That Fiji bloke Hare was causing some trouble, scored that goal, but we got the draw away and that's pleasing. It'll be interesting to see Mossy's presser.
EDIT: You know - Hare KRISHNA ( hahaha )

I'm getting a little sick of being disappointed after every game hey.
WP are in very good form, yes. but so were a number of teams before them - MV, AU etc., games we dominated for at least a portion of the match. we did nothing to make me all that hopeful this game.
the tactics were highly defensive and I understand why, but it's not the best way to go and win a game.
Alas, for the good times you must have the hard times.
we really need to recruit our striker well. no offense to Matty he showed why we love him again but 6 goals in 10 games is fail

In all fairness to Matty, he's only played in what? 4 of those games? And only startedin two-or-so? :) We DO need a striker though.

i just meant 6 from 10 for the team, I'm quite happy with Matty's form but he needs some support

We lack pace.
Last year when we played that defensive against the roar we broke quickly with Ibini, fitz and duke. Today we stopped and went back as all our players except Simon were behind the ball. We really missing Ibini speed and ball control.
At least we had a shot at goal and got a result with Moss spilling it and good on Mat for following it in.
Bingham looks lost in the two cameos he's had

Matty's yellow was a reaction to Muscat deliberately standing on Trifiro's calf when he was on the ground. If the ref had any idea or control it should have been picked up. The commentators missed it in the Wellington wankfest that they were on.

We barely held on in the first half, but were better in the second. Good to see that the fight is still there but we need to find some confidence fast.

Mossy just doesn't seem to inspire the team, and the season is slipping away. Any team we play can sit back and cruise as they know we have no attack, and we don't move the ball quickly enough to counter attack, so we can only hope to jag a goal occasionally.

The draw just papers over the cracks that have been there all year.

Thanks... I admit that I am no ref, but they were going on about how 'he really couldn't complain about the yellow'. To be honest I didn't think that what I did see, was worthy of a yellow... But what do I know. I thought Sigmund got off cheap a couple of times in that comparison.

I've been thinking about this, I'm not entirely certain about how much is blue-yellow glasses and how much is genuine perception ;) ... But what struck me was that while they had a lot of attempts, most of the failures were just that, as a result of decent defending, or at least defenders recovering decently. Not the least of which was that ball across goal that came off Krishna. The defenders initially talked about it with some surprise, but Poscoliero really had him shut down enough that all he could do was get the foot on it, no real room to move. He shouldn't have gotten by in the first place, but seeing as he did, the defender probably did the right thing.
There were a couple more of those. Everyone seem to forget that there's more to scoring than getting in front of goal. What looks like a clear GS opportunity, isn't always as clear cut when you're in the middle of it.

At the end of the day, we lost quite a bit of our defensive abilities when both Ando and Monty went off. I thought we started to look much better, the second Matty scored, there was much more intent and a feeling of maybe having found a way in. At the end of the day, Sim did alright for us at times last year, in the full back position, it's a long way from him to Storm-boy and Poscoliero, that was obvious I thought.

Edit: Can't type...

Wasn't he supposed to be a forward though?... Didn't see the last game that he featured in - was otherwise occupied - but I was wondering about it as I was watching today's game. He seemed to be played more as a winger than a FWD, maybe that has something to do with it?

Another piss poor effort but there was one positive. In the last ten minutes we once had 5 players in the opposing half as opposed to our usual 1 or 2.
The other positive was Sim didn't start.
I'll post my opinions tomorrow and Matty Simon was a breath of fresh air but I'm afraid it was the same defensive garbage we have served up all season.

Gutsy Mariners Survive the Shakes
After the shakiest of starts the Mariners dug deep, rode their luck, absorbed injury set-backs, and ultimately came home with a surprising but hard won point. Phil Moss again rang the changes with his line-up, neither Roux nor Duke featuring at all. Montgomery returned; with Poscoliero at right back.
The shakiest of starts came courtesy of Zac Anderson whose tentative touch allowed Krishna to dispossess him; as Anderson fell he endeavoured to play at the ball with his head, fouling Krishna, but getting a kick to the head for his trouble which was to have serious consequences later; and a yellow card from an unsympathetic humourless referee.
The Mariners were quite unsettled for the next twenty minutes; Krishna causing them all sorts of problems. The lightning quick Fijian headed a difficult chance wide then had a much better opportunity but Reddy stood tall to block the shot. And then Bonevacia popped a shot over the bar when in the clear with Reddy exposed. It was a huge let off for the Mariners.
Montgomery then limped off with a veteran’s injury, it looked like a calf strain, to be replaced by Trifiro who almost immediately had Moss stretching to finger tip a free kick on to the bar. It was a moment of genius justifying the decision to extend his contract for two more years.
The Mariners were defending desperately, smothering the Phoenix attackers with numbers in defence. Neill was doing a very good number on the dangerous Nathan Burns. Matty Simon was holding his end up by annoying and frustrating the Wellington defenders. Tempers were becoming frayed; it was good to watch.
On the half hour it was Reddy again defying Krishna; and then Burns shot tamely at Reddy with the Phoenix overcooking the approach play. The Mariners were desperately baling water out of a leaky boat but ten minutes later came sudden, unexpected relief.
The Mariners had begun to play some reasonable football, they were keeping the ball better, and taking the game, albeit tamely, to the Phoenix. And then Simon struck! Fitzgerald jinked past a defender and hit a hard shot at Glen Moss who could not hold it and Simon eagerly, and calmly, slotted the ball home.
Phoenix could not believe it; the Mariners kept smothering their attacks and Matt Simon kept annoying them. Krishna closed out the half with yet another miss, under pressure from Poscoliero.
The Mariners started the second half on the wrong foot, Anderson succumbing to the sacrificial head knock, being replaced by Mat Sim; Poscoliero moving to the centre of defence. It meant the leaden footed left footer Sim had to face up against the Fijian flyer Krishna. It did not augur well.
Five minutes in and Muscat’s pass caught the back four square but Krishna shot over the bar. Ten minutes later and Simon was one on one with Moss, but he shot straight at the keeper. The fact he was offside is irrelevant; it was a great chance missed.
The Mariners were smothering the Kiwi attackers, doubly up really well, always chasing and harrying. It was desperate but Rose was organising things well; it was gutsy stuff but they had to crack sometime: Krishna finally converted one of his many chances as the back four were again caught square. Unlike the Jets last week, the Mariners’ heads did not drop. The Phoenix must have hopes of going on with it but the gutsy Mariners were having none of it and held on for the deserved point.
In a game where the Mariners looked as if they would be overrun the character of the team carried it through. Anderson’s courage in putting his head where it hurt for the team demands special mention. Sim coped much better with Krishna than expected. Simon typically led the line whole-heartedly and could never be ignored by the Phoenix defenders. Neill was outstanding against the competition’s leading goalscorer, Nathan Burns; but for me the MoM is the calm and unruffled Josh Rose who lead the defiance brilliantly.
