It sounds like shopping is done for ccm but a 10 and another CB would be great.

We got lucky with Powell - I do wonder if more opportunities like him landed in our lap if maybe we'd reconsider and go one more signing

Had a bit of a re think... with some of my favourites Draytons wines to assist with the thinking nay analysis...

Aside from Austin and Bray i don't think we have lost a player we would have kept.

Key replacements are interesting, three SFC off-casts / a MV off-cast / a journeyman striker.

What they are if nothing else they are better than the players we had in their positions last year.

With an older Keeper, an experienced back and an experienced ball playing DM our defence looks much stronger and they should be able to guide the likes of Mickey Neil & Storm, Pain seems to be a worker more like Olly B IMO with an ability to drift in from his wing when needed. I still don't believe he is in the same class as Austin however neither is he hopeless.

Powell could be a very smart buy especially if he can settle and play between the lines as a false 9, with Liam Rose / Fab and Pain feeding balls into O'Donvan with Powell running in behind.

Hand on heart not on the other thing the run on side this year is much stronger than last year. Additionally the kids have had a years experience and have survived the cull of players so this must give them some confidence.

The Trent Boy and some others look very exciting subs.

Now for the kicker ... do we have the coach to technically out think the other coaches.... Honestly I can't think of one ... LM at his time was the best or second best coach in Hal, Arnie was second only to Ange, Moss was let down by his choices to bring into the club and arguably one of the worst coaches in Hals history at choosing who to sign... TW signings to date have been sound... can he turn it around on the park.

Time will tell

My run on side
.......Necevski

Storm, Poscolerio, Faty, Neil

..... Tavares.

Monty, Rose, Pain

Fab / Powell , O'Dovan

Bench key players say Powell above, The Trent Boy, Bringham, Ascroft, McGing, Fletcher

Mickael Tavares insists he can help to rebuild Mariners - and reveals why he decided to leave Sydney FC

He gave up a contract with Sydney FC to move to the A-League’s basement side, but Mariners recruit Mickael Tavares is adamant his new club can avoid a repeat of last year’s historically poor performance.

Tavares hopes to play some part on Tuesday when the Mariners head to Victorian state league side Green Gully in the FFA Cup, a banana-skin fixture that has the potential to hobble the A-League’s side season from the outset.

Admitting that a deteriorating relationship with Sydney coach Graham Arnold had expedited his decision to move up the F3 in unison with cousin Jacques Faty, Tavares said that the pair could play a leading role in restoring the Mariners’ competitive credibility.

The former Senegalese international said he had not taken much convincing to join the Mariners, despite the Gosford side’s struggles of last season.

“Because they were interested in me and my cousin, that made it easier - when you come with someone who is close, that makes it easier to decide,” he said. “I really enjoyed the atmosphere, the training ground and the people. The coach told me his ambition for this year and I was very impressed with everything I saw.

“We’re happy to be here - we got the opportunity, and in football you never know what will happen. Today you are here, tomorrow you can be somewhere else. When the Mariners came in, I didn’t take too long to think about it.

“Australia is a nice country but we’re not here for holidays. We like football, I want to play until my legs say stop because I love it. In Sydney, my relations with the coach at the end wasn’t that good to be honest, not like in the beginning. I was feeling maybe it was the time to move and see something else.

“For sure there will be motivation but not just against Sydney, it will be for all the season. We want to perform as I know I can do and the coach will hopefully give me the opportunity to show what I can do.”

Tavares conceded that Green Gully would be primed for an upset, one that would accentuate concerns over the Mariners’ ability to improve on last season.

“In every country the cup games are the same,” he said. “When you play against a small team, they are very motivated to play against the professionals. We know what type of game it will be so we have to be ready for it. It’s always important for the confidence - every game, even in the FFA Cup against a small team, you have to take it seriously. I think everything will be right if we take the opponent seriously.

“I can also say that last year [the Mariners] were not that good so hopefully this year can be only better than the last one. We have some new players, even on the offensive side, and the team is stronger. Hopefully me and Jacquey can bring some more experience, that’s our role in the team.

“A lot of players who were here from last season, they want this year to be better. The coach has tried to bring in some experience, and we can bring some more solidity. The spirit is very positive, everyone is on the same page so I don’t see any reason why we don’t do better.”

WTF?

Seems any team who wants to make good on their ambitions decide they need to be more like the mariners - and so poach all our players.

All the best to Josh if he goes, he's a good guys who's given us a lot. And to be honest from a ccm perspective is coming to the end of his legs anyway.

AND it would free up some cap space for another signing.

Still, another turn I did not expect

Good result..... Rose was very dodgy last year. Micky Neill is still very green so as long as we replace Rose with a decent pro we will be better off.

If true. Getty is not infallible, that's an ok outcome.

Would be one of the bigger earners and his legs have gonr

Still... Can't help but wondering wtf the point was of FFA banning inter-club trading - when half the fscking starting 11 from last year has gone to either City or Victory.
Once that's said - what does it say about the claims that noone would want any of our starting 11 last year? ;)

Heh yeah - I know he's supposed to be a fan, but comments like this, in response to a comment about Rosie's failing qualities, makes you wonder if he's even been watching for the last two seasons ;)

Been forced to play different positions in a team that has really struggled.

Anyway - much like with Matty, I would've preferred that he retire at the club, but can't blame him for taking what money he can get... Again, I have to wonder though, about the Melbourne teams freely raiding our stocks this year.

Interesting thing - of the squad, who was signed by whom?

Arnie:
Montgomery
Neill
Roux

Moss:

Ferreira
Poscoliero
Rose

Walmsley:
Adelson
Appiah-Kubi
Ascroft
Berry
Bingham
Buhagiar
Faty
Fletcher
Heward-Belle
Izzo
McDonald
McGing
Necevski
O’Donovan
Pain
Powell
Tavares

Monty is the one and only left who was in the Championship season. And he didn't play in the Grand Final due to suspension. Josh Rose was the last left who played.

There's just over a handful of players who even played alongside Hutcho:
Ferreira, Montgomery, Neill, Poscoliero, Rose, Roux

This is overwhemingly Walmsley's squad; much more so than would normally be the case for a manager who had the role for just over two years.

But you look over the squad and I think it's probably a lot better than it was six months ago.

Mind you, the list of players who left (for one reason or another) since Walmsley took over is pretty extraordinary - some came and went under his reign:
Anderson
Austin
Bosnar
Bray
Caceres
Cairncross
Cernak
Duke
Fitzgerald
Garcia
Griffiths
Heffernan
Hutchinson
Kalik
Major
Morton
Nash
Pandurevic
Reddy
Rose
Sim
Simon
Slater
Stella
Trifiro
Uskok
Vernes...
