had the impression that we always flounder against 10 men, so I combed through the stats on ccmariners.com.au. It actually turns out we do slightly better against 10 than 11, scoring 3.5 goals for every two we concede, and winning a higher percentage of games than we do against 11. However you could not say that going a man down to the Mariners will definitely lose you the game. IN many cases the send off is very late in the game with the result pretty much in the bag.
A team that gets a man sent off is going to a) fire up and B) drop back and defend. I think perhaps the Mariners have a tendency to let them gain in confidence during the drop back and defend phase, get frustrated and become vulnerable to counters. I sometimes think it might be better if WE drop back and defend and let them come. I dunno. We're showing a lot more tactical flexibility than we used to but this is something that needs work.

Terrible terrible penalty - no wonder Simon says he doesn't want to take them - he's just mentally not up to them. It was even worse than Kwasildinho's miss against GCU, where at least he had the excuse of having to kick it out of a puddle.
