Things have changed a lot over the years, but one thing has remained constant and that is our love of the Mariners. People come and go, some like to post a lot and others just like to read. It's up to you how you participate in the community!

FFA Olyroo news from Qatar
Goalkeeper Paul Izzo was released from camp due to ongoing management of a knee injury and has been replaced by Adelaide United custodian John Hall.

Not good from the shop window point of view.

So the essence of moneyball is getting players of a certain standard for less than you'd otherwise have to pay. That'd usually mean that they're unfavoured for one reason or another; you've got to take gambles that other clubs are unwilling to take.

Inevitably, some won't come off (e.g. Heffernan).

But some will. McGing is a good example - comes from NSW second division but the coaches see something in him and pick him up. Mitch Austin is another. Roy O'Donovan is another (despite his recent brain snap, his goalscoring record is quite decent, even if it's overshadowed by our poor form and his recent indiscretion).

Some of these players are those that other clubs wouldn't touch, so we pick them up and get better results from those individuals than you'd get for the same dollars with other clubs' recruitment strategies.

And if you get it wrong, the cost of the mistake is much less than f**king up on a Marcel Seip or a Kim Seung-Yong.

Where the wheels fall off is if you're simply not stumping up enough cash to compete or if you have some of your squad not buying in.

But if you get a team that goes all Mighty Ducks, basically accepts that they're everybody's favourite loveable misfits and proceeds to go out and kick arse regardless then you're onto a f**king winner. There needs to be enough talent there to compete, and there also needs to be [extremely Disney voice] a team with bigger hearts than the rest [/extremely Disney voice].

Yep
He's still young
Cheap
Eager to impress

If doesn't workout nothing lost but is that what the squad needs? We need some experience.

Have to much potential already. Need someone guide them. If we can get that as well why not

Austin prob a good example.

Think I saw something recently with him saying UK didn't suit me.

Be plenty who would be scared to come home thinking they have failed or think they invested so much can't quit now or keep getting told they will make it soon.

We need to get Bradden Inman on the phone. His contract at Crewe Alexandra finishes at the end of this season (Crewe is also looking like getting relegated to League 2) and was previously at Tottenham. He's been pretty much forgotten by most Aussie fans and scouts I'd say.

TW said in the press conference said we were looking at adding experience - and separately talked about a young striker tbc as Fletcher. It didn't sound like an either/or.

I watched the guys train this morning. Early 30s - they only trained for 50 odd minutes before heading to the pool. There can't be a more humid spot on the coast. Bingers was drenched.

The players were divided into groups doing drills which looked to be based on positions. e.g. fullbacks together, CBs together, keepers attackers together, etc, including some of the NYL team. Just one observation - couldn't see everyone - just the guys closest to me - but if that is a divided group they do a good job hiding it.

So... Smeltz appears to be out of form/favour at Sydney, but we know he's a class player. Caceres wants out, and Sydney is apparently interested. Can we not join the dots?

The divisive group is down to 2 members now. Very much the minority

Potentially controversial questions -

How many of Moss's problems stemmed from the same group?

How many of Moss's problems persisted because he had either lacked the backing or the backbone to take it on?

Hopefully we can sell Caceres and get some coin, and then offer Smeltz a deal. :)

I've wondered that too, and suspect to some degree you are quite right.
But then I also saw Moss's tactical and strategic decision making (even his choice and timing of subs) and was constantly scratching my head in confusion. He has to take at least a decent portion of the blame.

4 if you include Eddy + Reddy.

Just a thought - there were a bunch of former Liverpool players in town earlier this month.

Wonder if any HAL club (let alone us) is interested in bringing one down here for a little longer?
