Mariners Squad - HAL 14 - 2018- 2019 - The challenge for Mike Mulvey is over

No knowledge, just rapidly fading memories of previous seasons ;) I agree that Olly probably hasn't lived up to his full potential, but it was only four years ago that he fought his way into the World Cup squad. He wouldn't demand a starting spot in the top A-League sides, but I do think he'd be a good fit for the midfield I assume Mulvey is creating. Plus he's one of us.

He left Victory as a marquee and came back to City when they were struggling and made them look immeasurably better. A greatly underrated player that would be better suited to the Socceroo squad than either Trioisi or Brilliante

Fair point! I didn't watch much of City this season, so I was basing that comment more on some frustrated Victory fans' comments about him before he went to Japan, and to say that he may not be wanted at City but he'd be perfect for us. I agree with you though, and if there's one player I really want us to sign it's him.

McGing exceeded expectations at right back last season (though, to be fair, he set those expectations in Round One), but I think Mulvey will want a specialist there. McGing and Rowles might be good enough as cover, but assuming he sticks with a similar formula to his Brisbane team then the fullbacks will be the main attacking threat from wide. Clisby gives us a specialist left back, so I assume we'll see a first choice right back come in. I think Melling will look better in a more limited role as a holding midfielder. He's no Brama (or Paartalu or Brattan for that matter), but I think he'll do well in a defence-focused, ball-winning role so long as he has plenty of passing options when he has the ball.

I've actually been re-heartened by Mulvey's recruitment so far. I tried to ignore everything A-League related for a long time after the last game, but Mulvey's impressed me. He's repeatedly mentioned the importance of everyone moving to the Coast and building a strong culture, and the new signings all seem to have bought into that. His staff looks good and he ensured there was a meaningful job for Monty. So two of my biggest complaints from the end of last season were addressed before we even got to June. I'm satisfied with all the signings so far, and I'd expect at least a first choice striker, wide player, right back, and midfielder to come in. I can't see that we'd spend less than last season, so with the money freed up from Brama, Storm, and presumably De Silva we should be able to get some good players for those positions.

Thank you ..... the fence was getting very uncomfi ..........

$50k a week to $300-400k a year haha

“The boys at Central Coast were so good, such a good group and thinking back it was such a good team spirit,’’ he said.

“We lost together, won together, all went out together and it was a great experience.

“And come here and experiencing something similar, it’s taken me back to those days.

“It’s not too dissimilar, there’s similarities in that we’re underdogs and Central Coast gets written off every year.

I think you'll find Jedinak has quite a lot of love for the Mariners.

Yo !! ............ hope your knowledge of mm proves accurate. Bozanic has turned into a bit of a journeyman since leaving ccm ....... not realising the potential expected by coaches and moving seems to be his modus operandii and griffiths will obviously looking for too much $ so not compatable with mc .
Could do worse than mcging at rb ........ he looked good early last season with everybody else until the great dummy spit by the team. Melling has a temper problem and can get too physical to be dependable as a starter in my opinion.

Whereas the team was building nicely under wombat’s replacement recipe ......... all of a sudden it has dissolved into a cash recovery charlesworth shitfight.

Listening to okon’s comments last night on socceroos panel and seeing the pro postecoglou mantra underpinning his comments you have to wonder if the team suffered scoring wise last season like the socceroos obviously had............

So far half the squad for next season are all coming back from serious injury with two not being retained by the club they were injured for.

I’m very disheartened and back on the fence as it appears the leopard has not changed it’s spots.

How can you do worse than McGing at RB? The plus sides.....he works hard and is comfortable on the ball.
The minus side...... he is not a great tackler, he is not great in the air, he doesn't track his player well, he ball watches alot, therefore loosing his man, his passes are often misguided, he always looks to pass backwards, his throw ins are poor and usually go backwards, his crossing is very poor.
He seams like a nice bloke and is good cover now as he is experienced but he not a fullback in a million years.

The other big plus is that playing wide he is less likely to put the ball into his own net.:innocent:

Cant score any on the bench either, he's rather versatile and can play a wide range of positions. Should never be in the first team IMHO.

You can’t blame him for that. I hope he waits till he sees who is recruited before bailing ........... at least he has the option of bailing and walking away from mc.:(:( I double your grief and add one:(.

He was in the team (captain as I recall) so he has to shoulder some of the blame just like all the others.

If he went...Simon for captain?
{Cue arguments}
A five minute argument or a full half hour?

Depending on who we sign I don't really see Simon being on the pitch for ninety minutes.
That doesn't include the times he's sent off by the way.

For the robust style of player he is,Simon doesn`t get red carded that often...
