There needs to be a draft or lottery system of some kind to allocate the funding each year without it all the guest rule and marquee fund does is make the league a farce.

That was an idea originally thought up by Mike Cockerill in the early years of the A-League.

He proposed that a 'Lowy', or similar corporate sponsored $10Million to divided equally to each of the 10 teams to have a single Marquee that was to be paid $1Million.

The FFA could select/court the players and then a lottery would ensue, of the
'10 Westfield Marquee's' .

Strikers & Attacking-Mid's were the general consensus of the day of what player's would be sort after.

1st ball drawn, got first pick.
No additional cash to be offered, that way no player's ego .... erm ..... I mean pay-packet was bigger than any others.

That's what the FFA should be doing NOW, they just dont have the ca$h to do it or are yet to find someone who does.

The FFA have made no secret of the fact that any financial assistance provided to sign a marquee is a payment in return for marketing services. An ageong Holman who retired from the national team long ago and has been topping up his super in the middle east is not really someone that the media and average punter is going to get excited about.

For this same reason, Perth will never get significant assistance as any marquee (see William Gallas) is not going to be available for regular East Coast based media appearances.

Holman fits the marquee role perfectly, as it stands, for the $10mill fund. What he does not fit is the full season guest marquee that was made for Tim Cahill, Ronaldinho, Torres and the like. This is the way Brisbane wanted to fund him and the FFA rightly said no.

Haven't looked into the info regarding the FFA funding, but ....

If a Holman type players fits the criteria for a Marquee & accessing the $10million fund (??) but NOT the Guest Player Marq. I'm assuming by your post, that there is an additional fund for the GPMarq. ???

And if it's all about media appearances then it doesn't matter who Perth or Adelaide want as a Marquee or GPMarq. they'll never be able to service the East coast playing half the season in the middle & west of the country.

“The full season guest player opens the door for clubs to attract high profile players that not only bring talent and exposure to their market but the entire competition,” FFA chief executive David Gallop said in a statement.

“This is a sign that we are serious about making the Hyundai A-League an exciting competition for our fans and an attractive proposition for high profile players to play their club football.

“As the A-League has grown, the standard of play has dramatically improved and we believe the creation of this extra position will allow for continued growth in performance but also marketability and visibility.”

Clubs will receive financial assistance as part of a marketing agreement if they attract players who satisfy FFA criteria built around broad appeal of the entire competition.

“To satisfy the full season guest player criteria players must pass stringent marketability tests to ensure the club is not only signing a quality player who can add to on field performance but they will become pivotal to the marketing of the Hyundai A-League,” Gallop said.

“It is no secret that clubs and FFA have been in discussions around this concept and players who may fit the criteria but this change to the competition regulations opens the door for all clubs to have equal opportunity to take advantage of the full season guest player spot.”

My out of left field idea is for Gombau to take over as coach of CCM with U23's Aussie team being his priority so when he would have to choose he'd do national duty and hutch can take over during those periods.

Why!

Gombau can keep his coaching juices flowing instead of sitting around for most of the year.
He would entice top young talent to CCM to play for him to help them make the national youth sides.
He would polish them and we could sell which is our Moto.

You can argue you don't want your head coach knowing this is his second job. Absolutely but
Gombau has personality that would bring fans through the gates. Would have the side playing attractive football and can keep the sales register going.

Radical I agree but your alternative is TW.

6 games and the job could very well go to him or elswhere.

The FFA would be crazy to not let him, another repeat of last sesson for CCM is NOT in the FFA's best interest's going into negotiations for a new tv deal.

I remember reading that Gombau didn't like the pressures of senior coaching and that's why he left Adelaide to develop players in an academy. But if possible he would be perfect.

Gombau in prepared to work for almost nothing shock.

"I've always wanted to earn less money and be bossed around by "Tony 5 Games" who got bumped up to TD" Said the likeable Spaniard.

I have Kwabena in my FIFA team - his stats have him with good speed and balance which make him great to play with. Pain plays very well also in fifa. Let's hope that translate into the 3D world

Reece Caira is back living on the coast (only a couple of Km from the COE).
A local lad, who could be a handy pickup.

Has gone from Wellington Phoenix to Bonnyrigg White Eagles in the NSW NPL to then go to playing in the local PL with his mates at Gosford City Dragons.

Not sure if he's comitted to a longterm future at an elite level. He played at Wyoming with my daughter back when they were 10 yo, as she played with the boys and went to the same schools, actually looked up to him and gave her the confidence to try out and then make it into Rep Football herself to play at CCUnited/Lightning.

Shame though, Reece was a bright prospect whilst at Aston Villa Youth & Reserves before returning to Aus with the WS Wanderer's.
