Mickael Tavares: Central Coast Mariners more like a family

Mickael Tavares is having no trouble adapting to life at Gosford Park.

The holding-midfielder signed with the Central Coast Mariners in April, joining close confidant Jacques Faty in a move from Sydney FC.

Speaking to the media after his first training session with Tony Walmsley’s outfit earlier today, the 33-year-old praised the positivity among the squad after some tough times.

“You could see they have some young players [with potential]…so that’s why we came here, because the coach’s objective was very interesting,” said Tavares.

“Even in our first session I can see there’s a lot of quality…hopefully we’re going to bring the experience and make a good mix between the young and older players.”

After the disaster that was 2015-16 for the Mariners, Tavares and his fellow arrival from the Sky Blues have clear goals in mind at Gosford.

“I came here with the objective to make the playoff [finals] first of all and we are going to work hard for it,” he said.

“I want to make [this] a great season and do the same as we did when we arrived at Sydney FC.”

The Senegalese import also spoke of the differences in environments he is now experiencing, now finding his work a bit more relaxing on the coast.

“In Sydney you can feel a little bit more pressure, it’s a big city,” said Tavares

“[Here] everybody is more friendly, it is more like a family…but we still want to achieve a good season.”

The defender also addressed the buzz that surrounded his signing, with many Central Coast fans noting his resemblance to fellow Frenchman Nicolas Anelka.

“Even in France everybody told me I look like him…so I start to believe it’s true.”
Hopefully by relaxing he means after training!

Does this mean were NOT paying enough & Tav has to resort to dealing to the junkies in Kibble ?

Shit journo, did his homework there.

If his personal reasons do not impact him playing for us then we should make every attempt to sign him. He is a quality player, nobody scores 4 goals in one game unless they are good. By all accounts he works harder than most. He would have been more highly regarded except for Del Peiro compromising his position at Syd FC. Pain, Powell, Roy and FAB I like it very much, youth and experience, pace to burn, work ethic and desire, no brainer for me.

If he has returned to be close to home then I doubt he will return to Sydney, and I think we were interested last season before he went to the Nix.

Still have a little bit of concern about how well Faty and Tavares will fit in. Heard a few concerning things from a mate that is friends with Clarky. Let hope its all hot air.
This stuff has to be managed well. These guys are professional journeymen whose families remain on the other side of the world, must be difficult being so far away from support when things are tough here, as well as being unable to be there when needed. Clearly the fact they are cousins is a big plus. Malick Mane was a massive fail in this area, never able to settle with language and cultural issues.

I think we would have stressed the importance of how much they are needed to mentor the youngsters, to be great role models to them. It looked from the outside to me that their form and attitude dipped a bit when they were on the outer at Sydney. Not surprising.

Arnie would be seriously interested in Blake Powell, an attacking player that's good value for money & the bonus that he's a non-visa signing for that position.

Alex Brosque is yet to be re-signed, with many speculating that he's a risk injury wise for what he'd be a$king for.

As well as Matty Simon also mysteriously not released but not yet re-signed as well means Powell could well be an enticing option and the death of both Brosqy & Simo.

That's what we'd be competing against.

I'd rather Blake Powell over Kwabena Appiah-Kubi all day every day.

But I feel TW has a soft spot for Kubi from his NYL days.

As much as I enjoyed Matty Simon battle it out in the Yellow for CCM ......

I think Powell offers more options in both the front third formation & tactical wise.

Throw in the age factor, Powell (25) to Simon (30), in regards to future of offering Powell a 3 year deal .... I'd go Powell.

At the right price. We need a number #10 - but if we don't get a traditional one before January he could play the McBreen type number #10. Attacking from the front, acting as a target and still offer a threat on goal.

The Warm-up asked Central Coast Mariners coach Tony Walmsley if he was disappointed or angry with winger Mitch Austin for wanting to exit his contract with the club and switch to Melbourne Victory, and how he thought the Mariners fared with Connor Pain joining them in a swap deal.

"Look, I don’t want to talk about Mitch Austin, because what I think about it is irrelevant, but what I will say is that I think Connor pain is a fantastic footballer," Walmsley said.

"He’s a full international, an Olyroo, he’s got pace and power and contributes in other areas on the pitch, so in the style of play we’re going to adopt, Connor Pain’s a fantastic fit for Central Coast Mariners and he has come to a club where he’s going to get a real opportunity to shine.

"Perhaps at Victory, because of the quality and depth of the squad they have, he didn’t get as many games as he’s going to get with us."

To be fair to Tony ( I think most of the criticism is unjust), he inherited what he inherited. To compound this he was told by his boss to play an absolutely kamikaze style of play with a squad not capable of that. By the time we stopped the damage was done.Players either not up to it have been let go and allegedly disruptive players moved on. The guys from state league like Sim and Trifiro, who I did like but at their age were not going to add much more, have gone. Players who probably had attitude issues that were disruptive to team morale have gone, Reddy, Bosnar. Players that didn't want to remain at the club have gone, Caceres, Fitzy, Austin. The players that he has brought in have added some quality in Faty, Tavares, Pain. The young players we have now are mostly all capable of reaching greater heights and seem to have a great attitude. Of course, it could all go pear shaped during the coming season but this is really his first season when you can honestly say it is a side he has had a big input in putting together. We still need a quality 10 at least but it looks a decent squad that should challenge for the 6. If we have another bad season then Tony will have to go, and rightly so. Everyone deserves a fair go though and I for one hope he succeeds.
