Things have changed a lot over the years, but one thing has remained constant and that is our love of the Mariners. People come and go, some like to post a lot and others just like to read. It's up to you how you participate in the community!

Given our off-season again and imagining Okon in place earlier, wouldn't you think we'd have pitched hard for Wilkinson and Spiranovic (together - which might have been more attractive to wilko in particular) rather than Faty and Tavares given that we've got Rose already for DM and upgrading Berry always appeared to be on the cards?

It would have let us with the flexibility of two visa spots too, taking pressure off Monty, Ferreira and O'Donovan.

It doesn't always help to dwell on the path not taken, but jeez...

I think this year is too early, but from next year I see us gaining some fringe socceroos. Given Okon has links with Ange, we will be playing the same game style, and if your any good you are pretty well guaranteed game time without us having marquees in your way.

From memory the story was that we did go in pretty hard, for Wilko... If you recall, there were stories that went in so early that it almost caused problems with City and the report was that they threw as much money at it as they could possibly find, no pussyfooting - just that Sydney went harder and we can only compete so far, especially when it's against the Smurfs and their cashflow.

So indeed there's probably not much point in dwelling on the past :(

I don't think money would've been the only driver. Prospect of winning would've played a part too.

I think this January might be the time where we pick the eyes out of the good junior talent that Viddy and Okon have identified and sign them on half year NYL contracts before full contracts next season. Then at the end of this season we can do as you say and supplement them the fringe Socceroos or alternatively with visa players given that we are likely to have a few spare visa spots. Back to the days when we had the best youth supplemented by old heads that could mentor the youngsters. :afro:

Interesting...
Okon should have an eye for talented youth and be practiced at mentoring them. Maybe we can go back to being the team with the best youngsters!

Adelaide just signed Lachlan Brooks - would have loved him here to be mentored by a real #10 a la Musti and Perez.

Oli Bozanic is on the outer at Victory. Would be a great no.10 for us. A sneaky move in January would be nice.
Not sure about that one, first he may want too much money and he has been really disappointing for Victory. On the other hand can't help but think Muscat may get desperate by January since they are struggling to beat the better teams this year and look to replace him as a knee jerk reaction. If he gets speared by Victory and they keep paying some of his contract he could be a good second half purchase.

He's a marquee and they would be very, very keen to get rid of him and bring in a good visa player or bring back Milligan. Victory have the cash to be able to terminate him so I think it's a very real possibility if Ollie wants to come.

Paul Izzo and Connor Pain make the A-League team of the week.
Really happy for Izzo he deserves the credit and not just for the last game. Couple of ex Victory players doing quite well since they left the big V, always nice to see players like Pain make a move to get more game time and to back it up with good performances, I was happy with us getting Pain and he is coming along nicely with plenty of improvement still left in him.

Yeah he's been held back, there's just no other way to spin it. But now he has a chance to unleash for us. Always showed a lot of promise, but Muscat wanted the extra 5-10% short term that another player could give him, vs the extra 20% Connor would've given him longer term with better game time/development imo. Problem with 'big' clubs.

So many players we have now given game time too and watched them crawl...then walk...then sprint and then leap tall buildings with a single bound. Whereas I'm not sure Sainsbury would ever have even gotten a start at Victory, and our list of such players is long. Good choice by Connor to come here and get things on track. Same for Galloway. And excellent for us.

Well put regarding Pain and Galloway FP. Muscat is getting a few goals out of Austin but he is so one dimensional the a-league will pass him by in a year or two. Hopefully he joins Caceras and Fitzgerald in the Thai premier league in a couple of years time.

Any chance we could get Joe Cole in the Jan transfer window.
He has scored 7 goals in 21 games for Tampa Bay Rowdies.
When does US season finish?
