Mariners to sign Reddy ???

Much happier to see them take it on upfront, still not happy about the (potential) signing.

No player is bigger than the club though it irks me that a player who (to my mind - I was there for that semi in 06) is an essential part of the reason why The Scum came to be called The Scum will now wear our badge.

Very conflicted about this.

Interesting isnt it.

Troy didnt provoke the same reactions when he signed (our 1st ex scummer I think?)

They also had few problems with Saso either when he signed for them.

Scott Parker has just signed for Fulham from Spurs, however, he spent a season at Chelsea in 04/05. He has already asked the fans not to make that an issue and realises he will have to win them over.

Maybe a remorseful interview from Reddy might help?

I took a lot from arnie's statement of how reddy's behaviour at scumcastle and bling
was not reigned in . this speaks volumes for the mariners .

Well, it isn't exactly that he was a player for them, its more as Dibo states

Its not that he was a Scum play, but he was one of the scummiest of Scum players.

And it's official: :(

Liam Reddy officially a Mariner

Central Coast Mariners today finalised their goalkeeper stocks for the Hyundai A-League 2013/14 season with experienced and imposing custodian Liam Reddy officially joining the Club on a one-season deal.

Reddy, 32, will battle to become the Mariners’ first-choice custodian alongside 28-year-old gloveman Justin Pasfield throughout the Club’s Hyundai A-League Championship defence.

At a media opportunity in Gosford this morning Reddy expressed gratitude that Central Coast Mariners – and in particular the Club’s astute Head Coach Graham Arnold and respected goalkeeping mentor John Crawley – had provided him with the opportunity to recommence life as a professional footballer.

“I acknowledge that I have made mistakes in my life and football career, and as such I would like to take this opportunity to thank the Mariners for providing me the chance to make amends and prove that I still have plenty to offer the Hyundai A-League,” Reddy said.

“This is my last opportunity to play at the elite level in Australia and I intend to make the most of it. I have a zero-tolerance contract at the Club, and give my guarantee that I will work hard to not only win over the fans but repay the faith that Graham (Arnold), John (Crawley) and the Mariners have shown in me.”

While Reddy’s indirections on and off the pitch are documented, Central Coast Mariners boss Arnold said the shot-stopper deserved another crack in Australia’s top flight.

“Central Coast Mariners are a Club of opportunity,” Arnold said. “At this Club we believe in second chances and Liam has trained extremely well over the past two weeks to earn his contract with us.”

“His task now is to continue to demonstrate the professionalism and maturity he has shown over the past 12 months in order to validate our decision. Put simply, if we didn’t believe he will do that and that he can add to our Club from a football perspective we wouldn’t have signed him.”

Reddy said he has been made to feel welcome at his new Club by teammates, and the Mariners’ football and administration staff.

“In the short time that I have spent training with Central Coast it has become clear to me that the Mariners possesses a culture unlike any A-League Club I have played at before,” he said.

“Everyone has been welcoming, and when the supporters get the chance to see that I am committed to working hard with John (Crawley) and Justin (Pasfield) in order to help the team win matches, I believe they will come to accept me too.”

This year Reddy played for Sydney United in the New South Wales Premier League. His other former senior Clubs include Esteghlal Tehran (Iran), Sydney FC, Wellington Phoenix, Brisbane Roar, Newcastle Jets, and Parramatta Power.

His reported comments show he knows very well how the fans love him.
However, if he puts in the way he says he will, I'm prepared to let him win me over.
Of course if he doesn't he'll be gone just as quickly as he came in and we won't have to worry about him.
For mine if Arnie & JC are prepared to give him a go, then so will I.

. i would like to leave this issue alone ... but the discussion is far too compelling

. for example: arnie talking about how he (reddy) needs to continue demonstrating the maturity he has shown recently (and considering he has only been on trial for two weeks) ... the guy is 31 - should he really need to work that hard on showing some maturity?

Seems like a few crossed wires (unless it's just me...) as people are referring to 'the incident'. For some it's where he downed a few tinnies on the way to NZ and had a bit of a yawn on the team bus.

For me, it's...

. absolutely agree adz ... and there have been enough different on-field incidents to notice a trend. i genuinely dislike the over-use of the word 'hate' ... but what, from within, inspires a player to do that? in my opinion it is not the 'competitve spirit' and 'desire to be the best' hutch was referring to at the forum

. the disappointing thing for me was that arnie kept bringing it back to the on-flight incident and that everybody deserves a second chance. for drinking on a plane ... fair enough. but for the on field stuff, he appears to have had plenty of chances

. the sob stories about having a family are rather cringeworthy ... should all thugs be offered their dream job just because they have a family to care for?

. the off-field stuff, to me, is always a bit tricky (24/7 role model and all that) ... and they are often blown out of proportion - but these guys must be up-held to a certain standard on the field. this is where the players 'earn' the title of role model ... whether they want it or not. to me, signing reddy (for a second chance) is endorsing all his past on-field indiscretions

... two more points:

. not everybody was calling for 'arnold out' when he was looking at coming to the mariners ... and i reckon many that did were just copying the cool kids. but the reasons behind that thinking is completely different: 'ability vs character' may be an over-simplification but you get the picture

. as for hutch not being wanted at other clubs i think the same argument could be used. if someone like matt thompson is struggling for a gig i don't think hutch would be likely to walk into to a contract anywhere else either

. irrespective of the financial, football or other reasons for signing reddy ... and regardless of the respect held for the man ultimately responsible for the decision - the fans have the right to show their passion for the club as they see fit. this should not be compromised because of the trust they have for the coach and/or his personal opinions of the guy

Aye, the off-field thing I don't care too much about. Hell even when I first heard about it I just thought of the stark difference the reaction to Reddy get pissed on a team flight compared to Merv Hughes legendary flight to England where he drank a million beers or whatever.

Being a grub or overly hard man on field is something else totally. Growing up, I love the graceful defenders of blokes like Baresi and Maldini, who preach stuff like if you shirts is clean at the end of a game you did a better job than if it was dirty. People like Kevin Muscat, a bloke who is obviously one of the more talented Aussie players we've had over the past decade but there is a love-hate because of how he played, I don't like so much. They usually fall into a grey area where I love it when they're on my team and I dislike them when they're on other teams and I revile them if they have been vicious to my team.

Point is, its how you feel about the type of player. Talent is there, making a mistake and getting pissed on a plane shows a lack of professionalism but can't blame a guy for one slip up, but multiple types of incidents like stomping on players shows the type of player he is. I don't really like that type of player, and I really don't like it when it is my players being stomped. And yeah, big difference between cheeky shoves in the box during a set piece and walking over the calves of a player who is already down.

But hey, thats just, like, my opinion, man.

I didnt actually mind Muscat (so shoot me) at least he did it openly, if he came across at you, it was going to hurt.

Stamping on people when you think no one is looking is just a dog act.

THATS the issue, not the drinking

He's a Mariner now, but will need to earn the respect of CCM fans. That said, he has my support while he wears the yellow and navy. However it will take little for this to vanish if he is poor between the posts. JP deserves to be starting keeper, has been a loyal Mariner. Reddy is on a life boat and it wont take much to sink it....

I removed my post as I was going to add to it but didn't get around to it before it was quoted above , but anyway...

Re: the drinking, was just going to add that maybe if he had held it in a bit longer, things might have been a bit different?
Not a "Great A-League moment" but not the end of the world, either?
I know it's not 1989 any more but double standards? No? Question mark?
