I'm not keen on the half season marquee as I'm keener for a marquee that is there for the year and suits our team.

However, the advantage of the half year is that it is potentially a higher calibre player that we couldn't afford for the full year. A lot of players will be free agents come 31st December with some potentially in season breaks. If it is a big name (and if it isn't I don't see the point for half a season) we have to have them lined up and at the NYE game if possible for the merchandising and have an internal clearance before the following game on 8th against SFC at CCS. If that is not done then we miss a month and the gloss can quickly come off if the player doesn't adapt. Our 'home' games in the period are below and include the 'financial risk' game in Canberra.

8/1/2017 SFC
28/1/2017 Perth
5/2/2017 ADL (in Canberra)
19/2/2017 Victory
5/3/2017 City
25/3/2017 ADL
9/4/2017 Jets

Charleworth needs to change his mindset regarding the 'Marquee' as a
crowd-puller first and foremost. Its treating this Club & the League like it's some fcuking 3 Ring Circus !

I and I'm am sure many others DON'T WANT to see some 'Magician', or worse still, someone who turns out to be a 'Clown Act' brought in for the final 7/8 games of the season.

The 'Marquee' @ a club like the Mariners (& after the season we just had) NEEDS to be one of, if not 'The most' pivotal cogs in the machine that then raises our level of performance on the pitch. Plain & simple.

NOT one brought in just to perk up the crowd figures.

Why not let a hungry 'Lion' out of its cage in Rnd1, instead of waiting till Jan when the season is just about 2/3rd's done ???

A Lion on the loose in a Circus Big-Top normally has people running for the exits.

BUT, let one loose in the CC Stadium from the get go of Rnd1 & you'll be packin'em in, like the Romans at the Colosseum.

In fact the only 'Marquee' we should be seeing in the month of January is the same one that David Carney's parents set-up on Leagues Club park, as they've done continuously, year after year on the Coast.

I agree with you completely (not the Carnie post) but there are 14 games and finals after 31/12/16. I can see the 'right marquee' that is seen as fit and ready to play and a can add to our team (not force us to change to suit the marquee) - consistently filling CCS not only by coasties but also by our southern neighbours that support SFC and others that don't follow the HAL. However, that is a very rare gem and needs to be identified and courted over the next 6 months not on the back of Liverpool Legends game.

If it is not that sort of marquee Charlesworth should hold onto his money until he can sign a marquee that first of all fits our team and secondly brings in more people.

I disagree that the Marq. "needs to bring in people" period.

They just need to be a player that truly takes the team to another level playing wise. They dont have to be a name per say.

'Jenko' @ SydFc had the skills to win the Golden Boot, & Arnie may have kept him but for the fact that as the Austrian Captain GA knew to well he'd be tied up for qualifiers for the Euro's, that he's playing in NOW.

Whilst Jenko didnt exactly fill up the stands, he did obviously do what he was signed for ........ score goals.

Unfortunately for Jenko, the fickle Syd crowds require a 'Del Piero' ...... The Coasties don't.

Now a 'Jenko' /non-name type player for CCM helping the team score, thus win & thus climb the ladder certainly puts bum's on seats, as well as greater sponsorship interest.

To put it plainly:
"When the team is performing well, the crowds will increase concurrently"

That's exactly what we need !

All this talk of a marquee and we're barely paying the minimum salary cap!

The money that Garcia was on could of and should have gone either to spending more of the cap this year or last year. If my memory serves me correctly we didn't see a particularly large rise in attendances after he was signed. We probably would have seen the same size if not larger attendances had we paid Garcia's wage into the cap as we would have potentially been competing for a finals berth.

We all knew last year was going to be a cost cutting year so why did we spend money on a player who honestly didn't return on investment, even if he did provide some magic.

We should have been aiming towards the finals even more this season with a team above the bare minimum which Garcia's $500,000 wage would have done. Potentially allowing us to secure Alex Wilkinson and others we pursued.

While I want to like Charlesworth and be positive about the direction the club is taking Garcia last year didn't really fit the cost cutting and "moneyball" narrative.

From memory the bulk of Garcia's wage was paid by sponsors (mainly Masterfoods), not the club - so the $500K you're talking about wasn't available to put towards other players.

There was a lot of that reported in the media but I know for a fact that Charlesworth actually paid the bulk of Garcias wage from his own pocket.

To be honest I'd rather see that kind of money going towards rounding out the squad with more quality. Bringing in a marquee for the short term has just never appealed to me. I know it might be fairy land, but I'd rather us stump up the cash and sign a 31/32 year old for two seasons. I think the long term benefits would be much better.

Seems we will priced out of the race for Holman:
Brett Holman’s three-season spell in the Arabian Gulf League looks set to end this summer, with the attacking midfielder attracting interest from his native Australia, the Netherlands and Qatar.

Holman, 32, is currently a free agent after his one-year deal at Emirates Club expired at the end of 2015/16. The 63-times-capped Socceroo is yet to receive any further offers to continue a stint in the UAE, which began at Al Nasr in June 2013.

Brisbane Roar are leading the hunt to bring him back to the A-League after 14 years playing abroad, with further overtures coming from Sydney FC and Melbourne Victory. A return to play in the Eredivisie at AZ Alkmaar – the side he won the title with in 2008/09 – is one strong option in that competition, while Qatar Stars League outfit Umm Salal considered him prior to bringing in Jordan forward Tha’er Bawab.

He also turned down several offers from the Chinese Super League last summer prior to his move to the Falcons and that interest could be rekindled.

Speaking to SBS during a vacation in Spain, Holman was not unduly panicked about where his future lies.

He said: “There’s been interest from certain clubs in the A-League and also Holland, but nothing concrete has been decided. It could be a few days or it could be a few weeks.

“Either way, I am pretty confident something will happen soon.

“It’s just a matter of enjoying my holiday and leaving it all with my agent Paddy Dominguez.

“I’ve already experienced Europe so it could be the ideal time to head back home. I wouldn’t say Sydney is necessarily my preferred choice in Australia just because it’s my hometown.

“I also haven’t closed the door on going back to the Middle East. I am in a good position and there’s a lot of interest, so I am confident that something will be settled soon.”

Holman cut a frustrated figure at Emirates last season, repeat injuries restricting him to just 24 appearances in all competitions during which he scored five times.

Rowdy you were going quite well with the circus thing until this post.
Ray (deceased) & Margaret Carney are personal friends of mine.
Our son`s played together at Macarthur in under 11`s & whilst you may or may not like Davey (who has 48 Australian Caps)
I think you have overstepped the mark of common decency by involving his parents. :redcard::redcard:

It's a play on words with his surname that was sung in Bay16 in the early years. :-|

Circus & Carnival (Carnies) worker's are generally family held & inherited business. The only reason in mentioning parents.

Joked about it several times in the Scummer thread last year.

Dont take it personally.

From the lot of NPL's, Toufic Alameddine from Rockdale City Suns was quite impressive in their FFA Cup campaign last year.

Watching him I thought if this guy was to drop a few kilo's, and adjusted positively to the professional set-up, he could become quite the revelation in the A-League.

I remember suggesting Lujic about 5 years ago and have followed his career a bit. Well worth a trial but he is apparently paid quite well for an NPL player and also has a teaching job in Victoria. So whether he wants to take the plunge on a HAL team or is comfortable where he is might be the question. I suspect many part-timers have the same decision to make.
