Mariners Squad - 2020-2021

I'll get roasted for this but Ziggy is a great guy and a decent player. Not an exceptional player. From a squad perspective his loss if ably replaced isn't that big a deal. Losing the great guy bit might impact culture.

I just don't see any of this as all that probable. Even if money is the reason it's a ploy fraught with risk for marginal gains

Totally agree. Everyone is replaceable but doing so at short notice, two weeks before the season kicks off, without another senior defender in the team, with our low spending power & reputation, in the middle of a pandemic heavily affecting international travel and at a club who hasn’t had the strongest recruitment in recent years - that’s a whole lot of risk.

A whole lot of risk, absolutely. Which is why I think it doesn't stack up. It'd have to be a hell of a gain to be worth it and I don't see that scenario at our feet

Yep.....there's no way we'd end up better off from any swap deal along these lines.
Ziggy also brings plenty of value off the pitch - and our club is in such dire straits that we can't afford to downplay the importance of that right now.

It sounds like bullshit, but I'd love to know which dickhead made it up.

Though if Gatt is changing his story on us and wages, that implies somebody has been feeding him information tonight.

It's the changing of his story that kind of gives it more credence....like somebody has gotten in touch with him and said 'no, this is what the story is up to'.

The whole thing is weird. Even if it's somebody making shit up, it's still weird.

What exactly does Gatty mean when he says apparently we CAN afford the wages but have chosen to look elsewhere.... Does he mean it's good because the deal is off... But we still have money

Maybe it’s Musty? I dunno, I love having Zig at the club, will be very sorry to see him go, especially if it’s like this. Shambles.

Buried in the comments was another bit from Daily Oz Football:
They have already asked an Aussie defender if he would return but that player already has offers from overseas pending.

By all accounts we aren't after a swap deal.
Ziggy will be released and we are reportedly looking elsewhere?
Ray Gatt is usually on the money

ziggy is a perfectly capable NATURAL CB.
nigro arrived on trial when Ziggy was renewed and was always going to get a contract so that tells this whole pre season Ziggy hasn’t been considered a RB.

our defensive players are as follows.
RB: Nigro, Miller (happy with that)
CB: Zig, Kye, Ruon, Hall
LB: Clisby, Hatch (pray to god hatch develops)

A swap deal should not even be on the table. If it’s for an equal or better CB we still need another CB. If we downgrade it’s a waste of time and the hole is even more gaping. And I would HEAVILY question Staj’s recruitment policy and even more so ABILITY.
This.
I was absolutely shocked when I heard this news, but now that I have had time to think, I am not so worried.
Disappointed, yes. But mainly at the loss of a player who appears to bleed for the Club and fits the Club's profile so well and is an old head in a young team.
As to the loss of talent, I am not so concerned.
It appears not to be a swap which is a great relief.
If we trade up for a quality experienced CB, I will be more than happy.

To me there are three possible reasons behind this;
1. The club doesn’t want him (not likely)
2. The club can’t afford his wages
3. Ziggy wants out because he is disillusioned by the club

Any one or more of these scenarios shows the club has more problems then we think.
Pretty good reasoning Mick. It could be a a combination of 2 and 3. It took a long time for Ziggy to and the Club to come to an agreement and sign a contract.
It could be that the compromise was that the contract was more than the Club wanted to pay for a player of Ziggy's standard but less than Ziggy thought he was worth, but at the time both parties were running out of options. Maybe the Club was paying overs to get him originally.
It could be to both parties benefit if a better offer has come to Ziggy and an experienced quality CB is available to the Club.

If it is Sainsbury or equivalent I will be more than happy, and although we are pretty good for DMs at the moment, and I doubt that it will happen, I would love to see Musti back at the Club.

If the reason is we can’t afford to pay Ziggy or don’t think he’s worth the money (which he most certainly is in my view on and off the pitch) then what fool allowed a contract to be signed a few weeks ago?? Honestly, how does this stuff happen....
