Hyundai A-League season preview -
Central Coast Mariners:

If there is a silver lining to the Mariners’ coach sacking in August, it is that the new man - in this case former Socceroo Paul Okon - has enough time to stamp his authority ahead of the new Hyundai A-League season.

Whether that’s enough time to help them back up the ladder remains to be seen – though as we’ve seen with Leicester City in the EPL, nothing’s impossible.

If the players buy-in to the Ange-inspired Okon philosophy, the fans get behind them and the new boss can fix their goal-scoring problems from last season and work on defensive solidity, the 2013 Championship winners will go a long way to improving on their win-loss record of last season, which saw them finish tenth.

Expectations for the Mariners aren’t too grand – which isn’t a bad thing for the league’s perennial underdogs. In fact, it's just the way they like it.

The burning questions
▪ How will Okon deal with what is largely a Tony Walmsley squad?
▪ Okon has said he wants his side to play an attractive, passing game – in the manner of his mentor Ange Postecoglou. It wasn’t a philosophy that worked well for the Mariners last season, can Okon’s version do it better in 2016/17?
▪ How much and how fast have their youngsters learnt about the demands of playing in the A-League?

Lessons learnt from last season
▪ Entertaining, open football is one thing, playing that way and winning with a largely young squad is another thing all together
▪ Experience in defence really does help

Road ahead:
It promises to be a daunting initiation for new coach Okon. Not only do they face the likes of Perth Glory, Sydney FC, Wanderers, Roar and Adelaide in the first month, only one of the club's first seven matches is being played in Gosford. The December-January period looms as crucial to their campaign, with five of seven matches at Central Coast Stadium providing a real opportunity to build some momentum. Local derby clashes against Newcastle Jets occur in Rounds 7, 21 and 26, with the Mariners ending the regular season with a trip to Melbourne Victory.

Expected strengths
▪ More experience in key areas with signings like Ivan Necevski in goal, Jacques Faty in defence, Mickael Tavares in midfield plus added firepower in the front third
▪ Low expectations after collecting the wooden spoon last season.
▪ Okon's vitality and new ideas

Potential weakness
▪ If Faty, Tavares and keeper Ivan Necevski are out for extended times, it's a young defence that must banish memories of last season's 70 goals conceded in 27 games and step up.
▪ Overall squad depth

Tactical approach
This is Okon’s first job in the Hyundai A-League so it’s difficult to say with any certainty exactly what system he’ll play. With so little time between his appointment and the start of the season, it may still be a work in progress come Round 1. While the Mariners played a 4-2-3-1 for much of last season, Okon could tinker with that considering there’s no real genuine no.10 at his disposal. With the likes of Connor Pain and Fabio Ferreira in the side, you can be sure he will look to utilise their speed in wide areas.

Breakout star Adam Berry.
The teenage defensive midfielder is highly regarded on the Coast, signing a contract extension in August only months after inking his first professional contract. Berry, who spent time in Leeds United’s academy in England, is a boyhood Mariners fan and will push the likes of Mickael Tavares and Liam Rose for a starting spot in midfield under Okon, who loves giving youth a shot.

Best-case scenario
If Okon shows as much ability as a coach as he did in his playing days, then better days are certainly ahead for the Mariners. This season will be about restoring some pride – something they can do with improved football and results. Probably haven’t improved the squad as well as other clubs meaning it's potentially difficult to see the Mariners pushing for the Finals Series, but a few more wins, a stronger defensive unit and a more effective brand of football is the minimum expectation on the Coast in 2016/17.

Absolutely terrible. Know the feeling and I've known other athletes who have done two ACL's almost back to back. The only upside is that as terrible as it is, there is usually no reason you can't recover to full strength and never have it happen again. But another long road ahead... huge test of character...

You can do it Jake.

Jake Adelson is likely to be out for the whole A-League season with confirmation the Central Coast Mariner has ruptured his ACL.

Adelson picked up the injury in the the final minutes of Saturday's friendly with Wellington in Sydney.

The Mariners confirmed the left-knee injury Tuesday after Monday's scans.

Adelson will meet with an orthopedic surgeon in Sydney this week ahead of a knee reconstruction.

"The Central Coast Mariners wish Jake all the best on his road to recovery," the club said in a statement.

The 20-year missed nearly nine months of football after rupturing his other ACL in December last year.

The winger/ fullback is a Blacktown City junior and spent two years with Everton before joining Western Sydney in 2014.

He signed for the Mariners in 2015 and made his A-League debut in round seven last season.

I was once a fairly promising junior Aussie rules player (played for Vic Metro at the U16 national championships) until I broke my leg. I worked hard to get back and did months and months of rehab lined up for my first game back for my club and within fifteen minutes I had broken it again. I've never played again and it severely affected my mental state for numerous years. I hope the club supports Jake fully because this will be one of the toughest times in his life. Not just physically and monetarily but psychologically too. This can be the darkest time in a devoted athletes life.

20yo Jake Adelson x2nd time,
23yo Corey Gameiro just did his x3rd ACL

2 young players within a week, seems that ACL injuries are becoming far more prevalent and also amongst younger & younger players, not just with older aging players.

As Adelsons done the opposite knee to what he injured 9 months prior, it would be interesting to know if there's any research going into the link of players doing their ACL, rehabing & making a recovery - to only then go and do the ACL on the opposite knee soon after ?

Should there be just as much focus rebuilding strength on the 'non-injured' knee's ACL, as to the actual knee that’s suffered the initial injury ?

Muscular atrophy is going to occur in the non-injured leg, by the sheer fact that it's no longer working as hard as it was pre-injury.

I'm guessing Adelson wasn't on a significant amount, wage wise.

To find a replacement for Jake, a player that was being primed as 'the back-up' for Storm Roux, who himself is coming back from a serious injury ! is def. going to be a tricky one.

Do we spend the comparitve $'s as what Adelson was earning ?

What if (God-forbid), Stormy has some sort of set-back/form drop & we spent the bare minimum on the RB replacement of JA ? & the 'cheap new-guy' doesnt cut-it either ???

I say, 'spend a bit more' of the $$$'s and sign a quality player AND make sure its one that has some versatillity - other than just as a RB.

I'm wondering if there is some kitty left after JRose went to City. I figured it's all been left until Okon works out what he needs. This may contribute

Agree, with Rose gone and Adelson injured we are now a bit thin at the back.
Storm is still recovering, McDonald seemed to lack pace on Sunday, McGing is a squaddie for the back 4, Ascroft has proven he is no right back but is cover at CB.
A couple of injuries/suspensions early on and we will be farked.

Absolutely gutted for Jake. I was really enjoying the afternoon at Knox but that left a real sickening feeling over day. I hope we see him in a Mariners jumper again but he is unlikely to be able to prove himself before his contract runs out.

I wonder whether it would be worth exploring Everton loan options. Gethin Jones was born in Perth so would not take a visa spot, RB captain of their U21 side and I think captain of Wales U21. Been loaned about and had a couple of Championship sides looking at him recently. Since he qualifies as an Aussie the age criteria that blocked Galloway wouldn't apply.

Apparently injury replacement players can be foreigners so we don't have to worry on that front. Would Charlesworth be willing to stump up the cash though? We were looking at Giverin weren't we? Would be a prelude to his full signing if Okon is interested.

Giverin is a left sided player though. Jones while primarily a RB also plays at RM, LM, DM, CM and LB. Given that we need to cover a RB injury and a RB player coming back from injury he seems a better fit and is quite versatile.

Given we have lost 2 defenders (Rosey and Jake) it is a must that we replace at least those 2 as a minimum. Storm is still a while off from his best and I don't want to see Posco taken out of the CB position unless we have someone else very capable of stepping in there. Giverin must be a real chance if he can get around the visa issue as a injury replacement....but still feel we need a really good defender who is versatile as well.

Central Coast Mariners stalwart Nick Montgomery is hoping citizenship will help him add years to his A-League career.

The English-born Scot has been pivotal to the Mariners since arriving from Sheffield United four years ago but his contract runs out at the end of the season.

Montgomery already has his A-class coaching licence and is aiming to go for his Pro licence soon, but says he's in no rush to coach yet.

And the midfielder told FourFourTwo's latest issue he is hoping to extend his stay in the A-League by moving off the visa player list when his citizenship is approved this season.

I'm 34 now and I feel absolutely fantastic," he reveals in the bumper FourFourTwo, on sale now. "I've definitely got a couple of years left on the field.

"At some point I'll look at the situation and what the future holds. Hoepfully that will be with the Mariners. My family is really settled here.

"I applied for citizenship in September and hopefuly that will come through this season which means I'm a non-visa player which, at my age, will be a big bonus.

"I've definitely got a couple of years left on the field so we'll see what happens..."

The interview with Montgomery is part of FourFourTwo's A-League preview special, with every team's tactics analysed, strengths and weaknesses pulled apart and managers under scrutiny.
