min wage for someone aged 20 or over was already $55k last season. Also if you think you could snag someone with 100+ A-League app for min wage you live in a fantasy land
Well lets look around the league at his options. (The evaluation rates whether the club would be willing to put an offer in.)

Adelaide United:
Just released him and have signed replacements at right wing (his position when he played there) such as Marc Marino and Ryan Kitto.
Evaluation: Highly Unlikely

Brisbane Roar:
Have Thomas Broich, Dimitri Petratos, (a rumoured visa 10), Shannon Brady, Tommy Oar, Brandon Borrello and Jesse Daley in the positions he can play. They are also unstable ownership wise and look unlikely to sign anyone until that is sorted.
Evaluation: Highly Unlikely

Melbourne City:
John Van't Schip was always unwilling to play Mate as a 10 so I will only count right wingers here, they have Corey Gamerio, Nick Fitzgerald, Steve Kuzmanovski, Stefan Zinni, Chris Cristaldo and Luke Gallo. Van't Schip was also the coach that released Mate so I highly he doubt he would rate him more after a season in which he contributed barely anything at Adelaide. Melbourne is Mate's hometown however so if City are at all interested he may end up back there.
Evaluation: Moderately Unlikely

Melbourne Victory:
Victory have never signed a former Heart/City player. Though they only have Nigro and an NPL player in Jose Carvallo as a 10,I highly doubt that they won't sign a visa 10. They have Fahid Ben Khallfallah, Jai Ingham and Lucas Derrick at right wing.
Evaluation: Fairly Unlikely

Newcastle Jets:
At number 10 our F3 rivals have Devante Clut and Mitch Cooper at right wing they have Andrew Hoole and Andy Brennan. The Jets are probably our biggest competitor for Mate's signature at the moment however they may go for a visa right winger to replace Enver Alivodic.
Evaluation: Likely

Perth Glory:
Perth have three experienced options at 10 in Diego Castro, Nebojsa Marinkovic and Richard Garcia they also have plenty of options at right wing with Chris Harold, Jamal Reiners, Kosta Petratos and in a pinch Adam Taggart or Richard Garcia.
Evaluation: Highly Unlikely

Sydney FC:
Sydney have Miloš Ninković, Miloš Dimitrijevič at 10 they also have Filip Hološko at right wing there is a possible opening here for Mate though only at minimum wage and most likely third choice, as Sydney are always keen to spend as much as they can on foreigners.
Evaluation: Possible

Wellington Phoenix:
The 'Nix have a plethora of options at 10 with Gui Finkler, Alex Rodriguez, Alex Rufer, Matt Ridenton, James McGarry and Logan Rogerson then they have Roy Krishna, Michael McGlinchy, Kosta Barbarouses and Louis Fenton at right wing.
Evaluation: Highly Unlikely

Western Sydney Wanderers:
At 10 they have Mitch Nichols, Steven Lustica, Liam Youlley as for right wingers they have Jaushua Sotirio, Shannon Cole and Jackson Bandiera. The Wanderers are another of the clubs who spend the total of the cap and look to spend as much as possible on their foreigners I doubt they would offer Mate more than minimum and third choice if even that.
Evaluation: Possible

There are only three other clubs in the A-League who could possibly (and that's being very generous) have a spot for Mate. Sydney FC and the Wanderers always try and squeeze as much out of the salary cap as possible so I highly doubt they would pay more than the minimum $55,000 for a washed up if slightly experienced utility forward. The Jets would look to be our main competitor but have yet to sign their foreigners, though it is worrying that their owner has stated that they will use the home grown player exemptions from the cap. I would doubt they would offer him much more than minimum however as they appear to be looking at a visa winger as well as a visa 10. All in all I would say that somewhere between $55,000 and $80,000 would secure Mate with 289,000 being left over for a 10 in a best case scenario and 260,000 in the worst.

The squad is sorta coming together.

My first XI is:

Izzo
Roux - Faty - Poscoliero - J.Rose
Montgomery - Tavares
Ferreira ---- L.Rose ----- Pain
Roy

As much as I want Storm to come back as good as ever I cannot see him starting at the beginning of the season. His scars will be both physical and mental. We need to ease him back.

Posco/McDonald at right back for me and make Storm's comeback very, very slow with a few appearances off the bench before he gets a start if possible. McGing and Ascroft can fight for the last centre back position.

Analysis Paralysis

You're overlooking the most obvious opportunity for Dugandzic to play & earn well above minimum wage of $55k, which as Paolo stated
- he'd never play for a min. contract.

ASIA !

The likes of lesser's playing over in the leagues of Malaysia, Singapore, Hong Kong & even someone like ex-Mariner Adriano Pellegrini in Thailand (now in the U.S.A) earning well above the minimum of the A-League would surely not have Matè too worried.

I think if that had been an option for him or something he wanted to do he would have done so after City released him (and I very well could be wrong on that). Apart from the very top clubs in those leagues most of them are barely professional and often times destroy players with insane training regimes. I think if those clubs could afford above an A-League minimum wage then we would see more players going there instead only released players with only NPL options head over.

Looks like we are not going to get a good no.10. This from Walmsley:

“We’ve filled our visa spots,” he said. “We’ll probably fill two more spots with Australian talent – hopefully with some A-League experience.”

Monty and Fabio must not be getting their citizenship in time. With the squad how it is I can't see us going any better than 8th. :(

That's probably about right. Who would do worse and come 9th and 10th though?

Does that mean Liam will be our 10? I'd be curious to trial Pain there in pre-season and see how he goes too (though that leaves the wing position a bit weak)

Its a bit hard to tell at this stage with all the other clubs not finalised but one would hope Newcastle is rubbish. Sydney had a lot of rebuilding to do. I'd say Wellington will do better this year. Its going to be tough.

Good teams in salary capped leagues are always more than the sum of their parts. They tend to arise from good combinations, strong team bonds and good tactics.

Last year we were shot from the start with the 'peahearts' group that comprised half of our best XI all wanting out.

From that point we were always going to struggle.

What didn't help was the pretty odd approach to tactics. Early in the year it was "all about entertainment", and late on we tried to tighten up but couldn't adjust (especially with all the departures). That means that preseason was effectively wasted, and we had a bunch of near-debutants trying to feel their way in a tactical fog.

If we can just get a decent and united preseason in, and then move into the season with people playing in their proper positions with a shared idea of what our tactics are then I think we've got a chance to at least improve on last year.

Lets hope you're right Dibo. I'd like to see a bit more of 'winning' attitude form the coaches this year. I felt Tony was a bit too open with the media about his tactics pre game last year and didn't seem to care much about winning. It was like he was a coach with no pressure to perform. Hopefully we see a bit more a of ruthless streak this year.

For interest - I'm hearing (just gossip but from a well-connected grape on the vine) that Austin was 'becoming a cancer in the team in the same way as Reddy was', as it was said to me

I'd believe that. He never really connected with the team outside of the game. Live on the North Shore and a such came across as a bit of loner. I hope this year the team can get back to past culture of living and working together on the coast. Its good to see Connor has moved in with Storm and Liam.

Still have a little bit of concern about how well Faty and Tavares will fit in. Heard a few concerning things from a mate that is friends with Clarky. Let hope its all hot air.

Mmmmmmm....oh well if that's it then hopefully we get 2 more who are relatively cheap but have experience and talent to get to another level. Maybe we get Gallifuco and Makarounas and one of Kwabbiah or Burgess ? That's not too bad. Faty and Tavares will make a huge difference, and Pain could do well for us. There's a much more settled look about the squad and Roy didn't really start showing his worth until the last 7 or 8 games. I'm expecting Fletcher to do well, and we do have a lot of young players who will be much better this coming season. I'm thinking we will be 25% better than last season, whether or not that's good enough to make the 6 I don't know.

Im also not surprised, after reading on SFCU that:
"Tavares was vastly overpaid after we had to fight off Wanderers to extend him. iirc he was our highest paid in cap player or very close to it, ..."

I'd reckon that Tav & Faty have eaten up much more of the cap then what we have guess-timated, leaving little for the remaining CB & desperately needed AM positions.

With Gallifuoco still yet to find a club, it means his asking price is diminishing with every day of preseason training.

As for Naumoff, many in the Cove are kinda in 2 minds as to whether they'd have him back.
50% are in the 'Kiki' camp.
the other 50% are in the 'Kaka' camp.
NB: (euphemism NOT Brazilian)

Well the Australian 10 options are Holman (most likely out of out of our price range), Makarounas (most likely I would say), Dugandzic (possible though slightly unlikely), James Brown (former Jet and near constantly injured), Chris Naumoff (failed a medical test) plus Panny Nikas and the assorted NPL 10s.

James Brown has already signed with Avondale FC in the Victorian NPL & I dont really consider him a proven #10.

Nikas is playing well, but at 27yo and already having had a crack at the A-League with 2 different clubs I feel that Rudan would be in his ear to stay with Untd. & see out the season and hopefully also have a good run in the FFA Cup and then look to a $$$ move to one of the leagues in Asia, with likes of Garry Phillips etc.

I think we'd have to offer Panny a 2 yr deal minimum, of whatever $$'s his employment+SydUntd total'd are paying him to get him to leave Edensor Park.
