Assuming JC stays I wouldn't mind picking up Dean Bouzanis. Unemployed at the moment. Good shot stopper with reasonable distribution (including a side punt courtesy of Pepe Reina) although he can be a bit flappy with crosses. His lack of a club might also have given him a better attitude

Yeah, I know - talking is quite different though, means we should still have a chance... As long as he ends up back with us... I'm hoping it's just their fans starting the rumours, frantically looking for hope somewhere ;)

"Chief executive Tony Pignata confirmed Mariners young gun Bernie Ibini, who is on loan from China's Shanghai East Asia, had been approached as a target".

It's not the fans it's the board & Arnie - Say him on news last night - When queried about taking players from CCM he said "It's football it's Business" although he did say I want the best - Back handed slap - I'm coming for your players with cash because they are the best

Ibini's future is in the hands of the guys we released mcbreen too and moss is quoted as being in negotiations with. I'd guess he will be either loaned again to us or sydney will pay a transfer for him. As far as I can tell Weemac hasn't played since Arnold left, making the bench a couple of times.
Hopefully letting McBreen go can be repaid with Ibini but they may say that already happened this year.
They will be into year 2 of 3 yr deal & got bugger all out of him. Cash will speak this time IMO

Yeah, I saw the 442 article.... Starting to think it might be time to change the name of the Arnie thread to "F-U Backstabbing B******" or something along those lines :( He might want the best, he shoul go find a new set of the best, rather than just trying to recreate the earlier Mariners team.

In one sense I feel for Pasfield getting the flick. The problem was he did not seem to be putting any pressure on Reddy. Hopefully whoever comes in fights tooth and nail with Reddy for the GK spot. Griffiths needs to be moved on, Morton needs to be cut, likewise with Simon. Seip should start looking for another club or the Mariners should find him one. An absolute waste of a visa spot and according to rumor the highest paid player on our roster. Slater is a waste of a spot and Kwassie needs to retire.

Why does Morton need to be cut? Exciting young prospect and was just unlucky with injuries last year. Slater is still very young and one for the future, I'm sure he will figure in the next year or two. I would keep Matty but he really needs to have a great pre season and come out firing next year. Kwassie? I think it will all depend if he has recovered 100%. If he has and isn't on a lot of coin I would, love him to have one more season. There is no one else quite like him! :) Seip? Well if we can get a buyer then I agree he is a waste of a visa spot.

I'm in two minds about Griffiths, but my gut feel is that he should be moved on yes... Pasfield, I actually think deserves a first spot somewhere but Reddy has been doing better. I was wondering whether he might go to Perff while Vukovic is away. In a sense we've been a bit harsh on him, look at Theo and Hugene - both of them have been touted as some of the best GKs in the league - both of them can be trusted to make a headless run out of their box, leaving the goal entirely unprotected, at least once per game, often costing a goal. Pasfield had one major problem in most games...
Anywho, I've already stated that I believe that it would be a HUGE mistake to get rid of Matty, I firmly believe that he'll improve with a full regular season, unencumbered by having been hurt and settling into the club again and so, I think he could show himself to be a pain for other teams next year. At the end of the day, people like him, Macca and Berisha (just to bring in at least one from outside the team), their role is to be a nuisance - they don't have to be particularly technically gifted and they generally aren't - they just need to fill their role and I think Matty does that OK now, could be good soon.
Morton - for some reason, the games that he's played have been the ones that I've missed, but the feedback here has been very positive every time, so I don't understand why you'd want to get rid of him.
Getting rid of Seip would also be silly I think, considering the pain that it would probably be, to kill of the contract etc... He's been improving significantly over the last half-a-year, to a point where I actually prefer him starting over Griff2, and he's reasonably handy in the full-back position too. Yes, arguably he's a waste of a visa spot, but he's here now, so we might as well work with it.
Slater? I have no idea
Kwas - it's a bit of a tough call for mine, so I'm with localpom.

See, those things fight against each other.

We want the team on the coast, but the reason why MC wants to expand to North Sydney is to increase the fanbase, and thus increase the saturation area for sponsorship, which then, he reckons, will increase both our attendance (doubtful) and our appeal to big sponsors (possible...)

I am not a marketing dude, but surely bums-on-seats is not the main issue here??

Wouldn't it be eyeballs on TV?

With SBS and Foxtel viewership up and 7 trips to the Finals, 4 GFs and 4 (possibly 5) ACL appearances in 9 seasons, we already have a story to sell to sponsors.

Our TV numbers don't meet those of most other teams, I think it was midfielder or one of the other regulars was keeping tabs on it, there is a thread in the Australian Football section. Our brand isn't the same premium as the Sydney teams, Victory or Brisbane, and it's a cold hard fact. That saying, Heart DO have Westpac and Perth has QBE so there has gotta be some potential for us.

Simon to be cut:naughty: cut the whole team why don't ya;)

Get it through your thick head sydmariner, Simon had a shite season and seems to be a shadow of the player he once was. Hopefully nebakke is right and that he will come good after a full season and preseason under his belt after his injury, but I am doubtful.

you know I've been thinking and I've done a full back flip in my thinking on Kwas if he can get fit.

for the past few years oppositions have been used to us with a Simon/Macca/Duke style striker.
Kwassie has typically been an off the shoulder, tricky, opportunistic, almost sneaky striker who, with the guile and skill of players like Kim, Trif, McGlinchey (hopefully), Fitz and the like, could really fire.

in the past we've either had Kwas and next to no playmakers to set up lent of wily chances, or we've created buckets of wily chances but had mainly direct strikers with the gumption but not the wiles to capitalise.

fit and in tune with our playmakers I think Kwassie might just hit his heights

he wasn't the clubs top goal scorer before his injury for no reason, the potential's there with the right service

I was one of the first to say it's time to let him go originally, but he provides something different which can be useful
