Given the player has been playing football professionally here for several years maybe the club presumed (I would think quite rightly) he/his agent would have their ducks in a row?

It is not a case of wanting to slam the club, but rather not blindly ignoring that SOME (i have never said they are solely or totally culpable) culpability should be placed on the club given the below clause.

National Registration Regulations
5.2 Visa Player

(a) If a Club wants to register a Visa Player as a Professional, that Club must ensure it meets all the legal requirements pertaining to the obtaining and maintaining of a valid visa or work permit for that Visa Player, including, where applicable, a letter of endorsement from FFA, the payment of any minimum salary and any sponsorship requirements.

If as rbakersmith alludes he had a no further stay condition, it should have come up earlier considering the length of time it has been on the radar.

Given in most countries in the world you need work visa and he has already played for WSW & PG my guess is you assume the player or his agent would understand this and get it in order... NAY have this in order ...

Its not like we have been talking for six months ... its been a few weeks...

In the time frame of say the 3 to 4 weeks this has been discussed prior to finding out about the issue ... how much sooner should the club have found out ...

Thanks for supporting the crux of my argument, the club shouldnt make assumptions and thus are partly to blame. (p.s apples and oranges as those did not require him to travel to Australia first for a trial/medical, and then subsequently obtain a work visa once signed)

Call me cautious, but if im a professional sports club and the relevant player registration regulations place the responsibility on the club to "...ensure it meets all the legal requirements pertaining to the obtaining and maintaining of a valid visa or work permit for that Visa Player", i would be providing assistance and performing checks to ensure the player i wish to sign has the appropriate entry visa for the trial/medical which would not prohibit them obtaining a work visa should you choose to sign the player after the trial/medical period.

...hence the checklist I was suggesting that the club has probably now pulled together for next time this is on the radar.

By all means, the primary responsibility rests with the player, but the club does have a defined level of responsibility as well.

Learn from it, move on.

For Hersi to have obtained a sports visa he would have needed to obtain a letter of nomination from a sponsor, ie the club. If the club hadnt provided that sponsorship, then it should be quite obvious that he didnt have a valid visa. Culpability for this lies with both parties.
Why would the club sponsor his visa if they weren't sure they would even sign him if he didn't pass the fitness test??

Full blame on Hersi or his manager

I think this one's run as far as it's gonna run. Wanna draw a line under it now?

Onto more fun things, Bray's keen to extend his stay (http://www.fourfourtwo.com/au/news/bray-wants-extended-mariners-stay#:T-xOcl7DRLiRmA), and we've got quite a few with deals expiring this year who we'd have to be thinking hard about:

Bray
Garcia
Uskok
Buhagiar
Bingham
Stella
Heffernan

Sadly it's clear where Heffernan's prospects are at, but for the others it's a really interesting puzzle.

Who would you keep?

Apart from Heff i would keep them all. Uskok had one game where he looked pretty composed and he will benefit form a full pre-season. Stella will get alot better and his attitude is good. I think we have had enough departures for now and need a season or 2 of continuity. We need to add a couple more players of quality (Hersi maybe?) and keep Luis if possible. Other than that i'm happy with the squad we have.

Bray - Keep

Garcia - Obviously would love to keep him but I don't see it happening. Can he cope with the big break, a full pre season and another 27 game season? I don't think so.

Uskok - Again, would like to keep him but Tony's want for an experienced CB and wish cash available next season leaves me worried for him as we are well covered at CB. Only option is to maybe keep him as DM cover where he can also play. Maybe a good fit for when Monty retires?

Buhagiar - keep

Bingham - keep

Stella - don't rate him and never have tbh. Tony wants an attacking midfielder and again if we release him and have more cash available I'd like to see someone more experienced come in.

Heffernan - We all know what's happening there so again, frees up some more cash.

Garcia - Yes please
Uskok - Keep plus we need another CB
Buhagiar - Keep

Heffernan - I wish him luck - maybe he can play in out NPL team and get some more fitness.

Uskok - Gone, Need experienced CB
Buhagiar - Youth contract, to young for now, needs more development

Bray - Definitely keep.
Garcia - keep.
Uskok - Need experienced CB.
Buhagiar - YOOF
Bingham - Keep
Stella - Keep, Not starting 11 but good squad filler.
Heffernan - I feel for him but I have to trust TW on this one. Maybe keep him to captain the Youth team and get him to take the lobotomy so he doesn't use visa spot.

The thing I like is that there's nobody on the list that I'd go "ewwww, they're stinking up the list, get them out of here..."

*But*, any person you sign needs to be better than an equivalent person might be - you've got to beat the opportunity cost. That's where signing 'nice blokes' doesn't always cut it, and some hard headed selections have to be made.

If Heff weren't a visa player he'd be a lot easier to keep, and there's absolutely a time and a place for squaddies - inevitably in a salary-capped league with 23 squad spots to fill, there are going to be squaddie/utility/filler players who aren't necessarily first XI players.

The smart way to manage those spots (in my impeccably humble opinion) is through signing kids with potential. That way the kids are training with the first team and pressing them all year.

You look at the 'problem' we have this week, where Monty and Ascroft are coming back but it's hard to bench any of the starters from last week, even though they wouldn't have been starters at season's beginning.

That's exactly the sort of 'problem' we need to keep having. If everyone up to and including the club captain is under pressure to perform, then we'll perform well as a team.

Your right, with the only however being that kids need years to become self sufficient, as well as being capable of lasting 90 minutes, but they are very much needed for the system to keep rolling along.
As with someone like Uskok a leading player in a lower league will only need half a season in and around the club to either come up to speed or be cut.

So Wilkinson has signed with City. But interestingly has only signed on for the rest of the season. I'd say Walmsley's hands were tied with releasing so many on contract players that he couldn't sign Wilko until the end of the season. He has been talking lately he is on the lookout for a good no.10 and a experienced CB.

Looking positive.

Luis Garcia's impact has changed Central Coast Mariners' position on marquees, says Tony Walmsley

He has only played 75 minutes of A-League football but the remarkable contribution of Luis Garcia to the Central Coast Mariners has led the club to realise the value of marquee players, according to coach Tony Walmsley.
The Mariners have repeatedly eschewed big-money signings, firstly from instruction by Graham Arnold - who made it a policy to focus on Australian players - and then under Phil Moss.
But Garcia's undeniable impact, both at the gate - a season-high crowd of more than 13,000 saw his debut against Western Sydney Wanderers - and on the field has alerted the Mariners to what an established name can do.

"The reality is that at 37, Luis is only a short-term proposition for our club but what we've learned is that this model works," said Walmsley. "This has shown us that if you bring an outstanding player with outstanding character, with a high profile, big things will happen on and off the pitch. A real light has gone on for us about the potential opportunities.
"The owner [Mike Charlesworth] was using this process with Luis to see how a marquee could work for the Mariners. There's no doubt he now has an appetite for a quality marquee next season and beyond. He's probably ruing we didn't do it sooner."
Garcia will again be restricted to a bench role against Brisbane Roar at Suncorp Stadium on Saturday but Walmsley expects he will be in contention to start against Adelaide at home the week after.
Despite the limited game time, the coach says the ex-Liverpool, Barcelona and Atletico Madrid star has had a marked impact on his teammates.
"Nobody wants to let their guard down around him. He's driving high standards just by doing what he does, which is training hard and being extremely disciplined," Walmsley said. "There's no ego with Luis, yet he also has this incredible leadership quality that makes players want to learn from him. They're hanging on every word he says.
"He's giving our boys a window in what it takes to be a champion and they're thriving on being exposed to the very best. He's also not afraid to pull players aside for feedback - things like the angle or timing or a run - which is what you want your senior players to do."
After being pilloried for their performances early in the season, the Mariners have been far more competitive of late, beating Wellington Phoenix twice and drawing with Melbourne Victory in an improved past month.
"That first Wellington game, where I made some team selections that set about challenging certain players, marked a big change in our approach and we've carried it on since that night," the coach said. "The Adelaide game aside, where we didn't play very well due to fatigue, we've been much better in this period. Internally, we can feel the progress and it's pleasing that's showing externally.
"Probably the Wanderers' game, which we lost 2-1, showed us what we can do. They controlled the first half but we were much better than them in the second half and should have gone on to win. The players showed a new maturity - they solved the problems on the pitch without the bench needing to intervene."
Tough calls have had to be made on several players, and while Walmsley has never criticised an individual publicly, he has had to part ways with Eddy Bosnar, Matt Sim, Anthony Caceres, Nick Fitzgerald and Liam Reddy. A slew of young and relatively untested players have been signed in their place.
"We've had such a large turnover in players since the start of the season, something that was unexpected, but the group we now have has signed up to what we've set out to do and they want to be a part of it," Walmsley said. "There was obviously some alignment issues with a number of players, and we're still finalising that process. It's forced my hand, to be honest, in being pro-active in the transfer market."
Highly-regarded youngster Anthony Kalik has also just joined Croatian giants Hajduk Split on loan but Walmsley has no qualms about the move.
"Hajduk are a big club and he'll get a lot of time in their second team and maybe even their first team," he said. "If they like what they see, they'll make us an offer but otherwise he'll be coming back to us as a much-improved player."
The Mariners have been without striker Roy O'Donovan for the past month after his eight-match suspension for headbutting Wellington's Manny Muscat on New Year's Eve and Walmsley says it has been a difficult spell for the Irishman.
"He's doing it tough, but he's four games through and there's light at the end of the tunnel," he said. "All season he's been crying out for the kind of balls Luis Garcia has been providing in the past fortnight. He can't wait to get back out there and on to the end of that service."

One thing that really stands out for me is how much Roy would have loved getting the sort of service through the middle that Luis is able to provide. We really weren't doing much at all through the middle. Hopefully Roy comes back and can show us what he can do if provided the service he needs. Would be great to finish the season on a high and if Luis doesn't extend then we desperately need a proven # 10 for next season.
