That leaves the MARINERS or
............. UNEMPLOYMENT!
I get that. But it still doesn't mean it's an obvious call for him. He's 40. First team footy is hard work. There's a shitload of travel, and if he's going to spend the season getting his arse handed to him he might well have decided he's had enough.

On the cost vs compensation stakes it'd be better to play NPL and (like every other washed up player seems to do these days) set up an academy and fleece kids for as much as you can take.

Lets look at his options then,

WSW: Poppa's not going to do a turnaround & resign him after cutting him acrimoniously.

SYDFC: Have Janjetovic as there #1after a solid season last, talk now chasing Schwarzer as well. Can't see Arnie signing someone like Covic, more so Danny Vukovic if Perth fail to land Schwarzer.

NEWC: Have a quality Keeper in Mark Birighitti & talk of former Perth Glory jnr Jack Duncan returning from overeseas club Randers.

Covic started off his HAL career at the Jets, would they resign him as a No.2 to finish off his career? With a new owner & Lawrie now at the helm, Vuka would stand a better chance of a gig there with LM 's influence/past link.

That leaves the MARINERS or
............. UNEMPLOYMENT!

Covic's said he still wants to play & believes he has 2 maybe 3 seasons left in him.

CCM desperately needs experience & most importantly stability between the sticks for the next 2 years.

Not naive speculation.
He might be going to the Jets because Birighitti is apparently looking overseas. But I agree we should have made a play for him over Ivan if he was truly available which on the evidence we have is looking likely.

I understand that Covic wants back to Sydney, but I wonder about his moves prior to that. Victory cut him after he played the majority of a season for them and was arguably their best player. He was cut from Wanderers. I wonder if there's more than his age at play here? Has anybody else approached him? If not, why not?

Great keeper but has always appeared to be a dick head.......but i dont know him.
I'd way prefer him to Ivan but maybe they thought Nash (with his tiny experience) couldn't handle his strong personality.

Agree with most of what Dodd say's except he hasnt taken into consideration or isnt aware of Austin's shite overall attitude.

And because of that, we got the smooth end of the stick. ;)

CCM .......... Winning! :pirashoot:
(Coming soon to a cinema near you)
I agree with that.
I just hope time will prove that we got the sweet end of the pineapple

Mariners hint at January marquee move
Central Coast Mariners boss Tony Walmsley said the club would dip further into the transfer market but revealed any potential marquee would likely be signed in the January 2017 transfer window.

“We’re being very careful about how to balance the squad now with who we bring in,” he said on Monday as the club resumed pre-season training on the Coast.

“In terms of a marquee, I think we’ll be looking at the January time as we did this year to see how the club’s positioned and to see who in the marquee ranks is available and affordable for the Mariners."

Last January, the club made a big splash bringing in former Liverpool and Spanish great Luis Garcia after he starred in a Liverpool Legends game in Sydney.

It gave the club a huge boost on and off the pitch. And the Spaniard was deemed a success despite not having done pre-season with the club.

His influence on younger players too will be felt in years to come while his presence gave the club a huge lift on and off the park.

The club now hopes they'll be able to unearth another big name mid-season.

“I know Mike Charlesworth (Mariners owner) is certainly open to the prospect of bringing in another marquee for the back-end of the season," Walmsley added.

I would much rather we spend the whole of the cap then splurge on one aging "name" player in January.

How about we bring in the Marquee at the beginning of the season.!!;)

That way we can be competitive and attract sponsorship dollars now and new members.

It seams stupid to do something once the season has already gone.

pretty happy about pain . fab at 10 does it for me .
yes and yes. I'm gradually getting more and more pleased with the acquisition of pain the more I learn about him and would like to at least see fab try number 10, though wouldn't be shocked if the fit wasn't quite right. Worth a try

Not exactly a novel idea is it.

Stupid. Obviously would have been better to have Garcia for a pre season.

Settle in.
Build understanding.
Fitness.
Build a system with his strengths and limitations in mind.
Maxmise and exploit the hype.
Influence on younger players...

Bring him in in January?
Can unsettle the group.
f**k with the balance.
Not adjust.
Not be fit enough.
No understanding.
Less time to commercialise on hype.

The only reason you'd bring one in late is less money. Bad decision by every other metric that I can think of.

So if we don't have money for a marquee for the season ok. But half a season? Forget it.
Jp is right. Spend it on the squad PLEASE.

I'm rusted on - but I know multiple v1 members on the edge. We can afford another calamitous season even less than we can apparently afford a marquee for a year.

Can't we just be normal this once and sign our marquee in the pre season.

Sigh.

Its just a guess. And not a good idea I think.

Just because he dribbles well does not mean he's a 10.

- One of his biggest weaknesses is his final ball and holding on to it too long/ missing the timing when cutting back in. Doesn't signal a good ten in the making to me.

- Not to mention you'd be limiting the value of his speed.

- Lack of familiarity in the position should never be discounted.

- I think there'd also be a very big question mark about his work ethic over 90 minutes as a ten?

Nope. Specialist please.

I don't think it's a wish, certainly not for mine, more of an expectation based on us not having signed a CAM and seeming to be out of visa options.
Personally i think Fab should stay on the wing. I think he's a bit too selfish at times to be expected to feed the ball through rather than try to take the full defence on on his own.
But he's the most mature of the more technically gifted players that we have so short of a new signing he's probably one of the better options.
Musti's contract is up, I think, but I'd be surprised if he'd be keen on coming back here AND being converted back to CAM ;-)

Only need to pay a Marquee for half a season so can get better quality just shorter use
And
We don't play at home before January (slight exaggeration)
And
TW won't be coach

Having already made a plethora of squad changes, there are signings still to be made at Central Coast Mariners.
Back on the job after the offseason break, Mariners boss Tony Walmsley says he plans on adding a number of new players to his roster but will not rush recruitment with a “raft” of options still to be explored.
Central Coast have already signed Ivan Necevski, Jacques Faty, Mickael Tavares and as recently as Friday, Olyroo Connor Pain...
“There’s definitely more recruitment on the horizon,” Walmsley said.
“We have a combination of trialists coming in with A-League experience and very much an open book in terms of Australians overseas who are maybe looking to come back to the country.
“There’s a whole raft of things going on in the background that mean we’re going to take our time a little bit on who comes in next.
“We’ve missed out on a couple who’ve gone elsewhere, but we’re being very careful about how to balance the squad now and who we will bring in.
“Yes, we’re looking for a (number) 10, but we’re just looking for quality because we’ve got great resources all over the pitch, it’s just about how we deploy them now. That will be the difference between us reaching our goals or not.”
